The PS3 firmware update version 2.50 is incoming. Here's a list of the currently announced improvements:
- Support for the PS3 Official Bluetooth Headset - we’ve told you about the upcoming Bluetooth Headset and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation Bundle on the Blog. This latest firmware installment enables High-Quality (HQ) mode, which delivers clear and wide-band online voice chat. On top of that, an added on-screen indicator shows battery status, volume level and use of HQ mode.
- PlayStation Trophies interface enhancements - I know that many of you are busy collecting trophies and raising your PlayStation Trophy level. This update makes sharing and comparing your trophies with your friends even easier. On 1st part of the profile page you’ll see a symbol under level that represents level and the actual percentage towards the next level along with the existing level meter. The level symbol carries over to the trophy comparison screen where you will now be able to see your level, your friend’s level and the percentage towards the next level for both users along with all of the game by game comparison information you see today.
- Friend status – Offline friends on your Friends list will have information below their avatars that will indicate how long it has been since they were last online.
- Video – This update adds the Scene Search feature similar to the feature on the PSP. Activating this feature while viewing a video on the PS3 will break the video up into scenes that you can quickly access by pressing the X button. You can break the videos into one, two or five minute intervals. In addition, you can now choose to have all of the videos under the video section of the XMB play in sequence. Go to Settings then Video Settings to turn this option on.
- PlayStation Store – We’ve added a redeem codes option right on the store to make it easier to redeem your PlayStation Network Cards and promotion codes. In addition, PlayStation Network Sign Up and Account Management have been redesigned.
- Power Save Settings – You can now set your PS3 and wireless controllers to turn off automatically after set periods of inactivity. Go to Settings then Power Save Settings to turn on these features.
- Background Downloading - You now have the option to set the PS3 to turn off automatically after a background download or installation of content has completed. This option is available when you turn off the system from the button under [Users] while content is being downloaded or installed.
- In-game Screenshots - this tool will allow everyone to capture, share and in other words, immortalize their favorite gameplay moments. This will be supported on a game by game basis. Please check back to find out which games will support this feature.
- In addition to all of the features above there are some additional features and enhancements included in 2.50. Once the update launches, you can read all of the details here.
- ADDED : Flash 9 content becomes supported on the Internet Browser.

Looks like a decent update. Definitely digging the in-game screenshot feature and auto-power down after downloads or inactivity.
Release Date: No ETA just yet, but rumored to be before the end of October (possibly before Little Big Planet next week?)
The PSP is also getting an update to v5.00, but I figure the PSP guys have they're own thread to discuss that.
EDIT: Firmware is coming out
[strike]WED, October 15th[/strike] NOW (apparently). Link and Full text of the update below:

Building upon the foundation set by previous firmware upgrades, the 2.50 system software update will refine existing features while also adding new functionality. The update will deliver exclusive options to support the official wireless headset, as previously announced, such as an on-screen indicator that shows volume, battery charge, and mute functions, as well as a High Quality (HQ) mode, which utilises advanced wireless technologies and the Headset’s dual-microphone design to enable clear and wide-band wireless voice communication with PS3 system. HQ mode greatly improves the voice chat experience in multi-player titles such as Resistance 2, which launches in November.
To further strengthen the gameplay experience on PS3, the firmware update will add an in-game screenshot capture tool, laying the groundwork for developers to add capture and sharing options to their games and allowing players to immortalise their favourite gaming moments and share them with friends. Titles that support the feature will be announced in the future.
The 2.50 update will also enhance the user interface for PS3 Trophies. When players acquire a Trophy, the in-game notification will now include the specific Trophy icon created by the developer, while more intuitive options for comparing Trophies with friends have been added, including an icon to represent each Trophy level. The Trophy system will continue to expand through future firmware updates, catering to the PS3 community and the competitive nature of the more than 12 million registered PlayStation Network users worldwide.
Other new features delivered through PS3 2.50 will include:
• Video – Video scene search functionality will provide thumbnails to help you find a particular scene in a video more easily.
• Information Board – The Information Board will be able to include direct links to PlayStation Store, making it easier for PS3 owners to download content that they read about on the Information Board.
• Power save – PS3 owners will have the option to automatically shut-off their console or controllers after pre-selected periods of inactivity.
• Flash 9 content becomes supported on the Internet Browser.
PSP Firmware 5.00 Update
The PSP Firmware 5.00 update will add direct PlayStation Store access to the system, eliminating the need for PSP to be connected to a PC or PS3 to download content. PSP owners will be able to download games, demos, trailers, and other game-related content anytime and anywhere that their PSP is connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi. This functionality delivers on the portable promise of PSP, making the device even more compelling for gaming and entertainment on-the-go.
Additional enhancements delivered through PSP 5.00 will include:
• On-screen keyboard – A full-size, on-screen keyboard will be added to make text entry during Web browsing easier and more convenient.
• Sleep timer – During music playback, a sleep timer will enable users to shut off their PSP after a specified amount of time.
• Video-out – The PSP-2000’s video-out feature will be able to display PlayStation format software (classics titles) at the full-screen size of the TV that the PSP is connected to; the feature will also support interlace displays.
Thanks for the link GrimReaper
Also noted this update will include Flash 9 support, which should increase the PS3 Browser's capabilities immensely.

