You could kill children in the older Fallout games, and it was funny.
Now, you can't kill children, and nobody will make me believe it has nothing to do with rating boards and parents bitching and news demonizing games. It's got EVERYTHING to do with that. Like, 100%.
Welcome to the world that a lot of gamers wished for...a world where games were known and recognized and popular, instead of being the backalley diversion they used to be viewed as.
Welcome to the spotlight.
I find that there's something terribly wrong with the entirety of our society. It just doesn't work right for me. A world where anything is censored, even a tiny bit, to please a bigger audience (or to not piss it off) is offensive and insulting to me.

Put yourself in the developers shoes. What good comes of including child murder versus the enormous pain in the balls it would generate. Its just not worth it. I mean they have to think of their profit margins and all that other jazz, its just not good business turning a major investment into a niche product by including some heinous and ultimately pointless shit.

Well, you aren't going to find much of a world then. This isn't Big Brother hauling Bethesda execs off to the Ministry of Love. Self censorship has been a part of producing in any media of art or entertainmetn for something like seven thousand years.
Fallout 3: Watered Down So Bestheda Stay Friends With The Nice Ratings Board Men
Fallout 3: not an attempt to kill the company producing it.
Fallout 3: Not Rated AO.
Didn't this line of discussion basically get burned out on Bioshock? If you kill kids, the ESRB ups your rating. If your game gets rated AO, it isn't carried, anywhere. Anybody try to get a copy of GTA:SA after it got rerated? Until the decaffeinated version was released, it was pretty much impossible.
Fallout 1 and 2 both let you, and were both rated M.. And I don't think anyone is saying that F3 will be a bad game for not letting you, just that it's very silly that games that let you kill people in huge numbers make children invincible
I'm not too excited about Fallout's achievements anyhow. They seem fairly easy and most of them are storyline related anyhow. Thats about the only thing I'm not excited about.
Only about 4 more hours until i can go get my copy =/
I know this sounds dumb but I'm pretty sure Fallout got away with killing children in the first games because it was PC only. Now it's on the consoles and as far as consoles go the ESRB is way more strict about that shit than on PC.
Now to completely destroy my argument: Can't you kill kids in Fable II?
Not a matter of the mouth of Satan. If it gets rated AO, stores usually need to get the same documents they would need to carry pornography. In some states, this cab mean applying to the zoning board because your business district isn't classified for adult sales. Read your local newspaper regularly to find out how much of a picnic dealings with zoning boards are. So stores just don't carry them, which means they don't get sold, which means they don't get made. Maybe Bioshock would have been a better game if you could shoot the little sisters, but not very many people would know it was.
What? No. I mean.... what?
There are laws regarding pornographic videos, magazines, and the like. None of these has been applied to video games, unless they are Virtual Valerie or whatever.

It becomes a question of "Is it censorship if the artist doesn't put it in" for whatever reason. Game designers and other creators make their decisions based on their own reasons. Sure, it could be for wanting to appeal to the mainstream. Is that, in and of itself, really so bad? Is it less "pure" than something includes it and says "damn the consequences"? Some say "yes", others "no" but in the end it is up to the creators of the subject to decide how they want to express their design.
I don't think you can call this censorship. You might be able to say "self-censorship," but only if the developers REALLY REALLY wanted to and didn't. There's been nothing to suggest that this is the case, at least, not that I know of.
The arguement about whether or not it should have been in there is a purely subjective arguement that each person has to decide on for themselves. Me, personally, I don't care. Those with the PC version will soon have to make their own decisions when the Mod comes out, as well. Whether or not to add it, I mean.

No, they're little invincible annoying bastards in Fable 2. Your only option is to kill their parents and hope that gets rid of them

I believe Graphics are the Great equalizer. Killing a tiny sprite that looks vaugely like a kid in a green t-shirt is different then killing a fully realistic 3d model with gibs.
Although I used to make the pick-pockets melt with my plasma rifle.

This arguement, right here, makes more sense. And I will admit, that it does remove some manner of the immersion if certain people/NPCs in the game are Bullet-Proof.
That being stated...frankly, I don't want some of my random gunplay to mow down a kid. It would bother me a little bit and would probably remove me from the game even more than a bullet-proof shield surrounding all kids.
Wait, it comes with a manditory bloatware installation? I don't want any windows live crap installing/autolaunching on my machine. Can you opt out?
Why the hell would you need Live anyway? It's a freaking single player game.
For achievements. Duh.
I agree, it's unnecessary.
I'm honestly fine with the service, it's free now for the PC multi, and if nothing else I'll have a Live account now for whenever I finally get a 360.
Also: just picked up the game; installing now.
I got the guide, since I really regretted never picking up Oblivion's. Not so much because I got stuck or anything, just because I enjoy reading about my games.
So I do have a question, Im planning on picking this up through trading in an old 360 I have as Ive had it for years and havent used it since I got the elite, now, the 360 has a problem with the disc tray, when I pick open, it clicks but wont open unless I tap the silver tray thing, then it comes out, if theres a disc inside, it opens FINE, but when nothing is inside, it does this weird shit and I have no clue how to fix it, what Im getting at is, they take 50 dollars off your console if theres a problem with it, and for something so easily fixed, a simple tap, that pisses me off a lot, anyone know any ways to fix this or am I just boned?

I'd say if your warrantee (sp, always spell that wrong) is still active through microsoft, see if you can get it repaired. Hell, see how much they would charge for that, might still manage to be under 50.
Not sure about Microsoft, but I know that Nintendo's repair prices are reasonable most of the time.
Sony I think is the company bad about customer service I.I.R.C.
So, can someone tell me how well the 3rd-person view works? Any reasons I wouldn't be able to play through the whole game 3rd person?
From the demos online released last week it looks like you have a little cross-hair where your guns points, so unlike Morrowind and Oblivion you can actually see where you are swinging.
The only problem is if the game is anything like Oblivion and Morrowind the animations are terrible and you don't even want to see that shit anyways.
Well I've got a lot to do today. I've got my one history class that I have to leave for in about 40 minutes, an $80 book I need to pick up for Art History, a bus to take to pick up the game, and I need to call my insurance company to get some stuff figured out. And play Fallout 3.
The game auto-saves when you enter the final room, and you can't get out, so if you don't have an independent save, you get to start over if you want to go exploring again.

Speaking of getting Fallout 3 I was surprised to learn that my store actually had it today. We are usually notorious for getting games days late. Made it all the more difficult to walk out this morning without a copy in my hand.

I wish. The book I have to pick up is for the online class I just started and there are some questions and a short essay due tomorrow that I'll probably work on tonight. And I sure want to make sure the insurance company figures some things out so I don't have to pay even more medical bills.

The 3rd person view still makes your character look like his running through clouds but it does come in handy when youre sneaking around since you can move the camera to look around corners. But if your sneak sucks, keep the game in first person and save yourself the horror.

That's lame. My computer is slow enough without that UI running constantly, and autolaunching.
Does anyone know if you can chose to not install Live? Or is it required? I seriously don't need that shit.

Well, apparently the player model looks like shit, so...
edit: crashes even if I boot with no drivers, etc loaded... and I acted all sick today to play

If you enter the final room, the game autosaves and you can't exit.
When you go into the "final room" of F3 you can't leave.
So save often or something.
