but there was no real psychological horror to the game at all,

Agreed.

No psychological horror? Man, every time I heard a piece of pipe falling to the ground I'd always try to figure out where it came from. It drove me crazy. I mean, pipes don't just fall off ledges all on their own, right? Even though a falling pipe was never an indicator for a monster attack, it always made me think something else was around.
I also felt like the ship could have used some more color to it, but for the most part it really was pretty neat. The engine bay in particular was well-done. But at the end of the day, the ship was supposed to be essentially a civilian vessel, so you would think there would be some more decoration up than inspirational company posters. The warning signs all over the more dangerous operating area of the ship were a great touch, though. They really enforced the feeling that under normal circumstances, this place you're walking into should have a bunch of people in it, but now it's just you and the necros.

You have to remember that every horror game he'll ever review will be compared to Silent Hill Two, and thus will be judged harshly.
I don't know, maybe I'm just made of sterner stuff these days, but creaky pipes don't really do it for me. I'm in a spaceship full of nasty zombie men, and you expect a creaky pipe to make me jump? Especially when they creak in every single section that has pipes.
Disembodied whispering is always a good idea, but they weren't anything too chilling in Dead Space. Well, maybe they were the first time. Because I'm playing an armed and armored robot man to whom I have less empathetic connection than the Brave Little Toaster, and because whispers don't have much on tentacle-rape zombie babies, they lose a lot of punch.
That pretty much goes for all of the subtler attempts Dead Space makes. Lack of empathy for the main character, constant repetition, and general unoriginality saps them until they're just background noise to the well crafted hallway shooter action.
Edit: @Ninja Snarl
Did you really jump after the fifth and sixth pipe drop? I wish the game pulled me in that much.
So...I finished this game in two sittings over one day. I was shocked to find that I only jump at a few of the scares in the game. It was odd. Usually a good scary game leaves me paranoid while walking around the house at night. FEAR did this to me...Extraction Point did this even better. But oddly enough I didn't get this "scare-gasm" that it was supposed to deliver. Maybe I'm just really jaded in this respect. ='(
Otherwise this game was all kinds of fun. The atmosphere and graphics were exceptional. The "Unitology" thing made me feel like I was chasing after Tom Cruise's legacy though. The necromorphs eventually became the same kind of annoying that imps and upside-down-faced spiders in Doom 3 did for me. I really liked that the game made you sever parts of the body to effectively kill them rather than running around and mowing things down with a hail of bullets or popping off head shots around every corner. I also like that you had to respond to some enemies tactically like the short fat ones that spill tiny necromorphs out if you shoot them the wrong way while taking out their arms and legs. The entire story, environment (especially the vacuum parts, nicely done), and playstyle was good from start to finish. I'm just really disappointed that I didn't get the scare I expected.
Maybe that 3rd person over the shoulder crap skewed my immersion...
Oh well 9.5/10 =P.
Edit: Y'know...I may have been playing on easy come to think of it. Hrm....time to play through again on normal...maybe HARD. *whimper*

Chapter 9 spoilers:
The coolest moment in the game for me was when Isaac is leaving the Valor as it was exploding in the cargo bay. That in itself is not particularly spectacular, but the fact it was a vacuum environment and you could only see or perhaps feel but not hear the Valor exploding as you hurried to the airlock.

I'm on board with the edited comment, why would he mentally block it out like a crazy person before going anywhere near the marker? Besides the crew mates WATCHED him watch the video a hundred times, I think they would have noticed the ending even if he happened to be blocking it out.
Oh and on the facepalm thing, yes epic, somebody needs to make a gif of it for awesome forum facepalm moments.
I am just going to say again that the real horror of this game comes from never being safe, and knowing that anything can happen, without a clue where it will.

so far im only a few hours into the game, but from what ive seen o far i casnt agree. this game has no psychological horror whatsoever, you know exactly what can happen, at all times.
That being said, its fun, but i consider it to be an action game through and through and nothing more then that, similar to resident evil 4.

