If it's as good as Soldiers: Heroes of WW2 it'll be worth $30. Of course we know almost nothing so right now it's a bit of a moot point.

I had a dream where I was playing a match on Angoville. I was using a Jagdpanther, a Marder, a few StuGs, a Calliope + airdropped AT guns, and commandos. The commandos were there to chase off the PIAT-fallschirmjagers, but to no avail: they took out the Jagdpanther in a few seconds with the help of a Firefly painted with Wehrmacht camo. This was down at the entrance to my base in the south, on the left hand side, while my opponent fired a Calliope in his base at my Callipe near the left cutoff point that was bombarding a couple of squads of riflemen in his base that I somehow had sight on.

No I did not make this up. It was perhaps the large Thanksgiving dinner I ate that precipitated this.

I got pissed yesterday because I lost 6 matches in a row. So today I swore I wouldn't lose the next one. Well I'm on Semois as level 8 American against a level 8 PE. You know how armor company is the lame duck now?

    Well...

I was pushed back into my base from StG44'ed PGs and an infantry HT, and I was rapidly losing control of the map. I call in a Calliope, which blasted the fuck out of the church where he had 3 PG squads garrisoned. He builds a Marder to take care of my upcoming armor company. So I build an MG to pin the PGs and then get an AT gun with Calliope support to kill the Marder.

Then he calls in his two Panthers. Twice.

Luckily, I popped out a Pershing and Allied Imba Machine(tm), along with several rifles/engies and sniper support to cap. I was down to like 20 VPs before the tide turned and I took control of the map. The game was 55 minutes long and I'm shaking like a crack whore gone cold turkey.

Even though this game pisses me off to no end, when you finally get a decent win it feels incredible. I came back from having nothing but a rifle squad and an engineer squad at 20 minutes in to retaking map control with armor company. If I had lost the game, I would have praised my opponent for such a well-fought victory. It was so fun to play, and this replay is definitely shoutcast material.

I've been out the loop for a while, but I think Americans are pretty easy to get into. Their play style is pretty fluid and it's more about mastering their mechanics (rifle flanking, circle strafing, and etc) rather than learning a bunch of strategies.

If you want to be man though, you can learn Wehr. (It's actually not really a harder start point; not with tier 2 terror: http://www.gamereplays.org/companyofheroes/portals.php?show=page&name=wehrmacht_t2terror1)

Stay away from 2v2, unless you are a masochist.

In general GR is pretty much the only competitive community for the game, so all the strats are there. There should be stickies in the forum with indexes of accumulated strategies in each race's sub-forum.

    1. Play a few skirmishes or random "noob only" matches until you've got the very basics for the army you want to play.
    2. Go to GR.org and read some strats for the army you want to play.
    3. Start playing 1v1 automatch.
    4. Go back to GR.org after your first few wins or losses to compare notes.
    5. Go to CoH Unit Statistics when you start wanting specific answers (does a Marder 3 outrange an AT gun?)
    6. Keep playing automatch.

As far as which army you want to play, it depends on your style.

PE is currently the easiest faction in almost any scenario with the fastest teching, hardest counters, and bugged units that defy their logical counters. I play them when I want to get cheap wins, but winning with PE doesn't get you any respect in the current version.

US, Wher, and Brits fluctuate depending on which map you're playing on. US and Wher are currently pretty balanced against each other with US being about how well you control your rifles and special infantry until your M8 or Sherman hits the field and Wher being early game gimmick (MG pin, zombie volks, pio spam, or bike spam) leading to either vetted infantry spam (T2 terror/defence) or vehicle/armor oriented (T3 blitz). Brits aren't my thing, but some people dig it. They're usually at the bottom of the pile, barely holding on against PE and getting slaughtered by most of the new Wher MG/bike strats. On a map with a few close high resource points, however, they can sometimes hold their own.

PS. Real men used to play Wher, then they learned how to zombie spam. T3 Blitz players still have massive cajones, though. No doubt about it.

The game is still splendidly active. I couldn't complain about the player participation at all, nor really notice any significant decline for that matter. Gamereplays.org will give you most of what you want to know in the COH portal, and Wehr is slightly tougher to learn early on than US. US is, typically, a more forgiving faction, and lets you develop stronger judgement abilities that can apply better to Wehrmacht. Defending a flank is a lot harder than executing one, and once you get ample experience in executing the classic rifle flanks against a Wehrmacht player it'll help you deal with them better if you decide to make the switch.

Brits and PE are in a league of their own. The whole AC spam can be a real joke, especially on larger maps like Sturzdorf and Semois.

Best games are US vs. Wehr.

Also, I usually get a 1v1 or 2v2 automatch in less than 30 seconds.

    British are wholly map dependent.

Put them in a small area where their emplacements cover all key chokepoints and resources, that's GG right there.

Maps like Beaux Lowlands and Semois... ugh they're terrible.

US is a forgiving faction in that you can lose a few skirmishes but you won't be too far behind in terms of macro.

Wehrmacht is the hardest faction outside of a few specific instances (Wrecked Train comes to mind). They're also the most rewarding.

PE is for facerollers and drag-clickers who like easy wins. And they're getting a massive kick in the balls come next patch after well over a year of their bullshit.

People tend to over-estimate PE at lower levels though. They blob a lot of PGs together, but are then taken out by artillery, crocs, MGs, or (especially) any combination thereof. My Calliope had like 40 something infantry kills against PE in my epic Semois game I described a few posts earlier.

I think Brits need the kick in the balls more than anything.

Is there any finesse to British? All the clever tactics and innovation seem to come from Wehr, while all I can do is make trenches at the middle and turtle. I've never really been confident enough to get into automatch and competitive play because of this.

CasinoGhost chose that one actually. I have no idea what that song is. Good song though.

And yes, GuyMontag, there's finesse for every side, but that's generally at slightly higher levels like 8+ or something. For beginner Brits turtling up is generally how it begins.

LT micro takes a lot of finesse. You want to keep him range, but a good opponent will target him, and you need to remember to retreat him. Command tanks for the same reason.

Stuarts take finesse for lining up their canister shot and using them like an M8 otherwise.

    Firefly, obviously.

And yes, the Bren Carrier needs finesse as well.

Argh. I just can't seem to beat PE as British anymore.

Infantry HT spam or Scout Car spam hems me in before I can get up more than a mortar pit, my bren carrier dies fast to infantry halftracks, and while they're keeping my troops locked in their trenches, the ketten is zooming around the map taking everything.

If I go straight for a Stuart, I get it shortly before their Marder/Panzershrecks, if I'm lucky, and Sappers can't manage to put up a Bofors anywhere it would be effective without them seeing it and gunning it to death.

Strangely, I've had more success against wehrmacht now that I've gotten used to every wehr player and their mother trying the hq pin.

I think I'm done with British for a while. Gonna see how I do focusing on Wehrmacht.

Brits are massively UP at the moment (and likely forever given the look of the beta) in that both Axis armies now have pretty solid strats for putting them in a deep hole.

Wher is fun, and a lot more forgiving. Mainly it's more fun, since there's so many strats you can do. MG pins, MG/bikes, pio spam, T2 terror, T3 blitz, etc. Or you can announce your homosexuality to the world and zombie spam.
