The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I've been playing a lot valkyria chronicles (the demo) and the game ranks you on your performance. The best I've been able to do is "A". However, there is - apparently - the opportunity for an "S" rank. Many hours have been wasted in the attempt, to no avail. And it pisses me off.
So, this thread is about silly side objectives which, while not essential to the story (and sometimes actually having no effect on anything but the graphic) have a pressing desire to be done, at least for some. And are damn hard. Nothing pansy, I'm talking god damn near perfect reflexes or near prefect runs.
Games in this category:
Viewtiful Joe - top rank
FFIX - Excalibur 2 run
HL2:E2 - the gnome run
etc. etc.
Some of these are harder than others. Any examples of others, and story of completion?
Note: I'm not talking about super-grind sessions to achieve the goal, i.e Dark Aeons FFX. I'm talking just damn hard stuff no matter how much you've played.
Wing Commander 1, Kurasawa mission 2, aka "Save the Ralari". You don't have to beat it to get the good ending, but if you lose your captain gives you an earful of snide condescension. Jerk. Would it kill the developers to identify the hard missions, and write sympathetic losing debriefs accordingly?
....oh, you said "silly side objective". Okay then, chaining in Ikaruga.
:P
Realistically, F-Zero GX's story mode. Sure, there's a bunch of extra racers to be used, but you can still make a kick-ass custom car without it.
Also, Mario Golf Advance Tour's Elf's Short Course. One-on one-putt for what I'm guessing is a full 18 holes, and if you screw up just once, you're forced to start over. What's even tougher is that the hole placement and wind direction/strength changes every time you try to get through it.
-the first time you play DMC3. Somewhere between the first miniboss and Cerberus, you will (a) give up or (b) really, really want to give up because this game sucks and no one should be expected to do this.
-also, God Hand.
-the secret tunnels in Bionic Commando: Rearmed. Seriously, fuck those tunnels.

I lack the skill and reflexes to accomplish probably any of the stuff mentioned, but what I do have is patience. Lots of patience. Just recently I managed a perfect 2000 in the horseback archery minigame in OoT. With the N64 analog controller.
See, I have a cut-off. I call it the pain in the ass rule. If it's a pain in the ass? Whatever, I'll still go for it if I'm having a good time. Like accomplishing every objective in a playthrough of C&C3. Hardly impossible, but in a number of missions it can be a pain in the ass.
But things like gold staring every song in Guitar Hero/Rockband on expert? Or getting S rank on every level in DMC3?
Fuck that. That's not a pain in the ass. It's a god damned obession. :P
The Chocobo 0.0 run you had to do to get a piece of Tidus' Ultimate Weapon drove me bonkers.
Also, the damn dodging lightning thing to get Lulu's Ultimate Weapon. Some things are just not worth it.
Lulu was easier if you did it in a completely dark room - I think I got my hyperactive 10 year old sister to do the Chocobo run for me though. All of the ultiate weapons in FFX were pretty insane.

I don't think those belong on this list. Although while the lightning thing wasn't exactly hard it was just so god damn frustrating. The worst thing was that generally the more you dodged the more you grew bored and the more boring it got the more relaxed you became and hey what do you know back at fucking one.

I just don't have the focus for that, ultimately. After about the 20th or so lightning strike I'd lose my focus and mess up.
The others I didn't find so hard. I was obsessed with blitzball so that one came naturally.

Being colorblind, there was no way in hell I could do the butterfly one.

frustrating.
Also, wasn't there no counter, and if you went to the guy to check how many you dodged, it reset the counter?

Did it? It's been forever since I played that game but I don't think that it did.
I actually read a FAQ on FFX ultimate weapons, laughed and never even tried. It just felt like Square was trying to say "We double doggy dare you, asshole"
Honestly maybe i'm fucking nuts but I recall getting Caldabog practically on accident. Which in turn pretty much broke the game because Tidus became absolutely amazing.
The arrow minigame in Phantom Hourglass. Targets move on the top screen, and you fire by pointing in the general direction on the bottom screen. You can get every single target hit without missing once, and still not get the required score. :x
Dunno if it's just me, but Call of Duty 2 on Veteran had some insane moments that I just couldn't beat at all, no matter how hard I tried.
The one level in the British campaign where you're manning the turret on a armoured car I would just fail when you round the corner and there's a tank sitting there, along with some guys with Panzershreks on the roof. Either I would destroy the tank, but couldn't move fast enough to hit the guys before they fired the Panzershreks, or I would kill them, but the tank would shoot me. That sucked.
Then there was the first mission in the American campaign, where you have to run past a quad AA gun that's shooting above a trench (you have to dive into the trench.) No matter what I did I would always get hit once by the gun, which insta-killed on Veteran. Smoke grenade, nope. Kill the gunners, nope, more would run up and immediately start firing.
Had to turn down the difficulty just to get past those small tiny bits
EDIT: Oh wait, side-objectives. Sorry, these are main objectives... Although I guess trying to beat it on Veteran in the first place was a side objective for me :P

I haven't even read the rest of the thread yet, but this Mario Golf Advance post made me scream "OH FUCK YES!" when I read it. That damn thing is damn near impossible. I maxed out my character and finished every other challenge in that game, but that one eludes me to this day.
Not much of a gamer myself, but I wanted to peel someones skin off when I got to Meat Circus in Psychonauts.
I very much am a gamer and still had the same reaction.

Are you talking about a godhand run.
Cos all you have to do is go in there with dragon kick (two god reels) and a full god meter, godhand the silver to half health then dragon kick him into the milky way.
Then gold is no more difficult than any other thug, easy to take solo.
Of course that requires luck but eventually you'll get enough reels.
Morninglord on
(PSN: Morninglord) (Steam: Morninglord) (WiiU: Morninglord22) I like to record and toss up a lot of random gaming videos here.
1. The speedrun of The Facility you had to do in Goldeneye to get the invincibility cheat. You had to be fast, perfectly lethal, and fucking Doak had to be in the right place.
2. The "Where Do The Batteries Go?" challenge in TimeSplitters 2. That drove me insane. I never recovered.

i beat every other level
every other one
I was just about to say that. Those things can go eat a dick.
FUCK YOU, GUY!
Most impossible optional boss ever.
Holy crap hard!
I never asked for this!
Seriously, what the fuck.
Oh, you mean objectives in games themselves.
Some of the arenas for cash in god hand were just nuts. It was better to bet on the chihuahua races, if you knew which ones were good.

@gamefacts - Totally and utterly true gaming facts on the regular!
I don't think I will ever beat Silver and Gold without cleared mode health.
I'm too random, I always get hit at some point and you have such a tiny lifebar.
I'm too weak and made of flesh.
