[Throbbing Green Shaft On... Maybe?] Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight
Force Unleashed? How about I unleash Kyle Katarn all over your face? What up now, bitches!?
That's right. Before the era of crazy realistically cracking wood there were jagged polygonal badasses with green sticks that went all "vwoom vwoom tshhhh!" I mean, before then we had some wicked shit too, but this is when it really took off for me.
So look, for all of you out there that aren't in the know, there was this crazy awesome FPS called Dark Forces that starred a character named Kyle Katarn. He was awesome and he wrecked a lot of Imperial shit, if you know what I mean. A while later, a second Dark Forces came out called Jedi Knight. Not only did it star the same awesome rebel badass as before, but now he had a lightsabre, righteous force powers, and even a branching story mode for Jedi and Sith endings.
I am playing through this game right now because TFU isn't interesting me that much even though I crave Jedi awesomeness. Who is with me, damnit!?
I just replayed this game last month. I might have bailed at the final fight, or second to last fight. I don't recall.
Anyway, does this game hold up.
Fuck YES this game holds up!
Seriously, the levels are still awesome as hell, with cool puzzles and huge designs and memorable locations. The gameplay is still fast and furious and super fun, the atmosphere is perfect despite the elderly graphics. The story is rock solid and the bosses are cool as fark.
Also, the game being as aged as it is, it runs blazing fast on just about anything now.
Truly amazing game and still among my favorite PC games of all time. Holds up GREAT. If you've never played it, I urge you to get a copy. It's seriously worth it.
What made this game great was it's multiplayer and the community that created so many mods and maps. I have the most enjoyable and fondest memories of online gaming from this game.

I used to spam force speed on do laps on a map while one hitting players with my light saber as i zip past at mach 10.
Then some hackers ruined the multiplay by somehow riding magic carpets and shooting 3 trillion fireballs an instant at everyone. I can't even imagine how they hacked magic fucking carpets into a starwars game.
I really played this to death back in the day. Did'n have an internet connection at the time (or dial up at the most) meaning multiplayer was a no-go.
But this game... I think this was one of the first games I played that was 3Dfx enabled so not only did it look beautiful because of the actual levels, but also because they were actually recognizable. One of the first games were I could just look around in awe at the huge environments they built for it.

I love this game. So much. The first time I fought the brothers, I remember thinking "Okay, I've won saber duels before and---ohmygod it's two on one."
Defeating them felt so badass.

On a related note, Kyle is getting an action figure release in a two pack with a Vong figure.
One of the greatest games ever. I remember my friend had this and we played it in software acceleration mode (graphics). Then he got a VooDoo 2. It was a whole new world.
Jedi Knight had fucking everything. Awesome levels, awesome bosses, super-cheesy FMV cutscenes. Fucking lightsabers. Used to play online back in the dial-up days too. Oh the lag! But it was so much fun.
This game was great. One of the first games I played online to a ridiculous amount.
Does anyone remember how you had to play this online? There was no in game lobby so you had to use services like Microsoft Zone! to be able to build a 4 player lobby that would then launch the game. Totally ridiculous.
I posted about my time with this game in TFU thread. I played this so much to the point that by the end I was hacking the shit out of it. Double bladed lightsabers, all force powers, repeaters that fired concussion rifle blasts. Just the most ridiculous stuff you can think of.
But I still had the most fun when I was playing legit.
I don't see why the hate for mysteries of the sith...it was sooooooooo coooool.
hate is such a strong word. Just the lack of of FMV was a disappointment.
But as I said, I never finished it. I don't remember the details but I got stuck at some point and couldn't figure out how to continue. Gave up and never tried again.

After Jedi Knight, it was something of a step down. The level designs wasn't nearly up to snuff. I eagerly purchased it, but like many, never finished it.
I tried playing MotS for the first time a year or two ago on my XP machine. Everything was all sped up. Speech and cutscenes were, anyway. Any way to fix that?

Are you on a dual core processor?
Nope. I'll give it a shot again later and come back with specifics.

Hm. The only fix I know is because both my processors were working on Deus Ex at once and it went twice the speed, so I had to disable one of them every time I launched the game.
Alternatively, compatibility mode did it too I think.
I don't have any problems with the game running too fast, but I get a weird hall of mirrors effect on random parts of the screen until the whole thing is covered and I have to go to the menu and back to clear it. It only happens in 3D accelerated mode, but I can't use the high def models in software mode and the game slows to a crawl (I can't believe I'm saying this) when I look at water. Anybody know what's going on?
I beat the game in 34 minutes. It was a pretty fun game to do a run of, with force speed and plenty of tricks and shortcuts you can use. The only two things I think could have gone better was an alternate route on level 15 that could have saved a few seconds, and the decision to get all the secrets on level 1.

Man I remember when this came out, I was a sophomore in high school. My friends and I stayed up all night playing it, taking turns until we beat it. Was so much fun.

Hey that's cool. I don't see an actual link to the video though.

Since i had been killing civilians while cackling maniacally, my Kyle became a dark sider.
Surprisingly, I couldn't stand being the bad dude, and restarted the whole game again to be a light sider.
Of course, it just meant i replayed more awesomeness.
Cool bosses? Or coolest bosses?
Why is that cool?
My solution was to take out the repeater and just keep firing 'till he was dead. Fuck the saber.
I barely touched the expansion. I think it was the lack of awesome FMV.

Didn't you learn anything while playing games? Frogs with swords of various types are inherently cool.

Likewise. I remember playing it online. It was glorious back then, and I especially loved that Bespin map.

DAMNIT WHY DIDN'T I KNOW ABOUT THIS A MONTH AGO!?
"Kyle! We need your help down at ops, they've got us pinned down!"
This needs to be added to the op. Right now.
