Company of Heroes?

What is Company of Heroes
Company of Heroes is a Real Time Strategy game by Relic, the guys who made Homeworld (yay) and Dawn of War (sort of yay). It's set in World War II and it's awesome.

Why is Company of Heroes Awesome?
A better question would by why ISN'T it awesome. CoH, as we call it, does pretty much everything right. From the presentation to the gameplay, it hits as close to perfection as RTS games ever really get. The graphics and sound are amazing, and the maps are all fully destructable. Smash down walls with your Tiger tank and shell the enemy base with your mighty artillery under a dynamic day-night cycle! On some maps.

Then we come to the gameplay. CoH does a number of rather innovative things. You control squads, rather than individual units. Cover is essential: hide behind sandbags or bushes to keep your men safe. A mixture of hard and soft counters makes choosing your units and preserving them of paramount importance. A tank can squish infantry without getting hurt! The action is nonstop, because resources come from parts of the map that you control and that you have to constantly keep protected.

What is Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts?

Opposing fronts is a stand-alone expansion for CoH. It adds two new sides to the franchise, the Panzer Elite and the British Commonwealth Forces. Both sides get their own single player campaign: The Panzer Elite take on Operation: Market Garden, whilst the British 2nd Army liberates Caen.

What is Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor?

Tales of Valor is a stand-alone expansion that adds a few short single player campaigns, three new multiplayer modes, and gives you access to all four factions and a few unlockable units for those factions if you own CoH and/or OF. The new game modes include one where you, your teammates, and your enemies each control a single tank and fight for control of a map, one where you do the same thing only with an infantry dude, and a coop mode where you and your friends hold out against waves of Wehrmacht attackers.

What is a stand-alone expansion?

A stand alone expansion is just that- an expansion that does not need the original game to be played. Opposing Fronts will allow buyers to play the two expansion Campaigns and the two expansion sides online. To unlock the two original sides, Wehrmacht and American armies, you have to buy the original CoH. It's very cheap though, and you can buy it on Steam. Your best bet is just to buy Tales of Valor, though, which gives you very few single player options but all the multiplayer factions for the low, low price of money.

Panzer Elite and British Commonwealth, eh? Whats makes them so different?

British Commonweath Forces

cohbcfdocsdv5.jpg

Some British quirks:

British Commonwealth Forces rely on a strong chain of command. British forces do not gain veterancy, their officers do. Troops supported by their officers are mighty indeed.

The British base system is based on Command Trucks. Command trucks are mobile buildings that can setup in any territory to increase the supplies coming from that territory.

The British have the strongest defenses in the game and the most powerful artillery to back them.

Panzer Elite Forces

cohpedocsef8.jpg

Panzer Elite quirks:

No defenses - Only defenses are doctrine specific. The Panzer Elite are a highly mobile force, you'll have to outmaneuver your opponent rather than outgun them with static positions.

Panzer Elite forces are a highly mechanized force. The Panzer Elite have more vehicles types than infantry. With access to over 8 different kinds of half tracks, you can get to the fight with what you need.

Panzer Elite use very specialized forces. Few squads/vehicles are made for all-purpose fighting. Rather, you must use combined arms to overcome the opponent. Once every piece falls into place, your war machine will be unstoppable.

Shoutcasts:
Just getting in to the game? Wondering whether you should buy it? Love it and want to see some commentary with your replays? Love the sound of Welsh accents? Really bored? Want to ingratiate yourself with two very specific people? YOU'RE IN LUCK!!!! The Penny Arcade community is home to two Company of Heroes Shoutcasters. A shoutcaster is like the sports announcer at a football game but nerdier. We provide witty, insightful commentary to greatly enhance your replay watching experience. You can find these shoutcasts at GameReplays, mentioned later in this post. More specifically:

CasinoGhost's Shoutcasts! (Click on Profile Options > Find Member's Topics)

TychoCelchuuu's Shoutcasts! (Same deal)

Useful Resources:
www.coh-stats.com
- A website that has accurate and precise information on every unit, and the intricacies of every part of game play. Got a question on how upkeep or suppression work mechanically? Or the actual bonuses you get when you activate abilities like "Inspired Assault" or "For the Fatherland!"? Find it here! This site has recently been updated and is now 90% awesome and 10% "why does hovering over a menu option swap what page I'm on."

GameReplays.org
- An excellent site for nearly any RTS, game replays offers a variety of strategies and tips for new players, in addition to detailed replays that show them in action. Having trouble figuring out how to stop a PE armored car rush or other devilish tactic? Watch other players conquer it and learn here! Also great if you like idiocy in large numbers or shoutcasts. It's a bit of a wretched hive of scum and villainy, but there's a ton of awesome stuff there too. You win some, you lose some.

Tales of Heroes
- A Company of Heroes show, pretty much. On hiatus right now, but lots of the episodes are still online. Two awesome hosts plus a bunch of awesome games = great Company of Heroes times to be had.