Any rumors on a Home public beta? Or should I just stop getting excited over it?
Also the power save feature is long overdue.
I'm betting that the photo mode will be supported in all games made with new enough firmware.
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
November 15 is the current rumor.
Tumblr
judging by the custom soundtrack support so far it aint looking good
Yeah, I think the only game I play with a soundtrack is GT5: Plg. I think for the time being it's pretty much up to the developer to incorporate it in.
I never gave this much though, but does Snake's iPod allow custom soundtracks on MGS4.
Tumblr
... and finally controllers are getting some kinda power saving, always a bitch to remember to turn them off.
Nope.
The only games I've played that use it are Burnout Paradise and Wipeout HD.
Do... Re... Mi... So... Fa.... Do... Re.... Do...
Forget it...
Warhawk is preaty awsome with custom soundtrack also.
Wait, GT5P has custom soundtracks? Or is it not available in the downloadable version or something?
I believe PixelJunk Eden and Warhawk are the only games available that supports the PS3's custom soundtrack feature. There are other games that support custom soundtracks (like Super Stardust HD, Wipeout HD and Burnout Paradise) but I'm pretty sure they programmed it themselves, rather than use Sony's program. MGS4 doesn't support custom soundtracks by the way, though you can download songs (for free) when Kojima Productions put them online.
Also, of course you're not going to see many games supporting custom soundtracks just a few months after it was released. What, do you think they just flip a switch and it suddenly works perfectly fine? No. The facts of the matter are, if Sony includes new features so late in the cycle (like custom soundtracks and screenshots), you're not going to see many games support them for a year or so.
Hell, the only reason so many games are supporting trophies this holiday season is because they're so similar to Achievements.
Its in there, but yeah requires dev to code it in. (Eden uses it)
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
Would 'skate' fall into this category of being able to record gameplay?
Yes. I want to be able to use voice chat in any game.
Which is nice.

I've got a spare copy of Portal, if anyone wants it message me.
That was unexpectedly quick. They must have really wanted to get this out before LBP drops next week.
other than 2.4, which thanks to in-game xmb had a lead up about as long as the ps3's life
I know this has been posted already about a million times, but fuck. Finally.
So... I'm from the future?
edit: super quick download! i hope this means the store's back up
Nice! Dee-elling.
I don't know if I get the point of flash 9 though, I always get out of memory errors on pages like hulu and pandora.
Flash updates taking so long is Adobe's fault. They take forever to release SDKs. This is part of the reason Flash for Linux is usually so far behind.
Anyone think it's too much to ask for Silverlight/Moonlight now?
As a PS3 owner since launch... this thing has really done a 180... For better not worse.
And why the Wii/iPhone browsers flash support are so out of date.
Anyway, I've been fiddling around with it and there's some pretty good improvements in there. The Account Management was pretty outdated after the new PS Store launched and the new layout is WAY better. Flash support is pretty good, though I didn't spend much timing playing around with it. The other stuff is pretty good too (particularly the sequential video playing and power saving).
The controller battery display still appears over the clock though, it really shouldn't take this long to fix that...
