Free is prefered, but I'd get it on Steam. I'm at work right now. How much is the Steam version?
Ten bucks.
That's reasonable. How long of a game?
A single playthrough? Fifteen, 20 hours, maybe more. Depends on how much of the side-stories you want to investigate, how much time you spend trying to put the pieces together on your own, and if you take the Blow Shit Up route or the Sneak Around People route. (Depends if you count "time spent retrying if you die" vs whatever, YMMV, etc)
But also note the presence of the Deus Ex Law - although it's not so much of a Law as a Truth. We're not installing it and playing it again on a dare, or a bet, or a challenge. It's just because we love this game so fucking much, we'll take any excuse to run through it again.

When Paul sends you to send the transmission, the building is full of friendly UNATCO troops. After you send the transmission, Walton Simons contacts you and says he's ordering the troops to kill you, because he doesn't have the patience for the killswitch to work.
But if you silently take out all the troops while they're still friendly, without getting caught at it, Simons tries to contact them, can't, and gets mad

So I just bought this on Steam (After having lost the disk recently in a move) and I'm having trouble getting the HDTP to work. Does anybody know if it's compatible with the steam version?

Google says to add these lines to your DeusEx.ini file, where the other "Paths=" statements are:
That file I linked is on mediafire because I cannot remember where I got it from, so I just uploaded it myself. It doesn't do anything initially, you need to run it first and then you can change things like resolution, processor affinity (so you don't have to do it on each launch of the game) and HUD scaling.
It's a nice little tweak program and I'd recommend it for anyone playing the game with modern hardware.
I started playing again with the shifter mod and I'm just up to hell's kitchen; I really like this mod but I think I spoiled myself on my last playthrough... I used that glitch where you start picking a lock then go to your inventory, wait ten seconds, and then the lock is picked with only one pick used.
I'm sooooo cautious of my lockpick usage now

Haha, hit an interesting glitch. I'm in Hong Kong and before I head up to Maggie in the hotel, I do some snooping around. Finally got to see Jock's apartment, scare some birds, etc. I do pretty much everything in that area except actually go see Maggie.
When I do finally go up to see Maggie and her dumpy maid is giving me the tour (not an actual tour, but she keeps telling me about stupid crap in the apartment like I care), I noticed that the door to the "secret" facility attached to her apartment was already open. Not only that, but an MJ12 soldier heard me walking around, so comes out to take a look. Obviously, he gets quietly shot in the face. Then another guy walks out and is also rapidly face-shot. Then I catch up with the maid who is now yammering about Tibetan hand-made carpets and have a nice chat with Maggie. At this point I can't help but imagine what the maid would say to JC about the not-so-secret secret facility that somebody left open.
JC: Why is there a secret facility here?
Maid: No, no secret facility.
JC: I'm pretty sure that's a secret facility.
Maid: No, just painting. Hand-made in China. Very authentic.
JC: Ma'am, I know secret facilities. I worked at a secret facility. I can't go through a single mission without tripping over at least one secret facility. I may not be able to emote, but I know secret facilities. They are my thing.
Maid: (busy getting murdered like always for a pulling pistol on me)
MJ12 Soldiers 1-20: (also murdered)
Maggie: (stunned, then thrown out the window)
Cat: (murdered with Dragon's Tooth)
JC: See? I totally called that it was a secret facility.
I could honestly play Deus Ex every day and not get bored, it stil suprises me now.
Infact, on my last playthrough I spent around 5 hours in
the verslife labs, before you download the ROM encoding just screwing around with the gas barrels and cages. Id push the barrells around so I could shoot em all from one vent, let loose all the greasels, greys and the bum, hide in the vent and shoot the barrels.
Cue chaos, mostly everything dies, but Im still not suspected and theres no one to stop me from escaping!
Decided to give Manderley half a chance this time. Too bad I'm playing on Realistic. Almost as soon as he turns hostile, I see this odd rectangular object coming right at my face. My first thought is "what the hell is that?" My second thought was bisected by a knife.
See, a throwing knife looks like a rectangle when it's coming straight at you. Then it hits you in the brain and you die. Round two was less forgiving for Manderley.
Also, I have a question about Hermann's kill phrase. I thought you got it on your last rounds of UNATCO, but I only got Navarre's kill phrase (who is already exploded, so it's useless). I'm guessing I need to dig it up somewhere else along the way?
You need to tell Jaime to stay at UNATCO to get Gunther's code.
Dangit. Oh well, guess Gunther gets to die horribly instead of unexpectedly.
Gunther's killphrase is great. On the other hand, infinite aug upgrades is sweet.