NEVER RELIC ABANDONED US THEY HATE EVERYONE THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT DAWN OF WAR II

Actual answer is nobody knows. Relic probably forgot they're working on it, to be honest. There's like a guy and a half assigned to it.

Add me to that list you jerk!! I watch your SC! My Steam name is The Cow King.

I had a intense game last night, except re watching it seems like the British player was playing horrible but I still took me forever to swing the game in my favour :\.

I can never get god damn tanks to snipe either, my Marder's only got kills when he rushed em with a Cromwell and a firefly.

Actually they're supposedly in the final stages of fooling around with the patch. The beta is being taken down, or may have already been taken down. They made their announcement about it.

If Pumas don't get nerfed in the beta (from the beta change they did on recieved accuracy), I don't see how this game is going to be worth a damn anymore.

You literally can't hit the damn things. They can charge up on a an AT gun and RR paratrooper head on and lay waste to everything, then leave without a scratch. It's like a AC on a million screwed up drugs.

Recieved accuracy buffs are the worst idea in the game. They effectively nullify both soft AND hard counters.

Mines if you're lucky enough to get a destroyed engine. Damaged engine doesn't mean anything when you've got a 45% increased chance to miss something that's already hard to hit. And who are you going to use off map artillery on to hit a heavy vehicle? That's a neat trick I'd like to see. Pull it off against anyone above rank 6 and I'll mail you a cookie.

As for Zooks and AT shells, lol. GG Kinder.

Once again we've got your opinion going one way, and pretty much every Beta tester going the other way.

TekDragon is hereby banned from talking about balance! So is everyone else. Until the patch.

So who wants to solve my CoH problem? It runs at ~60 FPS on max settings like it always has, but sometimes it slows down to ~15 FPS for about 20 seconds until it jumps back up. On a replay I just watched it would do this, PLUS it would slow down whenever I looked at the King Tiger. Any part of the map would be at 60 FPS but if I scroll over to the KT it's down to 15 FPS. Laaaame. Anyone ever fixed this?

I've gotten back into this game in the past couple months and in that time my skills have greatly improved. Still stuck on rank 6, but my micro isn't the strongest yet. Just recently I've started playing 2 v 2 AT with my brother and we've had some really good games both going PE and dividing the tech buildings between the two of us.

This lets us combine arms and with voice communication our opponents have no one way to counter us without coordination on their part. What I feel we have to work on is our own communication, keeping up the chatter so we know where we are needed.

While 1 v 1 games are fun and all, there's nothing like using teamwork to crush the other team!

Man, I hope the patch comes out in like the next two weeks or something. I've been itching to get back into playing US, and I'm only going to do it once they patch in the experience boost to Riflemen that comes with researching Riflemen upgrades. It seems like a nice solution to late game vet 3 Grenadiers.

Good guess, because when I accidentally only had one stick of RAM in, I had those symptoms only 100x worse. The problem is, why would my performance suddenly go down now? I've always had this computer and only recently has it been crappy.

It's honestly not going to make any difference. They did the number crunching on it. In the end it's a difference of not having to kill 2 guys to get to vet 3 if you factor in the time it takes to get the upgrades. Considering that's for well over 100 fuel in upgrades for a unit with no real anti armor ability (Kinder's claims of being able to easily sticky vehicles micro'd by good players not withstanding) and junk armor.. it's more of a gimmick than a real balance issue.

That said, I'm all for gimmicks.

I have always felt that a "random" within axis and allies really should be a feature.

Sometimes you don't know which faction you really want to pick when you're playing a match, but you're on a certain team. Have a random, axis or random, allies feature for that.

Could it really be that hard?

With Relic the question is not "is it really that hard" but rather "if they didn't fix 1 second artillery for months, are they really going to go out of their way to add something like that?"

    Random All
    Random Allies only
    Random Axis only
    Random Vanilla only
    Random OF only

That's too much work. Better policy would be just putting the 4 factions up like maps, they start out all deselected, and you check the ones you want to play. If you want to play US, just select US. If you want to play everyone but PE, select everyone but PE.

But people have been asking for something like this for ages. Not going to happen. I hear they've only got ONE guy doing beta development at Relic. Everyone else is off working on DoW2.

Company of Heroes takes a lot of great concepts that DoW had and really builds on it. The most obvious of these is the use of cover in Company of Heroes. Dawn of War was certainly a great game, but I don't think I'd take it over COH now, especially with the game approaching another one of its large game-changing patches. In my eyes, Company of Heroes is where they wanted to take Dawn of War, and where they play to take Dawn of War II. Not to mention the Platinum pack doesn't give you Soulstorm, which gives you beta access to Dawn of War II whenever they start rolling it out.

CoH is pretty much Dawn of War 1.5. The only reason to get Dawn of War over CoH is if you like Warhammer 40k so much you're willing to get a less refined game. CoH improves on everything.

No, you can play if you only own the expansion, or if you only own the original. The expansion lets you play Panzer Elite and British, whereas the original lets you play American and Wehrmacht.
