I'd like to Introduce myself as Doug, And a hearty Hello to all of penny arcade forums. I've been a long time fan of Penny Arcade. I've made a point of getting pretty much everyone I know to read. But This is not what I've come to ask your help for.
As Many Gamers are aware Electronic Arts and many other Game publishers have employed $40-60 'rentals' of their retail releases of PC games punishing those of us whom purchase digital media. For most industries the act of punishing the paying customer would lead to the end of the company. However the the game industry has dodged this bullet
Even after the Spore protests and Bioshock protests. Securerom their central disc recognition software alters your OS to reject legitimate disc emulation software that you may use to play backed up copies of the games you buy. It has multiple problems with conflicts and poor coding to conflict with resident software, drivers and is generally ineffective as Every game they have released has several user created fixes to remove this layer of protection. In some cases their own tech support suggest to remove the protection to make their software stable. The real question we should all ask ourselves is how this effects us and what is appropriate action.
I find this offensive and damaging to my favored form of recreation, PC Gaming. Blaming piracy on PC gamers alone isn't fair, and in recent years the effort of these DRM systems has only incited more piracy. However acts such as slamming spore on Amazon with a score of one only justifies the suits decisions against us. We need a positive format of protest that benefits our common man and is an undeniable monetary protest that can be monitored by these companies.
I present The '$50 EA isn't making' charity. Every time a game released by Electronic arts is released with these draconian protection systems, don't but it! In addition take that money and donate it. This money will be tracked on a website that will display the current years and the Entire charity profits. The money will be annually donated to Child's play as it is the gamers charity. This will demonstrate that we as customers are not willing to accept this abuse, and are also willing to prove that we are willing to back up our claims with our money. I however lack the resources or knowledge to launch this idea, and this is where I suppose I need help. Launch the idea yourself, help me get it going or lets get a group effort going. Feedback, suggestions or comments are welcome.
Edit: I'm aware this isn't the best grammar. This was just a quick post to gauge the reactions of others.
'Rental' refers to the Three install limits on most games being released for the PC. Once you install the game three times you cannot play. This is not stated on the box clearly (or at all)