Also, law of Deus Ex in full effect. Will be reinstalling when I get home, and what's this patch GigaGopher is talking about ( http://www.mediafire.com/?zzzmnz02mu5 )? I don't make a habit of installing random shit from file-share websites. If I can get it in 1080p on my HDTV I will be delighted.
It's just a collection of random fixes (god I hate those things, applying the individual fixes yourself is much better), from the readme.txt file:
-Multiprocessor fix. Applies the fix that lets DX only use one processor/core. Fixes fast/slow/jittery gameplay.
-Processor throttling disabling. Disables CPU throttling (in the same way it's done from the Windows control panel). Again, fixes fast/flow/jittery gameplay.
Note that doing this by software means doens't seem to work on all computers; if you want to be sure, disable throttling in the BIOS.
-Video options. Choose any resolution, including ones that might not be offered by the game.
-Field of view options. Allows the game to run in true widescreen.
-GUI scaling fix. Installs the OTP Gui Scaling Fix by NVShacker. This prevents GUI elements from becoming stretched/blocky when playing at high resolutions.
Multiprocessor fix you can do yourself with ACT, imagecfg or Task Manager.
Processor throttling is the energy saving feature of your cpu, just disable it in power options in the control panel on your computer.
Video options: install this enhanced OpenGL renderer and manually edit deusex.ini to change the options.
Field of view is in user.ini, just search for fov and change both values to whatever you want.
Also, don't play with a gamepad, unless you like pain.
I think playing with a gamepad could work nicely, provided you avoid picking up too much unneeded stuff to minimize inventory management.
Also I reinstalled this too, I just didn't start playing it yet (want to try to see if it is possible to finish the game without relying on quicksaves).
Thanks for the explanation, that's much better. Yeah, I'll probably just apply the fixes. Hell, I should just keep DX installed on a network share all the time. :P
I figured I'd keep a KB&mouse nearby for inventory management and non-buttoned augs (enable speed, enable regen, and disable all will probably be on the controller) to try it out.
I want to create a series of easter eggs and side missions for DX that cause other random cool shit to happen.

I must say, Area 51 was something of a let down. The relatively low population of soldiers and commandos there made it seem far less of a "storm the fortress" task than infiltrating VersaLife or the Ocean base did. Karkians, Greasles and Grays are just not very interesting enemies.
The ending I went with was Merging with Helios. I understand that it's the canon ending, but it's not really a very rewarding ending. Denton just kind of walks out of the chamber and...that's it.
Bob Page was pretty lame, but I guess that's sort of the point. Simons should have been the final villain, and not this white suited clown who only really shows up in the last third of the game.
Still, all in all, the gameplay and the depth of the world more than made up for any flaws that may have occured in the game.

I played this game a bit a while ago on Gametap. The way hacking and fighting were mixed together sort of felt wierd to me, enough that I put it down for other games. I hated constantly hacking through a door, going down another path and slaughtering my way through hordes of guards, and then finding the code to the door that I already blew an item on at the end.
Thinking about it, that's probably a far better way to make hacking balanced with combat. I'm way too used to RPGs where if something is locked, picking that lock is usually the only way to get through it.
You played it wrong, simple as that. :P The only problem is you can't half ass the hacking sections, you either take the laser + turret filled path or the human laden path. You can't really jump in and out too often. The only exception is when they specifically design the hacking + stealthy section to allow you to snipe all of the enemies as opposed to sneaking past them entirely.
When you have the transmission to make in new york, before you make it, make a large stack or tower of cardboard boxes outside and jump onto them when you need to make your dramatic escape.
Versalife is fun when you go to the upstairs office and pick people off. If there were a new engine remake, I would love to grab an MIB and toss them through the window, bisect them with the dragon tooth, and then kick their body halves away to take out some of the security on either side. I have yet to play a game with the level design of deus ex.
You also need to go onto steam and play dystopia and pretend it is deus Ex.

At this point I'd always send the transmission, then turn on my speed aug and just jump off the building and run past all the guards to the exit. I always thought that was a lot more epic than having to fight them.

Wow.... I just played through the entire game. Just... Wow...
I don't think any game has ever actually given me choice like this before.
I was surprised when I found that the game actually let me shoot Navarre when I wanted to, and things changed accordingly. I felt attached to the characters despite the voice acting. I was wondering who Daedalus was, and Icarus scared me. And I actually had a hard time picking what to do towards the end. (I chose to merge with Daedalus/Icarus. I ended up trusting myself more than the Illuminati, and I didn't feel like I could cause another dark age, even for the sake of individual freedoms.) I guess it says a lot that I talk about it like this, rather then that I got ending A because of mechanic B.
I'm not going to be able to play the sequel now, am I?

Depends on what you expect from it
If you expect a decent game with some downright terrible design decisions and an unoptimized engine with a story that isn't as good as the original's and gameplay that doesn't offer nearly as much choice or freedom or nonlinearity, then you might possibly enjoy it
I haven't played it because...well, for a number of reasons

Every time someone brings up Invisible War, I have to mention that I did, in fact, enjoy it. I also have to add that I played IW before the original, so I had no expectations. IW is actually not a bad game and it does have a measure of choice that most other games still don't give you. The problem is that now that you have already played Deus Ex, you probably won't enjoy IW too much as a sequel. Honestly, it is just lacking in a lot of ways.
To give you some examples of what was wrong, let's start with the skill system: in IW, there isn't one. You can mod weapons, but all the weapons use a universal ammo system which severely restricts your options. One type of enemy essentially requires you to carry a railgun or else you risk burning up tons of ammunition. Levels pretty much all take place inside small areas, unlike the original's relatively expansive areas. Most of the "choices" in how you tackle a level are basically just a single air vent to crawl through or a window to break instead of just going in guns blazing. In Deus Ex, a lot of different things can happen depending on who you save (or kill) and when. In IW, pretty much everything is scripted to happen a certain way and almost nothing affects the main story. And so on and so forth.
I can certainly understand why a lot of Deus Ex fans got zero enjoyment from IW. If I'd been expecting an even better Deus Ex and instead was handed a massively chopped-down and much more linear game, I would've felt burned pretty bad, too. If they'd been developed in the opposite order, it would be a whole different ball game.
