Man, I just beat it, and what a fantastic ride. I can't wait for Dead Space 2. I'm all numb now.

I think the scariest part was
right at the bloody end. You're in the shuttle, moving away from everything. It's quiet, it's peaceful, your job is done. Isaac takes off his helmet and breathes a sigh of relief. THEN THAT FUCKING SCARY FACE JUMPS AT YOU THE END AWWW!

Beat it last night. End of game spoilers, as well as speculation about earlier posts on this thread.
About Isaac's wife, what my wife and I came up with was that she was actually a necromorph, and the Hivemind telepathy made her look like her old self to Isaac. This explains how she was able to interact with the computer, etc. She may have also been the monster that jumps out at Isaac in the ending(which would explain why she's on the ship.

Also, I really liked the game, but I got a big Flood vibe out of the enemies, particularly the Hive Mind.

Something else that occurred to me - how does the hallucination-Nicole access the console in chapter 7 to get you to the beacon? Can the marker access electronics without being wired into them, as suggested by the monitors throughout the game with Nicole on them, the radio message from Nicole early in the game, and the door opening.

It could also be a trust build-up for the marker to be able to persuade you later in the game. However, the blockout of Kendra's communications with you during that portion of chapter 7 seems to suggest the former.

Then again, why can't you see Kyne's wife, while he can? Do the hallucinations reinforce the marker's meddling in the computer systems, or are they simply hallucinations to persuade you? Nicole's info must have been in the Ishimura's computer systems, which would explain the marker knowing about her - is it intelligent enough to draw the connections between Isaac and Nicole based on computer records (ie, of her sending the message to Isaac)?

The evidence is there, but the HOW isn't. Weird stuff. o_O
I'm really not sure about the console stuff myself. Either it was all just an illusion and the door was really open the whole time, or the image of Nicole really was interacting with the computer somehow to unlock the door.

The fact that several waves of necromorphs show up and focus on Nicole would seem to indicate the latter, though not necessarily.

As for how the marker knew to use Nicole to communicate with Isaac, I got the impression that it seemed to be able to see inside the target person's mind, and give them visions of someone they care about, maybe the person they most want to see. Kyne with his wife, Isaac with his wife, and even Kendra with her brother, though she proved cynical enough to simply ignore that one. (Also, several people in the prequel comic saw visions of their own dead loved ones.)

I wanted to think that it was actually Kendra hacking the console. Nicole was a medical specialist. Kendra is a computer specialist. I think Isaac was just hallucinating.

    Flame Thrower or Pulse Rifle.

I suggest Pulse Rifle because the Flame Thrower doesn't work in a vacuum... and it's exceedingly weak, unfortunately.

Depends on the difficulty. On higher settings I would focus in 1 gun mainly and only carry 1 or 2 weapons.

On my impossible play through I had full cutter, full HP buffs, and 75% Line gun - Nothing else. With the New Game + bonus and another run through you can probably have 2.5 more guns fully upgraded.

If your doing Medium: you will find that ammo tends to stack up because you're not having to waste as much on guys that take less damage. You can pawn off much of it for credits to buy lots of nodes, allowing for maxing out of more items.

    For Imp Run:
On my Impossible run, I focused on 1 gun at first, and at the same time worked on upping my life [rig]. Then when I came across the 2nd gun I was going to max, I started working both of them. To be most efficient it's best to roll with 2 guns. Between having to buy some ammo, buying some nodes, and the nodes you find, in this run you will only find enough to really max out about 2 guns, your rig and stasis (which really helps in Imp for freezing lots of guys and just running past to prevent wasting ammo).

I don't think it was Kendra because she claims to have lost contact with Isaac during the time period in which that happens. Most likely Isaac is just hallucinating that the door is locked and likewise hallucinating that Nicole show up out of nowhere. Unlike other living people you see, Nicole just appears, completely unharmed, in an area with plenty of necros. Everyone else you see that isn't behind a barrier of some kind is either dead or dying except in a couple specific cases.

    my end game specs
Nicole's dead. Hive mind told nothing to jump her to make her into a mutant necromorph. So she's just a human necromorph. And that's who's helping you through the missions. Nicole's dead, it's the hive mind that's controling her body. Which is why when the hive mind dies, she's all psycho feral necromorph at the ending.

Alternatively, the hive mind makes sure you're hallucinating nicole when it's actually random necromoprhs working the controls and helping out at those times.

but that latter guess contradicts the ending.

She's dead. She'll have been one of the many necromorphs seen through the game, but the Nicole you've seen has been a hallucination. The thing in the ship at the end? I would bet heavily that that's also a hallucination now that Isaac knows she's dead

was pretty awesome, also used the contact gun for the first time and my god it's a beast. The plasma cutter is still my favourite weapon, even with my pulse rifle fully upgraded I find the cutter takes down enemies easier.

The plot seems pretty obvious to be honest, it's not doing much I havent seen before unless there's a super triple twist near the end or something.

It's worth doing once just to see.
Basically, he drags you along to the very end, and struggles to pull you through the hole while you grab on the sides. He lets go and you're free. Isaac starts to stand back up, dusting himself off, when the fucker pops back out, grabs you by the head, and pulls you in quickly, probably breaking your back the way he sucks you in.

The final boss had a similar mechanic with a likewise equally awesome scene involved.

EDIT: Oh Jesus, I had to watch that ZP just to see what, just what could've been wrong with Dead Space for Yahtzee. I never watch ZP otherwise, and I'm glad I can go back to ignoring him.

He didn't actually play the game. He couldn't have. I'm not even joking. His point about pseudo-dead enemies that keep popping back up? I counted two enemies that did that. Only two. Pacing was spot on. Ugh, I don't even want to rewatch it to argue against it further, it was so bad.

I actually got it by accident in Chapter 9. As far as I can tell, enemies randomly walking over them counts towards the trophy.

Otherwise, I'd use the Force Gun.

I think he has different definitions of "cheap attacks" than I do. As long as you're halfway paying attention, you can pretty much always avoid getting attacked by those swarms. Normal necros can be a split-second away from landing a hit, but as long as you shoot them first you can stun them out of it and escape harm. Yeah, the actual enemies you fight get somewhat repetitive, but the things you have to do to get through the game beat the hell out of any other survival horror that comes to mind.

Dead Space is a game that isn't designed to punish you for letting something get within ten feet of you, but instead rewards you for thinking quickly in combat and keeping a cool head. The only thing that I felt was similar to System Shock 2 was where the necros came from, but that's where the similarity ends. And how can someone complain about how the enemies show up when they don't show up in ways that almost guarantee getting hurt? It's leagues better than having enemies magically spawn behind you a la Doom 3.

The flickering lights complaint is pretty stupid. When you first get to the ship, the lights are generally fine. As the game progresses, all the systems continue to deteriorate. The necros don't really need the lights anyway and nobody is around to fix anything, so of course the lighting systems will be damaged. A cavernous mining ship isn't going to have floodlights everywhere; it would be a waste of money.

All I know for sure is that normally I hate survival-horror games for all the reasons Yahtzee attributes to Dead Space (and which it doesn't have, for the most part) and I wonder if he played the same game the rest of us did. This was an intensely top-notch game.

You watch him the entire time, yet he doesn't react to anything save an undead space zombie attempting to remove his limbs in alphabetical order. Plus, I remember a distinct number of people here saying that the plot can be guessed and gleaned a lightyear away, that it doesn't do anything new plotwise.

He didn't rip it to pieces in my opinion. He did bring up his issues with it, as he does with every game. I found it an amusing slice of someone else's opinion on this game.
