The Law and Archival copy?

So I recently won a GIT Corp Marvel Civil War DVD-ROM which contains 199 comics on it, and was discontinued by Marvel in 2008. So, it's rare, and I actually want to make an archival copy so my rare disc is out of harm's way. Do I still have that right? I know I used to, but I've been out of the loop on this stuff for a long time.
If so, does it matter if I do DVD+R or DVD-R?

Do it anyway. As long as you're not making the copy to give to someone else or to sell, what's the big deal? It's not as though Marvel has people looking in your window to call the cops if you make a backup of your disc.

You may send a copy to me of that full DVD and I will keep it in safe place for you.

Hear my warnings, unbelievers. We have raised altars in this land so that we may sacrifice you to our gods. There is no hope in opposing the inevitable. Put down your arms, unbelievers, and bow before the forces of Chaos!

Man, do it. I don't even know the law surrounding it, but should you ever be in a position where any legal authority is searching your house for archival copies of your DVDs, you've got bigger problems.

Should be legal, no different then making a backup for a cd. Aslong as you dont give it away or sell it your pretty much in the clear.

If there is copy protection you can't directly circumvent it per the DMCA. However, that clause is generally untested in court and seems to contradict jurisprudence regarding copyrights and fair use, so it may not hold up in court. It would not be legal at this very second in time, though.

Thanks for the counsel! I don't think there's copyright protection, just "print" protection if I print out the comic, it comes out with watermark. It's really just a DVD full of PDFs of the comics. I'll burn my archival copy today!

It always bothers me when these threads don't cite to an actual statute or case law.

    Copyright Act, § 117:
    http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#117
    (a) Making of Additional Copy or Adaptation by Owner of Copy. — Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106, it is not an infringement for the owner of a copy of a computer program to make or authorize the making of another copy or adaptation of that computer program provided:

    (1) that such a new copy or adaptation is created as an essential step in the utilization of the computer program in conjunction with a machine and that it is used in no other manner, or

    (2) that such new copy or adaptation is for archival purposes only and that all archival copies are destroyed in the event that continued possession of the computer program should cease to be rightful.
