I actually changed my keyboard shortcuts to that ⌘+Space actually brought up QS instead of Spotlight.
Anyway, I liked that Quicksilver let me set up global hotkeys. So like in my post above I could hit a specific shortcut in any app and lock my session. There are some pretty neat plugins for it, one of my favorites was the screen capture plugin. I could do ⌘+Space+CAPT and select from Capture Window, Capture Area, Capture Full Screen (or similar language) and get a quick capture of whatever. I know there are built-in keys for capturing the screen, but I liked the interfaces in QS better. There's actually a lot of neat stuff you can do, you just almost have to know what it's capable of doing up front. I had trouble just messing around and finding some cool features.
Is there a possibility you could send me this icon? I'd love to attempt to pretty it up a bit.
oh sure thing. i was thinking of tweaking it later, putting it in a circle with a white background, adding black lines or something, but i would love to see what you come up with
this has the .png i used, and the icon itself LINK
i have been thinking of making a superman icon too, that isn't overdone like the one i have
i want one in nice flats to match my other dock icons
do you guys have any awesome icons you have downloaded? i love finding new awesome icons, i am big on taking a theme for my mac all reaching. (all my icons, wallpaper, screensaver and my adium all done up)
about quicksilver links-
thanks guys
also the screencap thing sounds neat, but skitch has stolen my heart and will never let go where screen caps are concerned.
i will give it another try i think though for other stuff
I'm in the process of updating all the software, but when I'm done with that I'd like to install Windows via Boot Camp. I'm not sure if I want to go with XP Home or Vista Ultimate 64. Right now I have on 2 gigs of RAM, but I anticipate upgrading to 4 in the future and it'd be nice to use an OS that supports that. I've never dealt with Vista before, though, and XP Home has suited me well for years. Hmm...
I'm thinking I'll set aside 20GB for the install. That's enough for a few always installed games and a slot for games I'll uninstall/switch out for others. I'm considering Slipstreaming the XP CD so that I have the maximum space available, but that might not be worth my time. Has anyone tried it?
i slipstreamed my copy . fairly painless though you need a windows machine to do it
there are a couple good tutorials on it. you need sp2 for installation via bootcamp

Sorry, I didn't really mean slipstream, I meant using a program like nLite to minimize the install size.
Will I be able to install nVidia's latest drivers for my card (8600M GT 512MB), or do I need to stick with the default Boot Camp drivers? Are there any other drivers I can update from the manufacturer?
Hmmm.
So, I have a 1st Gen MBP... I use it quite extensively - I make lots of home movies, use photoshop for my photography etc. I also bootcamp for a couple of games... Company of Heroes etc. I'm having a hard time running Dawn of War 2, and once again - my mind turns to upgrading to the latest MBP.
Can anyone tell me if the 9600M GT is any good? Someone on another board was saying that the card cant use the full 512MB that you can possibly get. But I'm also interested to get a perspective on how much faster it'll be than my current poor little X1600
Will it be OK for gaming?
Is there a chart I can look at to see it compared to all the other cards they've had in the MBP's? (So I can put it in context of my old card)

I have a MBP that has a 8600M GT in it and it plays Oblivion, Fallout 3 etc very nicely. So I think the newer 9600M GT will run your games mucho betterino.
Also, the person on the other board is getting his laptops mixed up. The Macbook Pro doesn't use an integrated graphics chip but a discrete graphics chip with its own memory. On the Macbook range it uses an integrated graphics chip that uses some of the system memory for graphics whilst on the MBP the graphics chip has its own memory. Though I think the newer Macbooks now use a discrete chip with its own memory rather than sharing with system ram.

Even though I contend that the Unibody Macbook is the greatest Mac ever made, I still think the eMac is my favourite Mac ever made. There's just something about it - it's so practical yet so beautiful at the same time. And it's actually pretty powerful, considering the age, target market and price. I'd own one again in a heartbeat if I had a use for it.

I have a 1st gen unibody Macbook 2,4 GHz (if the 0.4 Ghz do matter, I think they don't) with a Geforce 9300 (?) and it runs HL 2 episode 2 with 2x anti aliasing, every detail setting set to "high". It shouldn't have any trouble with TF2.
BTW, I don't know if this is fixed yet - if you have stuttering sound in Vista / XP you need to disable a wireless driver setting (search for 802.11a networks) and install the latest drivers for the trackpad. This setting and the broken touchpad / keyboard driver introduce lots of latency which results in stuttering. You can find the setting for wireless driver in the device manager - select the driver for the wireless card and right click + chose "properties".
I use Butler for custom searches (like for classes by their section, folders by an abbreviation, and picture folders by "camera"). I absolutely love it. Otherwise, I use Spotlight.
Also I've just started using Nightly Webkit over Firefox and the zippyness is overwhelming. It's just so...Mac integrated, maybe it's worth finally checking out. Time to get AdBlocker and Inquisitor. Any recommendations for a new Webkit(Safari) user?
And can anyone tell me an easy way to access my bookmarks (in folders) via the keyboard? Right now I'm CMD+L to the address bar and then tabbing to the folders...
Bizarre request but can anybody point me to some games that are like the Spore space stage but more detailed?
But still relaxed. I want to play to relax and experiment (what happens if I strip this planet's atmosphere rather than fight for it properly etc) rather than get my shit ruined buy the Arsetearer Empire.
And it needs to be Mac native, or at least compatible (being pretty would be nice too)
So like, I have two directories that I'd like to compare. The contents are like 95% identical, but I need to account for that 5% discrepancy and know exactly what files are different on both directories. Does this type of comparison software exist? (for mac or windows, ideally mac?)

If you don't mind the idea of getting nitty-gritty with a command line, this functionality is built into OS X using Unix shell commands.
Open up Terminal, and type the following (sans quotes):
"ls DIR1 > file1.txt && ls DIR2 > file2.txt && diff file1.txt file2.txt"
Replacing DIR1 with the first directory and DIR2 with the second. It should spit out at you a list of items that appear in only one directory (ones that have a < are only in the first directory, > for the second).

So I have a directory I wish to protect. In theory someone could just sneak onto my desktop when I'm away and easily delete multi-million dollar files in an instant. How do I secure a directory in OS X?

You back it up, log out of your work station when you are not around, and encrypt it using GnuPG, preferably with a cipher that isn't trivial to crack (which is why I recommend AES).

Okie doke. If you've got any ideas you can't quite get onto the screen, let me know and I'll give it a shot.

All mine for $500 bucks because my buddy wrecked his car and needs money fast to fix it.
Score!

Ha, whoops. He told me 22, but I see now that it's a 20.
Still, for the past four years my desktop has been an eMac, so this is a HUGE upgrade. I can't stop playing with it.
this emac is so ooooold
I loved my eMac and I still do. I wish I had something creative to do with it.

Might it be this one?
edit: oh wait, that's not really anything like QS. I just remembered seeing Google blog something about "Launcher" without really reading it. :P
Make sure boot camp is fully up to date, then install away.

Y... yes?
I love my iMac, but need a new laptop for Uni this year, and ive only stayed with windows laptops for a bit of gaming here and there, namely TF2.
Run Win 7 - 64bit.
Fairly well, from what I've heard/read.
Got 4GB of ram?

In fact my contract is up in June anyway...moar awesome
So once i get out of bootcamp i am going to reward myself with a Macbook Pro and later, a mac mini.
my question is, can i upgrade the HD in my mac mini or am i stuck with it?
