How good is Dead Space? I'll be getting Fable 2 the same day, which is also shaping up to be incredible.
I was addicted enough to finish it in only two sittings...granted it only took me 12 hours but I mean, the first day I played for around 4 hours and the next I just couldnt stop...its very very fun, and well worth the games I traded in to get it. I also just happen to lvoe scary games so that helps but even so, this game just fucking kicks ass.

So I can jump on the asteroid, walk outside and plant the beacon in vacuum -- but how do I get back in?
WOW
omg I didnt even realize I couldve just planted it outside...I just jumped at the corner, planted it as fast as I could, and jumped right the fuck off of it before being crushed. (Like I was the first time). And to get back in you just have to simply walk back through the gap into the station again, same way you got out...Just..ya know...watch out for the big ol spinny death things.

How the fuck am I supposed to survive the onslaught (two Explodeys, a Pregnant, two Slashers; could be even more) after I restore gravity in the Processing room on sub-deck B?
I think I remember where you're talking about. The bridge to get from where you turned on the gravity to where you're going is along the wall, to the right? What I did was ran to the middle of the bridge/catwalk, directly under the energy/gravity beam. You should have plenty of time to cut down enemies before they get to you, in many cases.
Some general tips:
Lately I've taken to cutting off a leg on a slicer before attacking the arms. Pretty easy clipping an arm as they lie motionless for the second or two after losing a leg.
Also, killing the...sappers? with the force gun doesn't detonate his arm, which can be useful.
Ill give a nice tip...upgrade the plasma cutter to the maximum and watch the rape that shall ensue, seriously, that gun maxed out is just disgusting.

It's sweet polished awesome. Really. Think Alien/Aliens/The Thing/Event Horizon crammed into a RE4-style game. The game is freaking gorgeous and detailed and the audio is pretty damn good. Also, holographic menus are awesome.

Yeah, I'm thinking about tackling Insanity mode with the unlocked Level 6 suit, and cheating with the codes I posted earlier to upgrade the Cutter to UBER.

You can't change the difficulty on a New Game+. As far as I can tell, if you want to tackle the hardest difficulty, it will be on a fresh game.

But won't the unlocks for beating the game at all still be there in a plain new game?
EDIT: Huh...went to start a new game and there were only Easy, Normal, and Hard difficulties. I don't get it. Couldn't choose a different difficulty when I loaded up my first game's complete file, now this.
It also may just plain help, Medium was hard enough man, Impossible without at least an upgraded suit to start off could be just damn near...well...Impossible as the difficulty implies.

I must agree with you. With Fable 2, Fallout 3, and Gears 2 coming out within a three week time frame I wasnt sure if spending the money on this game was going to be a good idea, after having played it however, fuck that, this game was worth every penny.

Is Aliens (medium) and The Thing/Alien (Hard) a good comparison
Hard is definitely a different game. Much more tense. I'm finding myself using melee to just knock them away and then run for it (not much ammo).

When I bought this game, I thought I'd enjoy it as I love the genre, but it would tide me over until Fable 2 and Fallout 3. Today, I'm gonna have a hard time not placing it as my GOTY unless those other two games or Persona 4 does something really amazing.
Hard is hard, but not unmanageable. I'm killing everything I run across, but I have yet to feel like a badass. I think this is because on Hard mode, every individual enemy is a threat.

Yes, thats exactly how I thought of it as well, a nice thing to hold me over, but damn...now I just dont know, if Fable 2 is anything like Fable but with enhancements then I have to give this GOTY, its such a great game, of course theres still Fallout 3...Im not sure, this is tough but i love the hell out of this game, and am quite happy I decided to buy it, Im sure Fable 2 and Fallout 3 and...well, Gears 2 will be great and all but..I dont know if theyll give me the same experience I had with this.
I feel a bit cheated after playing SH Homecoming with what Ive just seen here, they could easily have done better in SH, and I hope they do. I was MUCH more scared playing Dead Space than Silent Hill, and I love that in a game. I know this game seems to be not at all scary to some and then (like me) super fucking "OHSHIT!" scary, but even without the jumps, the atmosphere and just...I dont know, I love a whole lot about this game, it was really cool, and come on, Zero-Gravity Basketball, you cant deny that shit.

I must have screwed up during the new game+...unless my game's just borked.
Like I said, I couldn't figure out how to change the difficulty (since I'm now not so sure it wasn't possible), and "Impossible" didn't show up in New Game. wtf, my brothers.

I beat the game on medium last night and I'm playing it again on hard but none of the stuff I unlocked is there so I doubt it.
So is this a buy, a rent, or a buy when it's cheaper? Basically, is it good entertainment value?

Oh bit more info for those of you going for PC, you're going to want to turn the sensitivity way up and turn the vsync off, they tell me for some reason vsync just makes the game feel off.
Just loaded up my original game save file, then quit, THEN hit up New Game and Impossible showed up. Same story as when I tried Hard, though. Starting off with no weapons and the level 1 suit.

New game + only works on the same difficulty level.
So it has been since the dawn of new game +.
That's why it's new game + and not not harder difficulty +.
I think the first time I go through this it will have to be on Hard. There is something about a horror game that makes it legitimately frightening the first time you play it, and I want that first experience to be as gut-wrenchingly terrifying as possible.
Impossible is only available via unlock, right?

Many games let you change the difficulty level. Some even on the fly.

Yea, Impossible is unlocked by beating the game on hard.
And FYI: Hard mode IS hard. I can only imagine how painful Impossible will be

Correct.
I don't regret making my first playthrough on Hard. From what I understand, it's a much better experience.

That's what I hoped for. It's one thing to face some zombified-blender-man with the Moonraper 3000 whilst tripping over ammunition, but having to face the same monster with only a sock puppet and your recently soiled trousers makes for an ultimately more enjoyable gaming experience.
EDIT: And also, you beat that balls-hard platformer. I'm sure this thing was cake compared to that.

Yeah, I'm doing my first playthrough on hard. The only thing I'm having difficulty with is figuring out which weapons I'm going to use in different contexts, but I'll get it in time. I'm usually used to:
Pistol - Speed, but weak firepower
Shotgun - Strong hits and wide spread, but rare ammo, low clip size, and slow operation
Rifle - Long distance
Explosive - Boom
I know that there are some equivalents in this game, but a rotary saw? I'm just going to have to try them all I guess.

I love the concept of the Ripper, but I only ever used it once, in Zero-G, and it was terrible
I should give it another chance in regular combat situations but I've grown attached to my Cutter/Line/Rifle setup, and I can't really afford to buy it back at this point

That is one of Dead Space's stronger points (and it has many). The weapons are more unique and their usage is quite a bit more varied than most other shooters.
God I love the Ripper. Its main attributes are low ammo usage and being able to keep sustained fire on multiple targets. It's pretty useless beyond 5-6 meters (you can use the Alt-fire to launch a saw blade at the Necromorphs, but it's not overly effective). It's honestly my favorite gun in the game so far, and one of the best weapons for taking out the standard Slashers.
The threat of dying from a gameplay mechanic point of view is much more worrying than from a thematic point of view.
yes, the necromorphs have big knife arms and teeth and shit. But if they only do 1D6 damage and you have 9000 hit points they cease being scary and wind up being creepy.
When they have thematic threat and gameplay threat that is when they are scary. Which from what I hear is Hard Mode.

So far I've found that ignoring the green boxes is a pretty effective way to turn the experience into more of a Survival Horror, in much the same way that ignoring crates in RE4 does. I foresee self-appointed playthroughs of this style in my future.
