interactive fiction thread NOW WITH TLDR SECTION

i haven't done this in at least a year! woo!

INTERACTIVE FICTION

If you know what this is, please skip to the section entitled "I know that shit."

if you've read one of my threads on this before, skip to the section entitled "You're just repeating yourself."

TL;DR

Download this.

Shade

A one-room game set in your apartment.

This is my favourite IF. Play it.

What the hell is it?

text adventures! like an interactive story. they're so cool that i spend almost all my time at school writing papers about them and convincing teammates that it'll make an excellent presentation. also, i've been playing them for almost sixteen years, and they introduced me to the wonderful world of video games.

WHAT?
BASICALLY

you get a paragraph of description of what is going on around you, the main character.
Bathroom Stall

Frankly, you're still a little woozy, probably all those Long Island Iced Teas that you drank, but you've found yourself inside this skeezy bar's bathroom stall. The walls are covered with obscene graffiti and various bodily fluids. What's worse, you have company.

Redeemer is here, looking impatient.

then you're presented with a prompt, indicated by
>

and you have to react to it in a simple noun-verb construction, like the following

>FONDLE REDEEMER

He looks intrigued but motions to the spectre of Fiz outside the bathroom stall.

>HAPPY BIRTHDAY REDEEMER

I want to read an in-depth guide to how to play.

http://emshort.wordpress.com/how-to-play/

THAT'S DUMB

Fuck you, faggot.

I CHANGED MY MIND AND AM NOT RETARDED, BUT WHY SHOULD I CARE?

Well, I'm endorsing them. I'm awesome. You should do what I say.

Also, some of them are genuine pieces of art and actually pretty fucking fun to play. People spend all year designing new ones, which are released in the annual Interactive Fiction Competition. I'll get to that later, but some of the most rewarding games I've ever played came from this competition. YOU SHOULD TRY THEM

OK WHERE SHOULD I START

I'm going to assume that you're retarded, which is probably true.

I HAVE A MAC

Download this..

I HAVE A PC

Download this.

I HAVE SOME OTHER BULLSHIT

This stuff is written mostly by faggot nerds like yourself, so it's likely that you can find an interpreter for your system. Start here.

OK WHAT DID I JUST DOWNLOAD

I'll cut it short - text adventures are released in 'story files.' these usually have a .t3 or .z8 extension. these files are not platform specific, because they're not executable. You get an 'interpreter' (you just downloaded one) to play them.

You need it to play these games! I will assume you have this from now on. When i say 'open that shit', i mean use Gargoyle or whatever to do it.

Now you can start playing!

I KNOW ALL THAT SHIT NOW

Awesome! here's the part where i list the games which are awesome to play. To get at the story files, download the files labeled 'story file'.

Some of these are available as a java applet online.

I AM JUST STARTING OUT

Sorted by the order in which you should play them.

9:05

You're woken up by the telephone, having slept a lot longer than you should have, and there'll be hell to pay if you don't get out of the house in a hurry.

Aisle - this game is fantastic. I'm not going to provide a description, just play it.

Shade

A one-room game set in your apartment.

This is still my favourite IF. Play it.

I HAVE EITHER COMPLETED THAT SECTION OR HAVE PLAYED THESE IN THE PAST

Great!

Anchorhead

Do you like Lovecraft? Do you like horror? play this one.

Blue Chairs - Ridiculously cool.

Slouching Towards Bedlam - My other favourite IF. PLAY IT PLAY IT

Vespers. - A head of a monastery at the time of the Black Plague must solve a murder mystery. AWESOME

If you like these and want to play more, ask in the thread and I'll give you a recommendation.

OK BUT YOU'RE JUST REPEATING YOURSELF, WHAT ABOUT THAT COMPETITION THING
go here: http://ifcomp.org/comp08/download.html

You can find the game information here.

If, after playing, you want to vote on the ones you like best, go here.

A lot of these are probably shit - most usually are - but I know for a fact that Violet and Afflicted are definitely worth playing.

Violet is my favourite of the ones I played so far, and it's really fucking funny too. Seriously, it got me to make this thread. Play it.

I WANT TO WRITE ONE OF THESE

You're far from alone! People spend all year writing IF games for the annual competition. They recently released Inform 7, a system which is almost as fun to program with as playing the games are.

If you need help, it has the best documentation system I've ever seen. Also, if you have Google Groups, go to rec.arts.int-fiction, and people will answer your question ASAP. The people who designed the programming language post there, so you're in good hands.

OK BUT I HAVE A QUESTION

What are you, a fuckin' lurker? post it! we'll talk about it! i'm not the only person here who plays these - Tube does too, among many other people - so you'll get an answer soonish.

GET PLAYIN'

I played a bunch of crappy text adventures back in the day, but it seems that I managed to miss all the classics. I remember spending way too much time on a game where you were a Klingon. One of my first acts was to steal some vegetables and get irradiated by them.
