So! Dead Space is out and it's scary as fuck. You play as some poor bastard named Isaac Clarke, sent to the USG Ishimura, a planet cracker, to find out what the fuck is going on since it stopped calling anyone. Not only are you going there because you are an engineer, but your girlfriend was on that ship and you got a weird video transmission before it went totally out.
So are you some bad-ass engineer like in Team Fortress?
No you're just some regular engineer with no real combat experience, you don't have any real strength besides from your awesome work out and a pretty tough suit.
Are you just fighting space-zombies?
Not at all! For reasons unknown, it seems an alien virus stemmed from a- yeah actually it's pretty much space zombies. But shooting them in the head doesn't cut it anymore?
You mean I shouldn't shoot them in the head?
Well you can! It just won't matter! You gotta cut off those limbs and totally tear them apart!
Is it just cheap scares and monster closets like doom 3?
Far from it. The music is dynamic and the sound design is fucking wonderful. The ship is constantly clanging and creaking and you never know if you are safe or in immediate danger.
Awesome! How long will this thing last?
About 10 hours, I know it's short. But you can't upgrade everything in just one playthrough!
Woah what upgrades? What the hell?
Yup, you can get new suits and weapons and upgrade them on benches using power nodes. It works pretty well.
Cool! I should try this game out!
Yes you should.

That is awesome.
It's quite strange, everyone that knows about it seems excited about it, but there doesn't seem to be an awful lot of hype behind it either.
Satans..... hints.....
But next week is Fable 2 and then Fallout 3, and those oughta take me a while
so maybe some time after that
I made a TD for iphone and windows phone!
defender, remember i was talking about how i wanted dead space to be good, because the design is exactly the way i think games should be designed?
well it works out, it is fantastic
it is like a more refined bioshock!
That's all you get because I feel that Dee Kae was being sarcastic.

fffffffffffuck you don't make me want this more
i, the resident non-asshole game design writer nerd, love this game. everything about it rules
i haven't finished it, though. so i hope it doesn't take a sudden turn for SHIT like bioshock did.
bioshock was more character-driven, though. this is definitely plot-based, like system shock was: turn on the engines, etc.
but I know that by the time I get it everyone will be bored with it
Promise me you'll talk with me about it, Orik
Nooooooooo. I really want to get this but lack the money too. Plus those six comics that show just what happened before the main character gets to the Isimura were nice.

really?
(medical lab spoilers)
i really like the pacing of this game, it's a nice mix of 'OH GOD' jump scares with 'JESUS CHRIST' disturbing stuff - it helps if you read the incidental text on the walls for that.
one really struck me - it was "dear lydia, if i don't make it, take care of the kids. love you, steven' handwritten above a dude's desk.
they did an awesome job with this game.
i was talking about bioshock a year and a half after it was released, and i still make text adventure threads
of course i'll talk about it with you

'i don't know. it didn't scare me as much as i would have liked.'
what the hell? do you have some sort of scareometer
'it's only up to fifteen gigashivers, i'm not impressed'
no, but having some kind of scare threshold is ludicrous
Well I mean the whole point of a horror game is that its supposed to scare you so I could see why people would be a bit disappointed that it didn't scare them as much as they thought it would.
here is my 'scare flowchart'
Am I scared? -> Yes. -> You're scared.
`-> No. -> You're not scared.
dependent variable: am I an idiot?
the result: an exponential increase over time
Well maybe its not the level of scared you are but actually how many times you were scared in the game. You could think a game wasn't as scary as you thought it was if you weren't scared as many times as you thought you would be in the game
