Pistol - Speed, but weak firepower
Shotgun - Strong hits and wide spread, but rare ammo, low clip size, and slow operation
    Rifle - Long distance
    Explosive - Boom.

    Closest Equivalents:

    Pistol - Plasma Cutter
Shotgun - Ripper (Saw), Force Gun, Line Gun
Rifle - Plasma Cutter, Pulse Rifle
Explosive - Contact Gun, Line gun (Alt-Fire Timed Bomb), Fusion Torch (sort of)

The contact laser is definitley the games equivalent to a rocket launcher. Its got low ammo, long pauses between shots and blows the shit out of whatever gets hit.

Plus low ammo availability and high ammo cost (it's like 2,000 credits per round)

It's also absolutely brilliant for use against
    The Leviathan's Arms
    in Chapter 6

Dead Space is a third-person shooter/survival horror game, released on October 14th on 360/PS3, and the 20th on PC. It is rated M for Mature.

    Random Stuff:

The 360 gets the "Elite" and the PS3 gets the "Obsidian". Both are Level 5 uniforms with maximum inventory, 10% more protection, and 90s air supplies for zero-g. The 360 suit is WHITE and GREEN, the PS3 is BLACK and BLUE. PC version seems to get jack shit.

A third person shooter? so you like control people that do the shooting for you? What was wrong with first person shooters? what's next, a second person shooter? we get to play as a guy getting shot?

What about fourth person shooter's? we can be a guy that tells another guy to tell his people to shoot someone? sound good?

And what's up with the 360 getting the one called "elite" it seems like someone is playing some favoritism with that 360.. What's wrong with the PS3? not good enough? The fucker has like 8 Processors!

The first and third refer to the camera position.

third person means the camera shows the person you are controlling, first person means the camera is the person you are controlling.

Yeah, I'm doing my first playthrough on hard. The only thing I'm having difficulty with is figuring out which weapons I'm going to use in different contexts, but I'll get it in time. I'm usually used to:

Pistol - Speed, but weak firepower
Shotgun - Strong hits and wide spread, but rare ammo, low clip size, and slow operation
    Rifle - Long distance
    Explosive - Boom

I know that there are some equivalents in this game, but a rotary saw? I'm just going to have to try them all I guess.
That is one of Dead Space's stronger points (and it has many). The weapons are more unique and their usage is quite a bit more varied than most other shooters.

God I love the Ripper. Its main attributes are low ammo usage and being able to keep sustained fire on multiple targets. It's pretty useless beyond 5-6 meters (you can use the Alt-fire to launch a saw blade at the Necromorphs, but it's not overly effective). It's honestly my favorite gun in the game so far, and one of the best weapons for taking out the standard Slashers.

    Hi5

The ripper is great for conserving ammo, I can kill most enemies with a single blade, and it's a lot easier to slice of many limbs at once with it. You don't have to aim carefully, just run the blade all over them.

Ironically, despite the ripper having good ammo conservation they keep piling on the ammo for it instead of guns that actually need it.

I'm doing my hard mode run, and thus far (not using the Obsidion suit) it's just-hard-enough. I'm nearly always scraping for health, and every encounter is exciting - every enemy is potentially lethal. (I'm also going for the Use-Only-The-Cutter achievement - and so far everything is cool). But I have a fear...

When I was going through my Normal run mode, there was a certain enemy I never figured out the 'strategy'. For. Like, with the first type of enemy a good strat is to shoot out one leg to slow them down, then take out one claw to finish the job. With a powered up cutter this takes 2 shots - clean, quick and efficient.

But the enemy I never figured out... (late game spoiler)
The tall, thin one who breaks into a bunch of tiny ones when killed. Not the pregnant one, the tall skinny one. Where the fuck do you shoot him so he'll just die and not become 7 little ammo-sucking speed-jumpers?

    Thanks for any help!

It is. It's a joke post.
But really, favoritism for the 360? Let's hope this is innocent ignorance. Did you know know about The 360 Elite? It's a model for the 360. You know, a version of the released console. It's not favoritism, just cognizance. Recognition.

I found that the force cannon was quite good about cleaning those guys up but if you're trying to stick to the cutter than you could try using stasis just as they begin to scatter. If that doesn't work I don't know what will.

So...I'm just getting to Chapter 3 (working 6 days a week sucks). So far, the only things to successfully creep me out are the
    Winged fuckers that reanimate corpses

The rest is more tense than anything else, though occasionally I'll have an "OH SHIT" moment when I'm facing 2 or 3 necromorphs. I absolutely love the atmosphere though, and the environment itself continues to amaze me. I just wish I had more time to play.

What I do is just normally dismember the dude, then (being extra cautious for spoilers):
use the flamethrower for the leftovers. Maybe inefficient, but it works for me since I only use the flamethrower for the little small bugs that get on your back, so I've got tons of ammo in the reserve.

I'd just like to say once more that the force gun is fucking awesome. The cutter gets all kinds of love but the force gun kills most enemies faster and in fewer shots (and it can hit multiple enemies at once). The only time I don't use the force gun is when I'm up against the exploding guys. Don't get me wrong, the cutter's great, but it's no force gun.

Is a harder difficulty mode unlocked when you beat the game? I'm usually a total pussy at these types of games, I've never actually beat another survival horror type game on hard. But for some reason the hard mode in dead space feels just right to me. You die enough that you get to see a lot of the cool death scenes, but not so much (usually) that it gets too frustrating.

I agree with what someone said earlier about saving your nodes for the locked rooms. The health, ammo and money they supply has kept me alive a lot longer than a couple more damage points or hit points probably would have.

Does anyone use the alternate fires on most of the guns? I only ever find myself using it on the cutter to cut the tentacles off the little guys. Haven't really found a good use for any of the other weapons yet.

Once I entered a room with like four or five dead bodies in it.
At this point, I'm sure those little flying buggers will show up to infect them
So I use kinesis to pile all the bodies into a corner and fire the Line gun's mine into them. Shoom! Itty bitty bits, not fit to infect.

Man, you guys tear through games quick.

I just completed chapter 1 on medium. Had enough credits for the level 2 RIG (surprisingly cool looking for the first upgrade) and used a power node to upgrade the plasma cutters damage. Have another node, a couple of thousand more credits and a bunch of health packs. Am I doing alright, or did I miss a ton of stuff? I'm always paranoid that I missed to much stuff...

Amazing game thus far. I played a bit of Chapter 2 before being sliced in half at the waist by a group of enemies. Figured that was enough for the evening :)
