Let's flush this game down the toilet and get Marvel Vs Capcom 1 instead. It's better.
Yeah?
No.
It was fun, to be sure. But it also had a fraction of the character selection, a duo instead of a trio for your team, and was slower. So yeah, how about we keep the one that has all the good stuff from the first game and even better improvements?
I don't see how the online will really be playable in comparison to playing on the same machine. This is not the sort of game where everything being a fraction of a second out of alignment is a bonus. Hosts will likely have much more of an advantage than they usually get.
I always liked 2 more than 1, granted I was never very good at either. If online play is anything like Soul Caliber, it'll be pretty lame... but meh. Worth it by itself simply for local play IMO.

I liked 2 better than 1, but probably because of the whole 4 button controller thing. I didn't have money then to buy an arcade stick. Arcade stick factored in, and I enjoy the first far more.
And, yes. 80% of my argument could be the fact that the first game let me hear the theme from Mega Man 2 when Mega Man hit the screen. That and Roll's song was nice to.

I initially didn't like the 4-button scheme for MvC2, but I got over once I realized that two extra buttons for punches and kicks was pretty superfluous. Most attacks are either fast or strong, so why bother with an attack that is neither very fast or very strong?
And I liked the turbo-charged feel of everything in MvC2. It was basically saying, right at the start, that if you aren't ready to fight like a mongoose on an expresso IV, you might want to play something else. Having it right next to the DDR machine at the arcade I played at certainly helped reinforce the techno vibe (as well my seething hatred for the goth people who were inexplicably obsessed with something that should have been anathema to them).
The game is actually fairly balanced. A large selection of the cast is competitive with one another, and potentially competitive with the best characters. Infinites are very seldomly problematic. There are only 2 characters with infinites that are realistic in a competitive setting. One, Magneto, does not rely on the infinite to actually do damage, but uses it to setup combo resets. The other, Iron Man, has a dangerous infinite that is difficult to setup.
In tournament play, glitches are generally not banned. Juggernaut's power up, Tron Bonne's assist, Ken's air hurricane kick are all fair game, they also do not really increase the value of these characters. The only banned glitches are the ones that either freeze/lock up the game, or something similar (Gambit flying off the screen).
The game is very, very deep. At a very high level, it's entirely about maintaining position and controlling space. Someone like Cable controls significant amount of space, but has a very difficult time maintaining his position relative to Magneto, Storm or Sentinel. Over the course of it's lifetime, the game has evolved significantly. It started out being entirely trap characters, where Spiral, Cable, Blackheart and Doom whittled away the opponent by controlling space, and limiting movement. Now, as technical skill and reactions have been honed, the favored characters are the ones with extreme speed advantages (Magneto, Storm, Sentinel).
The first game is better than the second in many respects.
This actually came up in one of the old SSBB threads - the first game is more solid and thoughtful. You had backdrops like Dr. Wily's Castle and Avengers Mansion (or at least I think that's what that room with all the monitors was; it might have been S.H.I.E.L.D. or something) and way, way better music, including themes for various characters.
MvC2 doesn't have any of that and feels like a slap-dash production by comparison. That makes sense, since it really is just a bunch of crap from several years of games thrown together. It doesn't have the cohesive feel that the first game does.
And while the first game has a more limited roster, it's a better chosen one than the second game (particularly in regard to the final boss).
That doesn't mean I don't like MvC2; I love it and have logged tons of time into my DC copy. I was briefly into the competitive scene but now find it fairly nauseating.
MvC1 and 2 are very, very different games. I like them both.
I'd be all for an MvC3 done in the same style as Capcom vs Takewhatever the Speed Racer Guys. The roster could use some serious tweaking: fewer Street Fighter characters and fewer oddball Marvel characters for starters.
....which is exactly why I like it. I dig me some crazy crap.
It's not the most balanced game in the world, but it's not horribly broken either and is perfectly fine for people who don't play competitive and just want to have fun (i.e., 99.4 percent of the buying public).
... Having it right next to the DDR machine at the arcade I played at certainly helped reinforce the techno vibe (as well my seething hatred for the goth people who were inexplicably obsessed with something that should have been anathema to them).
I blame them for the death of the arcade (kindasorta). There were times when I'd walk right by an arcade when I saw people in the process of dancing. It just...didn't feel right to me, personally. Hella good for them, I suppose, but the second I heard someone say that they got served, I died a little.
On the new Alpha-Ism radio, they discuss how they could balance the game a bit more. Mostly keep the top tier tops, but push up the mid and low tier characters to a competitive level.
Man I remember buying this on PS2 for like $40 and then selling it a year or two later for $65... best negative 25 dollars I ever spent.
I'm not very good at it, but this is one of the games I've been hoping would hit Live Arcade ever since I got my 360 so I hope this turns out to be true.
But what am I supposed to do when I face that motherfucker who spams Sentinel's satellites and Rocket Punch while mashing Dr. Doom's assist?
Get up and go make a sandwich.
I was gonna say a lot more, but decided against it. I don't like playing against those types, even if I can win. It's like Kilik spammers in SCIV, I can beat the snot out of them if the lag isn't too bad, but I don't have fun.
Man, if they started re-balancing things and removing exploits, infinites, what-have-you, then the Internet might explode from the all the bitching. Might even make Smash Bros. threads seem tame!
Er... maybe not.
marvel vs. capcom 2 is so broken, might as well make a whole new game. They should just cut all characters except the 4-6 usable ones and there you have it
Well. I have heard an interesting perspective from the guys who are really into the game - if you look at this game as "characters", you're missing the forest for the trees. The game's not about characters, it's about teams. 6 usable point character and about 10 or so usable assist characters, and you have ... well, a lot of viable teams.
Mix this with the fact that different assists dramatically affect how a player can play (since at higher levels the gameplay becomes less about throwing around projectiles and more about trying to keep the other guy from killing your ass) having a more defensive "safe" assist like captain commando's is going to allow you to be safe with your magneto rushdown than if you had picked sentinal's more aggressive drone move or something.
Not that it matters to me, I still wait for guilty gear or 3rd stike to get online play. But whatever.

