Glad to see Eternal Darkness mentioned. Man that one fucked me up. I LOVED the Lovecraftian feel it had getting toward the end.
And I can't play through a Fatal Frame game. Any of them. I absolutely can not handle them.
Lovecraft was a huge influence on the whole thing. It even took place in Providence, Rhode Island and featured gods from the outer reaches of space. So good.
I have to get around to doing my other two playthroughs sometime. Maybe when there are less awesome games to play (probably never, but hey, one can dream).
Well yeah, but when you get to that amazing city underground towards the end, what with all the odd architecture and stuff, it all just clicked. I loved just standing there looking at it.
So I am trying to play Silent Hill 1 on my PS3 and this fucking happens
"Silent Hill
Publisher: Konami Digital Ent.Product No: SLUS-00707
Description: Throughout gameplay, when the user’s character shoots an enemy, a medium pitched tone plays."
It is alot more annoying then it sounds. Sony better get on that shit.

Well that sucks to hear. I was thinking about breaking out it again and playing it for a friend who's too scared to play but wants to watch. Guess I'll need to dust off the PS2 and hook it back up if I want to do that.
I just beat Condemned 2 tonight. Awesome story mode and great multiplayer. Very creepy, atmospheric game.
Condemned 2 was awesome, I absolutely loved it. I felt they did cock up some of the story (they explain right at the start that the weird things going on are sound-waves messing people up. I'd much rather they left it as ambiguous and possibly just in your head), but some other bits were great
the explanation for the 'tar' levels where everything's covered in black goo and stuff. Thought they were strange, but the reason for them I thought was awesome. And they scared the hell out of me. Like coming out of the MRI in the abandoned station..
After the first level in Eternal Darkness it pulls a mind trick on you with a 'Thanks for playing the demo, full game coming this fall' trick and that is one of perhaps two or three times where I have jumped in genuine shock at a game.
Eternal Darkness was exceptional in every single aspect, frightening, atmospheric, flawlessly voiced and with genuine shocks and twists. A perfect blend of Lovecraft and action I cant stress enough how great it is.
I just couldn't get into Eternal Darkness. I tried, but in my opinion, immersion is one of the most important qualities for a good horror game and the gimmicky freak out moments (like, sorry, your memory card is reformatted) ruined the game for me. That and the gameplay felt clunky even for a horror game.
If you want a good Lovecraftian horror game, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth for the PC/oXBox comes recommended. The level of quality varies drastically from area to area (the FPS-esque sections are generally mediocre), but when the game is good, it's phenomenal.

Actually, its pretty easy to never see the insanity effects in the game, sometimes I would let my sanity go down just to see cool stuff. I agree that the stuff that broke the fourth wall was pretty gimmicky, the subtle effects of losing sanity were pretty neat. The mansion for instance had this bust that would turn its head to look at you, it was absolutely creepy.
While I respect your opinion, in my opinion, Eternal Darkness is by far one of the best lovecraft games ever, Call of the Cthulhu doesn't come close, Eternal Darkness manages to be truer to Lovecraft despite not having the official license.
Dark Seed was pretty damned scary when I was a kid. It was very unnerving. Most people are too young to have played it, though. I was 15 when it came out. >_>
i always wanted this game so damn bad. i was huuuuuge into HR Giger back then (still a pretty big fan) and every time i would see the box it just looked so awesome. never did actually get around to playing it though.
Alien Carnage, starring the hero "Halloween Harry", is an impressive game with no detail overlooked. Professional musical soundtrack, brilliant full-VGA graphics, non-stop animation and huge start-game and end-game cinematics.
If Duke Nukem has a twin separated at birth, it's got to be the character of Halloween Harry! Harry has an armory of weapons he can find and use, besides the devastating flame thrower that he starts the game with. And Harry's jet pack takes him to spots on a level that normal heroes could not reach.
Earth is on the verge of a takeover by aliens intent on turning humans into mindless slave zombies, who can be used in their conquest of the universe. Harry's called into action to Space Station Liberty, and given orders to penetrate the alien ship which has burrowed itself under a high-rise city.
In addition to the flame thrower, Harry can use weapons dispensers he finds during the game, giving him weapons like the photon cannon, guided missiles, grenades, shields, micro nukes, and the very powerful Omega bomb. It's an arsenal that will have the aliens shaking' in their slimy shoes.
If you like high-octane action with a mix of clever and humorous characters, you'll LOVE this game.
A FEW OF THE AWESOME GAME FEATURES
* One of the best 256-color VGA "platform" game ever seen on the IBM PC.
* Ear-popping DIGITIZED Sound Blaster music and digital sound effects.
* Over a dozen cinematic sequences.
* Huge "boss" aliens in each of the four missions.
* Absorbing integrated (and funny) story, which proceeds each mission.
* Incredible VGA graphics and animation.
* Built-in radar mode to help Harry locate hostages on each level.
* Many secrets and bonuses to discover--lots of replay value.
* Save/restore, joystick support, cheat mode, three skill levels, and more.

