griefers - let me rephrase my query

While playing Insurgency on the Steam network, a certain character named 'unconnected' appeared, began team killing in spawn, while playing british 80's pop songs that prevented any communication via the mics.

We couldn't mute him because his name DID NOT APPEAR on the player list. After muting everyone - which I am loath to do because I don't want to offend anyone in the community unless they offend me first - the music continued to play.

How is this character by-passing the character list and the mute commands?

My only hypothesis is it was the server admin.

    Best course of action, find a password protected server. Otherwise, its bound to happen..In insurgency the grief is magnified due to the delayed respawning in waves and near instant kill weaponry.

    This is Half-Life 2, correct? Next time you might be able to go into console and type "voice_enable 0" to turn off all voice chat. Set it to "1" to turn it back on. I have to do that to play Counter-Strike for more than 3 seconds without putting my fist through the monitor.

    I've found that a large number of servers don't ever have admins on and thus there's nothing you can do about it. Maybe I've just been playing on the wrong servers. :D

    Also, I'm not talking about the mod, I mean HL2:DM or CS:S or some other non-Source game.

    Very few people Grief well. It's funnier when it's limited to silly hlss sounds and funny soundboard conversations, team killing pretty much takes the fun right out of it.

    Grief well? Eh? Funny ventrilo text to speech phrases... odd soundboard conversations... your mom jokes... these can all be done without qualifying as 'griefing'. I don't think anyone can 'Grief Well'... but many many people can spoil the fun of a group of other people by being a douchebag.
