BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan — An American computer game designer reached space Sunday, fulfilling a long-deferred childhood dream that began with the flight of his astronaut father.
The Soyuz TMA-13 spacecraft carrying Richard Garriott and two crewmates — and the digitized DNA sequences of some of the world's most famous minds — hurtled into a clear blue sky from the Baikonur facility on the Kazakh steppe.
Mr. Garriott, a 47-year-old multimillionaire from Austin, Texas, is the sixth paying space traveller and the first American to follow a parent into orbit.
It's been a while since good ol' LB made anything particularly exciting, but... I'll always love him for giving us Ultima, anyway. I hope he's enjoying space as much as he hoped he would.
Maybe he'll find a good game up there to release. :P
Fun fact: He brought Stephen Colbert's DNA information with him.
What?
How did he bring the DNA information of more than two persons into space?
I mean, are those dudes who had the two PB drives that are the size of a tower sponsoring this, or is this what would constitute scientific fraud at any university?
Also, GODDAMNIT GARRIOT, WE WANT MORE STEAMPUNK GAMES.
Besides, he already had a good idea for UO2, but UO2 was canceled. Twice.
He actually didn't even have anything to do with UO2. He left Origin before development started, and it showed. They had three sets of fiction being thrown up on the official site, and the Brittania part of the fiction basically had British fucking up the world even worse, then just getting the fuck out.
But yeah, LB got sick of being a part of what he called "EA's UO company" and left. Ultima 9 was the end of Ultima for him.

What do you mean by... DNA information?D:
He has a microchip that he is going to bolt to the ISS or something that has a bunch of information on it. Like the Voyager Golden Disc except shittier and without any meaning at all considering the ISS will eventually reenter the atmosphere in a few decades.
A publicity stunt that helped fund his trip up there. Well, that and the 80m he got for the Ultima license.
On the plus side, it can't be used like the Golden Disc to destroy us in the past.
?
I'm not sure but he may be refering to Transformers: Beast Wars, in which, in addition to earth's location, the golden disc contained a hidden message from Megatron to his successor explaining how to travel to earth's distant past to destroy Optimus Prime, thus enabling the decepticons to conquer Earth and Cybertron.

Good for him, guy created my one of my deepest, most torrid love affairs of all time. Ultima Online. Fucker deserves to go to space. Game used to be fantastic, ironically lost it's luster as he was edged out of the picture. Still waiting for an MMO that can compete... it'll never happen though. I have come to terms with this.

Richard Garriott is English, he's from Cambridge not Texas. I'm confused.

Hell, he's been raised in Texas, spent most of his life there and his dad's american. As far as I know he's only british due to being born on british soil before '83, I don't even think his mother's from there.

It's General British now!

nasa should refuse to let him land back to earth unless a good plan for UO2 is documented.
I play Blazblue, Soul Calibur 4, Street Fighter 4 and soon Tekken 6... yeah... so add me if you want to play any of those.
fuck that, Carmack is making his own space ship. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armadillo_Aerospace
Carmack is so awesome.
UO is out of Garriott's hands now, no?
I didn't know his father was an astronaut, that's pretty cool. Rock on, LB.
Hopefully in space he figures out something that's more fun than Tabula Rasa and then comes down and implements it, because damn.
I wonder why he wouldn't work on portal technology instead
I'd like Ultima X.

Comrade British actually.

Awesome.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
Sonic the Hedgehog?
USE ME!
Top that Blizzard.
He was also on Colbert talking about it. That was awesome.
