Alpha available hereRequires Orange box (HL1,Ep1 and Ep2) (you need to sign upto moddb.com to download it)
The alpha's only been out a couple of days, full release is suppose to be in November. I haven't had a chance to play it (as I don't have the Orange Box) but I've been told it's heavily influenced by Eternal Darkness.
The main attraction to this game is the mental instability of the character you control; this means his perception of reality and his mind is often hazy, allowing interesting environments and characters.
The game is about an infection that has overrun your location. The inhabitants have become mindless beings; they are riddled with the virus that eliminates all social interaction skills, and they generally prey on any uninfected life forms. Whilst long term carriers of the disease are visually decrepit, the amount of time an individual is infected determines how much of their body is physically ruined.
You as the player fights the battle not only with the virus and it's victims but also with your mind. It constantly plays tricks on you, warping the scenery/atmosphere and voiding any comfort zone you thought you once had.

First release of psychological HL2 mod, 'Mentality'. Please note that this is not polished by any stretch, nor optimised heavily, but we wanted to give you all a chance to play this short demo. Please read 'Readme.txt' in RAR archive for help. Please also note that to play this you will need the contents of Orangebox installed, that is HL2, Episode 1 and Episode 2. Be sure to tell us what bugs are encountered, we know there are plenty. We hope you have fun playing
moddb won't let me make an account. Seems like their registration page isn't working right?
yeah this
Yea you guys are right, I took a quick look around but couldn't find it for download anywhere else either
The register page seems to be working till you get to the making the account part, cause if you screw up your details it works like normal. Hopefully it gets fixed soon
One game I still come back to from time to time is Clive Barker's Undying. That could be quite an experience at times. The howlers always knew when to scare the crap out of me.
Fear seemed more actiony to me. Both by the same company by the way. But Monolith also did one of the greatest horror fps ever
BLOOD
3 things i remember from blood:
1. flare lights people on fire.
2. you can kick heads like a ball
3. "Strangers in the night......"
Blood, that game was fun. I don't really remember playing the single player, but my friends and i had a blast with multi.
Blood 2 was underappreciated. Caleb is so incredibly badass
'The bad man is here...
Actually I thought Blood 2 was incredibly disappointing. I played it not too long ago and the game has not held up well. The build engine in the first one actually looks better now, the lithtech engine couldn't handle any geometry details at all.
Silent Hill 2 is much less scary when played with friends.
Really? I played it through in one marathon night with a friend of mine. It was pretty cool, one of us would be on laptop reading gamefaqs the other would navigate the game. We would switch off when things got too intense. I remember beating the final boss just as the sun was coming up. It was definitely creepy as all shit however.

Still creepy. Just not as much compared to when I (try to) play alone.
Does the demo represent the full game? I would not want to spend 10+ hours walking around a spooky warehouse thinking "I've been in this room, I swear. I must be going the wrong way--oh wait no there's another hobo that I have to bludgeon" and that seemed to be the core gameplay.
On the topic of scary games with friends: It really depends on who the friends are. I used to be terrible with scary stuff, and I had a friend who was the same way, so we'd play Silent Hill at sleepovers and there would be this feedback loop where one of us would start freaking out and that would freak the other out until we'd both be so amped up that we couldn't go on. Then we'd try to go to bed and the motherfucker would talk in his sleep and dear god that is a frightening thing to have happen.

That was my impression of the demo as well. I'd love to be told that the actual game is much better since a budget horror game for Halloween that I haven't played already would be nice.
I'd say it is much better, but the whole game is spent exploring dark, grimy places filled with hobos and mentalists, all waiting to jump into your face.
Most horror games are less scary when playing with people or in broad daylight.
Still, when Eternal Darkness came out, we played it at a friend's house, and there were two of us on the couch playing/watching (the two others not paying attention and doing something else), at like 1 PM, big sunny day outside, ambient life sounds around us, and still, that one part (you know the one) made the two of us on the couch jump up and scream in sheer terror. I think my heart stopped for a second.

I actually don't know what part you mean. Spoiler it away.

I played that game this summer, and nothing really jumps out at me. I would also like to remember / discover your terror.

This game's scary factor is based on the atmosphere and the fuckedupness of events and insanity effects, such as bugs crawling around your screen or being in a room upside down. As your sanity drops, new ambient sounds appear, like crying women, creepy laughing childs, and the screen tilts a little. The game uses these well to make you uncomfortable, not throw shock pictures or sound effects at you to scare you. Obviously, the fact that they aren't there makes the one or two shock moments in the game much more powerful.
When you explore the bathroom, if your sanity is low enough, you can "examine" the empty bathtub. Expecting a simple dialogue box like everywhere else in the game, instead, I'm presented a super loud scream of death with a very fast and brief zoom-in of your character's corpse in the bathtub, filled with blood. There was no reason for this to happen, it's not canon with anything. It's just your insanity setting in. It was incredible because they didn't overuse this stuff (once or twice during the whole game do they make you kinda jump with a rapid movement or sound).
It (Condemned 2) also has arena stuff where you can just beat the snot out of a bunch of hobos, if you so choose.
Who could resist?
Anyway, you can use the same arena to fight agents in face masks who look exactly like the Ask-A-Ninja guy. And dispatch them with bowling pins and foosball rods. Or splash them with liquor and light them on fire with your stun gun.
Or go online and get in a vicious melee.
The level design is improved a great deal and beating up the enemies never feels like busywork. So definitely get 2 first.

Well, Eternal Darkness has been covered already, good, good...
Now, how about some Sanitarium (PC)?
That game wasn't "hard" since you couldn't really die, and it wasn't shock-jump scary, but it was definitely creepy. The pumpkin patch level is just disturbing.
SHIT.YES
I still own this game... some of the areas are just ridiculously creepy.
Definately one of my most memorable PC purchases to this date.

I don't think a videogame ever scared me more than that. It's going to take a lot to beat this.
The YouTube really doesn't do it justice. I was also playing it in the midafternoon on a pretty nice day, and this scared the piss out of me. No joke, I turned the game off almost right afterward, because I had to get ready to go to work, and then I was so unsettled by it that I actually never came back to it.
Do you guys remember the "fun house" level from Max Payne 2? I don't know if has been mentioned already but it was literally like being in one of those cheesy Semi Truck haunted houses that sprout up this time of year. It was one of the coolest levels I have every played and pretty creepy to boot.
I would like to add the original Half-Life to the list. I'm sure it's dated now, but I can't think of a game I played with more "OH HOLY FUCK!" moments.
The original "Alone in the DarK" was also pretty tense at the time. The first time that lizard-like thing jumped through the window at me I totally lost it.
There was a multiplayer mod for Quake 2 called "Gloom". I'm not sure if any of you played it, but it was one of the most creepy multiplayer games I've ever played.

Man, that game had some great moments. I loved the atmosphere in that game sometimes. Like (spoilered just in case):
When you're first in the house and you have to go down this hallway and there's these windows on the right side of the screen. Then you see the drapes flutter about as you hear the howling come closer. When they finally appeared it was a total "OH SHIT!" moment.

Also some notes about the alpha
should I get FEAR or Condemned 1 for my PC

I want a fun action game with scares
I would say Condemned is the scarier of the two, FEAR has more kinetic action and gunfights.

I think it would be pretty bad ass if they made a good FPS squad based game, sort of like R6 but with aliens.