They could've left it more vague, maybe put off the emitter bonus objectives for a couple levels. But the story itself is great. Love the ending, and hoping a third game isn't too far off.
Have you played any FPS Mode yet? It's a great way to replay the game and get revenge on all the shit that scared you the first time. 8-)
If anyone reading this hasn't at least played the demo, you owe it to yourself to download it and play it. Now-ish.

From wikipedia:
"Fatal Frame, known as Project Zero in Europe and Australia as Zero (零, Zero?, this is a pun; this kanji is normally read rei, which can also mean "ghost")[1] in Japan, is a survival horror video game series, so far consisting of four games and a spin-off."
So I guess the name derives from the Japanese title?
More importantly when is Fatal Frame 4 coming to the wii in the US?

Dark Seed was awesome but suffered from annoying game mechanics that involved having to be at certain places at certain times to complete it!
Has nobody brought up Zombies Ate My Neighbors? I think that is the best Halloween game bar none. It's got everything a creepy game needs, awesome co-op, memorable music, and a twisted sense of humor.

I loved the game, period, actually.
Dark Seed 2, however, had potential but I hated for various reasons.

I still hold that the Resident Evil REmake was one of the scariest games ever. Atmosphere in games is what scares me, and REmake had nothing BUT terrifying atmosphere. Creepy old dilapidated mansion? Weird chains hanging from the ceiling? Ominous tapping noises and flickering lights?
I am shocked that no one has mentioned the Clocktower games. Am I the only one who liked clocktower?
Hell no, the first one was excellent. I have never since played a game like it. The first level alone is scary as hell.
You get stuck in a dorm with I think about 4 floors on it with, The Scissor Man. So, I would be walking down the hall to try to find a way out of the dorm, then all of a sudden I can hear the "danger music" start to kick in very softly. Then I hear the, SCHING, SCHING, SCHING of the Scissor Man, opening and closing his giant damn sheers as he is chasing me!
Then to run into a room and try to find a hiding place, only to hace the Scissor Man follow you in and search the room for you. Then you tense up and wait. Does he find you, and kill you? Or did you pick a good hiding place, and he leaves?
If we're going to talk about individual levels in otherwise non-horror games, might as well throw in That Level in Thief: The Dark Project. You know the one.

Some guy is doing a remake. This is a game that there really demands a modern sequel, I am suprised it hasn't been resurrected on the virtual console or live arcade.

To be fair, Bloodlines is Horror/Action/RPG.
The little bit about the snuff film in the game was really good too.
The original Condemned's abandoned shopping mall is one of my most memorable scenes. The whole game was awesome but that stood out particularly. Also, the encounter in Condemned 2 with the
It's a shame I already knew about the bear when I was playing Condemned 2 It was still tense, but the initial shock was lost.
What did make me jump, and I mention it every time, was in the damned hotel earlier on in the game

Who can forget this lovecraft inspired title

Eternal Darkness was definitely one of my favorite gamecube games. I should grab it from my bro and bust it out on the WII.
Did the 64 version of ED ever leak out to the public?
Then my generic gamecube storage card decided to eat itself next time I booted up the game
Made me proper shit myself.

Yes, the Haunted Hotel was fuck all awesome.
The fact that there was nothing to shoot or kill added so much to it.