Don't try to tell me Dead Space gets judged harshly because SH2 is the measuring stick. I love all things Silent Hill, and return to SH2 just about every year. Dead Space was still a supremely competent horror game that I will gladly replay. In fact, I think the best comparisons were to the Silent Hill series. I hoped that every door I came up to was locked, because that meant there wouldn't be anything behind it--a la Silent Hill. :P
I found Dead Space to be a genuinely scary game myself. And that was just after playing Silent Hill Homecoming. I actually found it scarier than SHH so...yeah...theres a LOT of different opinions on this game eh? Either way atleast none of them are "THIS GAME IS SHIT"

Your problem is that you keep calling it a review.
It is not a review.
It is a satirical look at the game with heavy leanings to the bitter side.
How many times do I have to hit this fucker? I think I dropped 15 line cutter bombs inside of his mouth and it's still not dying.
oh. my. god.
that fight took me twenty minutes. fully upgraded plasma cutter and all. I used every explosive and even started hitting it with the little bits of shrapnel. I'm down to the pulse rifle. One burst left. My ammo counter hits 0. The thing finally explodes.

I only did that my first play through. I did realize that
You can hold the explodables in front of you and let the things it spits at you hit it without taking damage.
Honestly what the shit. The controls for shooting the asteroids were so shitty, and the asteroids themselves were so unforgiving. Maybe I'm just horrible at that section but it took me like 3 or 4 times to hold them off long enough.
OH god this asteroid shooting part is so annoying, i keep losing all hull integrity. If the bloody turret would move faster so i could aim properly this wouldnt be nearly as bad.
I am just going to say again that the real horror of this game comes from never being safe, and knowing that anything can happen, without a clue where it will.

I just finished this game. I loved it. The atmosphere was fantastic...not the scariest game out there, but definitely had me on edge most of the time. Getting attacked in places where you think you're not going to, or in places where you'd normally be safe in other games really helps keep you in the mood.:winky:
The music triggering is fantastic, though my favorite part is when it just has the crescendo-ing (if that's a word) violin trill.
They really should have named this game Murphy's Law: InSpaaaaaaaaaace!
The asteroid shooting stuff wasn't *that* bad. Took three tries. Could have happily done without it, but not as horrendous as some found it. Off to figure out what's poisoning the ship...
I played the game on Hard, and it was intense for the first chapter or two...
...but I dunno, maybe I'm just too old now, but I eventually got over it and fear just turned into caution. There wasn't much psychological about the horror to me, and I knew pretty much that (on Hard at least) any encounter usually ended with me either in pieces or mostly destroying the enemies. And I died so much that the fear of dying really lost any effect.
I still can't play Silent Hill games...I think I have a problem with darkness in video games. Dark places really get me going, and this game really isn't all that dark. If only they played with obscured movement and real psychological tension more, this would have been me the entire game:
No, really, I am completely unable to get past the poison pods in Chapter Six. I'm experiencing a bug with the final poison pod- the model is gone from the map. I can see the poison cloud he's wheezing, but the model is gone, and shooting in that spot doesn't do shit.
Here, look (spoilering for those who haven't gotten here yet):
That trail of breadcrumbs ends in nothing, and the YouTube videos I've seen have a poison sack guy in that exact place.
I reloaded my game after letting myself die, and he still wasn't there. I exited the game and restarted, and he still wasn't there. I shudder to think how far back I'll have to go to fix it given my low ammo count, and (adding to the the audio popping and skipping I had before I turned off the advanced graphics effects like universal bloom and blurring, which are just unnecessary anyway) I'm about to just sell the disc on Ebay, recoup my losses, and buy something I don't have to playtest for the developer before i can enjoy it.
This 'bug' ruined my night. Seriously. And it might have ruined my entire game.
And I was just getting the hang of balancing two guns only, instead of as many as I could carry.

I hoped that every door I came up to was locked, because that meant there wouldn't be anything behind it--a la Silent Hill. :P
That's true, but if we're judging games as a whole, Dead Space isn't even in the same league as Silent Hill 2. It's not even nearly as good as 3, but then again SH2 and 3 are IMO the pinnacle of the survival horror genre and Dead Space is definently still up there with Resident Evil. SH2 is just such a unique game that it's really hard for anything to compare to, that's why I don't compare it to anything. It's up there on the pedastal that every other survival horror game, as good as they are, still looks up to.
Also Silent Hill 3 has the single most frightening/disturbing moment in any video game ever made, Dead Space had great atmosphere but no truly shockingly heart stoppingly terrifying moments. At it's best, Dead Space made you feel completely hopeless and alone, as if it's just a matter of time before you're dead.
