Yeah... but see the difference is this isn't Japan co-opting Christianity to try to seem deep in some nauseating and creepily pretentious way.

It's co-opting it to be totally ridiculous.

And that, my friends, is A-OKAY in my book.

It is. A vampire is a full demon that inhabits a corpse using the deceased's personality and memories. Half Demons are still human on some level and enjoy sundaes and pizza.

Soul Reaver is closer to Zelda than DMC.

I dunno, they seem pretty similar.

    Wait.

I mean the other thing. The one where they aren't at all alike except being sort of in the same genre of games. Just from the demo of DMC4 it's blatantly obvious. DMC4 feels like it's half as fast and nowhere near as smooth in combat. Also, in Ninja Gaiden 2 men are men, not girly boys that need belts to hold up their belts.

To be serious for a moment, I genuinely don't get how someone could play both games and think they're the same thing. About all the have in common is a) swords, b) 3rd-person view, and c) both made in japan. And demons, I guess. They seem as similar to me as CoD4 is to Halo.

Low difficulty? NG2, in chapter 1, with the difficulty turned all the way down, isn't really Ninja Gaiden yet. I can kind of see someone with an undiscerning eye mistaking it for a frenzied button masher of some kind. And someone with that undiscerning an eye would likely miss out on most of the finer points of DMC, as well. Also assuming the difficulty is bumped all the way down.

Granted, I'm not entirely sure I'm comfortable with the fact that a person that oblivious could be out there somewhere. Or could be participating in a decision that impacts the future of my country next month. Or could be driving. Or operating a microwave, for that matter. They could have kids, or pets, and oh fuck the microwave. No that is not your bowl of macaroni it is your little turtle Shelly!

Er, really the only difference is that you can take a hit or three in DMC. I didn't find the combat in NG2 to be any faster. The real difference is that in NG2 you spend most of your time dodging and blocking as opposed to actually attacking anything. You spend most of your offense time just repeatedly performing Izuna Drops, because if anything gets ahold of you it's an easy 50% off your life bar.

I only went through the hard mode on NG2. I guess on the superhard it probably plays a bit differently, though I somehow doubt that you play any more offensively.

Method of attacking, timing of attacks, methods of dodging. It's almost exactly the same with a bit of emphasis change.

I'd played the first 3 DMCs before I even touched NG or NG2. I had virtually no trouble adapting to the slight difference in playstyle, though I got really tired of having to block and dodge so much and attack so little. Huge gigantic list of combos for each weapon in NG2, and virtually all of them were totally useless. Same for the weapons. Scythe and Sword, with a little bit of the others before I wrote them off.

DMC is a true gem in the minds of my friends and I. Nowhere else has there been such refined control and gameplay in the action genre. DMC 1, 3 and 4 (to a slightly lesser extent) are all fantastic examples of what to do in action games. some people didn't like 4 and that's completely understandable. They did some things that really shouldn't have been done, but in the end made a lot of DMC fans happy because it wasn't horrid like 2 and was very very close to the awesome that was 1 and 3.

Now, when the guy who made DMC 1 decides to say that he feels the genre hasn't evolved, only been added to and modified and that he has every intention and all the ambition in the world to create that very evolution, I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt. He created a game so highly heralded by my gamer friends (as WELL as creating Okami and Viewtiful Joe).

my friends and I always say "Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden 2 are good, but they're no DMC".

anyways, the point is I hope Bayonetta ends up being truly amazing and a game that brings it to the next level. The whole in-your-face-sex is irrelavent. If I can laugh my ass off at the ridiculous cut scenes (assuming they will be full of afformentioned in-your-face-sex) and look amazingly awesome while doing some of the most absurd combat moves ever seen then I will be happy. If all of that can then be applied to a combat system that is deep, rewarding and extremely fun then I will have found a true gem.

I understand the disdain for the in-your-face-sex, I just don't agree. Yeah, it's lame and tired, but it's not real it's all an obvious attempt to be so over the top it's ridiculous so I'm gonna enjoy it for what it is. crotch shots galore, tits in your face, guns blazing everywhere and (assuming) deep, amazingly done combat.

if the combat sucks though, then it'll suck completely.

oh and the differences in DMC (3 and 4):

NG has solid combat, careful attacks and defenses to be carried out. However, the combat is ALL dial-a-combo. In it's most raw format it's Dead or Alive in action game form. If you can't understand that or disagree, then reading the rest of this is pointless. I know people are going to say that DoA has nothing to do with careful attacks and defenses and they are right. The similarity comes from being dial-a-combo. You have the x, x, y, y, attack (dragon sword), the x, x, x, y attack (dragon sword)...and so on. You have variations of the same combo type that end in different ways. You have other options available than just that branch, but so do the DoA games.

the NG games are great games, but they aren't as good (or well made) as DMC 1 and 3. (4 to a lesser extent).

DMC 3 has phenominal combat. You are given complete control over the combat. You have combo's just like in NG1 and NG2, but the difference is that you can choose to add in anything else you want. Instead of doing the basic melee, melee, back + melee you could do (as a quick example), melee, melee, jump + ranged, mid-air melee to another enemy entirely, grounding melee attack from mid-air, forward + melee...etc etc and have it all connect as if it were one huge combo without delay in animations. You can instantly switch from 1 weapon to another and add that in to your combo as well. The instant weapon switching is what really made DMC 3 so top notch. It added SO GOD DAMN much to the playabiity and choice it gave the player.

both are similar in few ways, but DMC 3 goes so deep whereas NG plays a different game. NG1 and NG2 are fantastic games, but they just don't go into the offensive game nearly as much as DMC does. It, instead, goes for the defensive game (which is great in its own right).