Third Strike is on GGPO and XBL on the anniversary collection.
And only GG Reload is online, and if you want to keep up with the comp for current Guilty Gear games, it'll just mess you up. I've heard it has a good online community, though.

But Guilty Gear IS online.
I bought the Xbox Originals version of GG XX #Reload through Live and its... not all that great of a port. And NO ONE plays online apparently.
Well, i'm just saying, that while I'm a fighting game nerd, I really don't have a big hard-on for MvC2. By the time I learned about all it's deep gameplay and excellent tournament scene, most of the people in my crowd had kinda moved on to other games. Plus I really don't feel like learning combos.
But I'll take a XBL re-release anyday, that is what's going on here, right?
Wow. I own this game for the Xbox, Ps2 and Dreamcast, and I'd completely forgotten about the douche-bag announcer. I think I cranked the "Voice" volume all the way down on day one. Either that or I've just tuned him out so much that I forget he existed until this post.
...........I also used techniques that shalt not be spoken of to replace the take-you-for-a-ride music with the character select music from Street Fighter II. So awesome.
I love this game because it has ninjas and samurais and completely worthless characters that are still super fun to play (Dan, Hayato).
I know there's a competitive game in there - but there's also a game that's almost on par with Smash Bros. for getting even non-gamers interested, simply due to the breadth and recognizability of the roster.

No, it hasn't. And since when has FFVII been worth that much anyway? It's not exactly a rare game.
Not rare, expensive. $53.78 average price on Ebay as of today.

My biggest enemy is Magneto's super-rushdown and the lag should at least reduce that if not grease it entirely.
Of course the lag could just make it worse. That would suck.

1) You guarantee two IMMEDIATE sales.
2) You guarantee that I won't buy anything for a long time, since those two are what I'd be playing.
