I just did some testing. 64bit XP doesn't want to install AT ALL via Boot Camp for some reason. 64bit Vista was noticeably better than 32bit (I have 4 gigs of RAM), but XP Pro 32bit was by FAR the best, performance-wise. I'm talking about a difference between 20fps vs 45fps in Fallout 3.

As far as I know, Handbrake accurately places markers in iPod touch (not too sure about other stuff) for chapter breaks. I suppose you could set up a queue of each episode as a separate item, thereby netting yourself several files (one for each episode) wherein each one has the proper chapter breaks.

Tell me if I'm not being clear.

Yeah I guess I'm going to have to just do each episode as a new file, I was kind of hoping to avoid this but I'm not sure if what I want is possible right now

Ah, it's worth every penny. It recently went open source, however, and the free, open source version is called FilmRedux: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=584869 -- There are links on that page to the source and a compiled build.

There's also iSquint, which is VisualHub's free "little brother" application.

here's the deal - the best converter for dealing with MKV's specifically is MKVtools

    google it

the problem is that the OSX element it (and every other program) uses to mux the resultant MP4 and AAC files will crash for any file larger than 2 gigs

    otherwise you're good to go

    Actually I tried MKVtools.

    Really confused now though.

The MP4s it creates says that a file is missing when I open it with Quicktime and I can't bring them into Itunes, but then it works fine with VLC.

I'll give filmredux a spin though.

Edit: oh wait, nevermind, figured it out... I think.

Just got to encode in h. 264.

Running Wall-E through MacTheRipper so I can put it onto my PSP and iPod Touch.

    Here's hoping it works.

Arg. It ripped but the audio is super out of sync with the video.

MactheRipper rips it fine, but it spits out a .VOB file that plays great in VLC but Handbrake doesn't recognize.

    I can't win either way.

Unless someone knows of a .VOB to iPod converter?

Edit: Or if I can get a Windows recommendation for a DVD ripper that I can use the get the Video_TS file from the DVD so I can drop that into Handbrake.

Handbrake works great so I hate to get away from it, but I need to rip the DVD first.

    Hi guys/gals,

I'm pretty sure this is the right place to ask this, but I usually only post in the AC, so if this is not the right thread, I apologize. Anyways:

So my wife has an iMac that didn't come with a wireless card, and I've been trying to get it to connect wirelessly. I bought a USB wireless attachment but it doesn't work very well. It doesn't stay connected and it's generally just a piece of junk. What are my other options here? Install a wireless card? I couldn't find an official wireless USB attachment for Macs. Any help would be hot. Thanks!

If it works at all, it may just be that the device itself is a little iffy. OS X doesn't have a lot of wireless device drivers, so your device gets as far as being recognized, my thought is that you should be good to go. Do you have a PC to test it with to see if the dongle may be having some of its own problems? You may just need to exchange it.

Well, what I mean is ripping the DVDs contents to the computer, then dropping that into Handbrake. It's the same files, just on the computer rather than straight from the DVD.

Also, can anyone ever get Handbrake to work with the PSP? There's a preset in there but it always shows up as "unrecognized data" on the PSP.

Use MtR with "Full Disk Extraction", no options other than the defaults, and point handbrake at the entire Video_TS folder when it's done. It works for me.

maximum, maybe you're not naming the file correctly/putting it in the wrong directory

There seem to be like eight different methods of putting video on a PSP, and all of them contradict one another. I fucking hate it, I can never seem to get the damn videos to play.

My Macbook came with two attachments for the brick. One was just the power prongs (which I assume you have now) but the other was a much longer cable that ended in a standard power connector. Did they stop including that at some point (or alternatively, did they not used to do that)?

I honestly cannot find a single place other than ebay to buy the official Apple extension plug. It came with my computer. However, if you don't mind the slightly ugly look, any figure 8 power cord will fit in there.

I'm dumb. I've had my laptop for a little over a year and the entire time I thought that cord was for "foreign wall outlets" (and the other end is a standard wall plug-in...). So, what about the different W (wattage?) on the other power adapters? Do they just make the laptop charge faster? What do I do to charge my laptop in foreign countries (say, when I study abroad in London next year)?

If you have a MacBook, which uses a 60W adaptor, then plugging in a MacBook Pro's 85W adaptor will work fine, and will indeed charge the battery quicker. Conversely, plugging in a 60W adaptor into an MBP will charge it significantly slower.

When you're abroad, you'll need to have the World Travel Adapter Kit (http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8794G/B?fnode=MTY1NDEwMQ&mco=MjE0ODI3MQ) which has plug attachments for most foreign sockets.

There is one caveat, which is that UK power supplies are 230V @ 50Hz, whereas US supplies are 110V @ 60Hz. Look on your adaptor, and it should state the voltage it will accept - mine, for instance, is 100-240V, 50-60Hz. If yours is only one voltage, then you'll have to buy a replacement.

If you use the 60W adaptor on the Macbook Pro, don't plug it in, remove the battery, and then play a game. Just... don't. Bad things can happen.

All of Apple's power adaptors have capable of running worldwide for a while now. I'm almost certain anything with the interchangeable plug design will work anywhere. The "100-240V, 50-60Hz" label is a definite sign though.

I just tried Parallels 4 with TF2 and I got between 15-90 FPS with an average of 30. It was for the most part playable with occasionally spurts of major lag (like 2-3 sec freeze/sputtering, I wonder why). It was unfortunately hardware DX 8 with software dx9 so the awesome tf2 "glow" and facial animations were not there.

I was playing both at 800x600 and fullscreen at 1440x900, didn't seem to be much of a difference either way.

I tried to play L4d. It loaded the video then went to the main screen but the main screen was all black. You could select stuff (hear it) but not do anything. If you pressed Shift + Enter a Steam interface would come up with friends list.

Has anyone tried Fusion 2 with L4D? How did that work?

A bit of a bummer but still impressive. I think it may be on par with Crossover.

As long as you don't do anything stupid. I replaced quite a few fried logic boards (at worst) and burnt out fans (at best) and SMCFanControl was a common thread. Just be careful, and pay attention. If you suddenly notice your fan hasn't come on all afternoon and you've been playing games all day... STOP NOW.

That said, it's a great utility.

Disables keyboard volume controls but that's the only side effect I've found. On the plus side, you get the fully featured driver instead of the stripped thing Apple gives you. Sound filters and settings ahoy.

I don't know. It might roll back the drivers on you.

It's not like boot camp updates happen all that frequently. There hasn't been a single one since I got my Macbook Pro 8 months ago. That's part of the problem.

Disregard that, there was one and I never got it. I've got custom video and sound drivers. Getting bootcamp 2.1. I'll let you know if anything goes awry.

Keep in mind, Boot Camp is just a set of drivers for your Mac hardware. Installing third party (first party?) drivers from the manufacturer wouldn't have any adverse effect, unless they're the wrong drivers. Likewise, installing a Boot Camp update won't bork anything, and at worst will just replace your 'custom' drivers with the Apple-approved ones.
