Can I just pick a few pokeymans and expect to do good, or should I *really* plan out my guys, hand them all different items, breed them from lvl 1, and generally be meticulous? I mean, to win.
It depends on what few pokemon you pick. I think the a good way to strike a balance between the two is pick 2-4 pokemon that you really want on your team because you like them, then build a team around them.
For example, I love me some Aggron and Camerupt. They go on the team. Holy shit I have serious Ground and Water weakness. So I add Slowbro and Jumpluff. I could go for some kind of sweeper pokemon, Pinsir resist Ground and Fighting, so I choose him. I don't really have anything that can take special hits, so I choose Kanga for my last pokemon. There is one of my teams.
If you're going for the competitive edge but don't want to spend a whole fuckload of time preparing pokemon I would EV train shit and work to get that good moveset. Skip breeding for IVs. It's so fucking luck based that you have limited control over it. That's what I plan on doing.
Yeah, that must be it. Definitely not because I love pink. Nope.
Oh heavens, no. You know what pink means. YOU KNOW.
Funny story, I was in a store the other day and a father was buying a Nintendo DS for his son.
They were standing in front of the full display with all three colors available and the dad turns to the son (who was maybe 7) and says "So, would you like the black or the white?"

You've gotta make a man out of 'em eventually. Better to start young.

Well, I'm once again hooked on Pokemon. I'm getting the fever all over again, and while it's reminding me of 7th grade, it's a happy time.
And in getting back into the series, I've read a bit, and I believe I'm going to buy a GBA gameshark in order to get a ticket to Faraway Island in Pokemon Emerald, in order to capture Mew.
If I successfully capture Mew, and trade it to my copy of FireRed, will I successfully be able to import Mew into Diamond, once I pick that up? I'd love to have a legit Mew (even though I'd have to hack in order to get the ticket for the island).
I seem to remember a problem with hacked tickets not actually working and people would end up just hacking to the island itself. I can't remember. It should work though for D/P transfer since the Mew itself will be legit, just not the way you got to it. You should do the same for Deoxys as well since I'm pretty sure nintendo will never give us another event for him.
Oh, man, I have tried SO HARD to get a Mew. I have a hack that does it in Ruby/Sapphire but you can't trade him to Emerald or later. I have hacks that get him in ForeRed/LeafGreen but he'll never listen to you. The ticket hacks don't work either because you need some event to happen before they'll work. The ONLY thing that may work is the teleport trick; you can zip to any area and then you can catch him and Deoxys; I've teleported to the islands but my pokeymans aren't strong enough to catch him yet. But I'm willing to bet that neither will listen to you unless you use the tickets to get there.

anyone got an idea how to get him then?
The only official way is to be at one of those stupid Nintendo tours and get the tickets.

Which, IMHO, is functionally retarded. People like me who live in bumblefuck nowhere don't get access to these events. That's the only reason I've been wary about getting back into Pokemon, my collector's spirit will forever be unfulfilled.

i have a gameshark, is there a way to get to the island and not have using it fuck with pearl. I mean, i could just use it to get mew some other way, but i don't want to. I want to use the tickets.
Oh hey you know what, I just remembered I DO have Mew. I completely forgot about how I got him because it wasn't a huge event like Celebi or anything. They just gave him away at Toys R Us. When D/P come out, I'd be happy to trade him real quick so people can get him registered in their Pokedex's, as long as they give Mew back right afterwards. I only have like 2 Mews so I can't really spare him. Sorry.

There's almost assuredly no way to do it. The best way is to wait and see if someone makes a hack for Pearl that will let you get him.

If you're just talking about beating the Elite 4, you can literally throw together just about any 6 Pokemans, level a few of them up, and blow through the Elite 4 as long as you remember the strengths/weaknesses chart.
I played through Emerald yesterday, from the start to becoming champion, and I used random Pokemon, with no regard to building the "uber" team. I just slapped whatever HM was needed at the time on whatever Pokemon could learn it.
My Hall of Fame consists of:
Electrode lvl 51 (evolved from a Voltorb I picked up when getting the Master Ball)
Gyarados lvl 48 (evolved from Magicarp that I got when I first got the crappy rod and became a HM critter)
Ninjask lvl 51 (evolved from Nincada that I just happened to catch)
Gardevoir lvl 49 (evolved from Ralts. I actually tried to get this guy since I'm a psychic whore)
Pelipper lvl 29 (needed a critter that could Fly)
Zigzagoon lvl 14 (HM critter that I always had in my party since the beginning because he can pick up Ultra Balls after fights, even at the start)
It's a crappy ass team, filled with low-tier Pokemon with crappy HM moves, and is in no way even close to being a "competitive" multiplayer team, but for the single player, they (more specifically, Gardevoir, Gyarados, and Electrode) wiped out the Elite 4, who had much higher level Pokemon.
Strategy makes or breaks any team, but when just trying to beat the game, you could win with 6 of anything if you just level them up enough, or have a couple of critters that complement each other (like a Swords Dancing Baton Passing Ninjask and a Gyarados with Strength or a Calm Minded Gardevoir and a shitload of Hyper Potions).
Don't don't don't try to use any Pokemans that you went through the game with to play against another human. The EVs will be screwy, it'll have crappy moves, and it won't work well in a "competitive" environment.
Beat the game, then go back and collect the Pokemon you want to battle with, and train them correctly if you're wanting to play other humans.
On a completely different topic, what's the deal with Gamesharked/PARed Pokemon? I thought they got through that whole "hacked Pokemans can't be traded to the console game" once the games went to the GBA and Gamecube.

They did with everything after Ruby/Sapphire. There were a few hacks that worked for R/S but you can't trade them from R/S to anything other then R/S.

So, we'll be able to trade our Emerald critters to the DS versions, or have to wait a week after release until someone puts up a complete Pokedex list of critter codes?
Hell, I'll start catching lvl 1 Mewtwos in Emerald right now.
To get Mew and have the tickets to work I believe you need two codes. One to give you the ticket or whatever and another to 'unlock' the island. I've done it before although I can't remember which device it works on or what the codes are.

You should be able to just pop in any of the GBA games and then release those pokeymans into the Safari Zone equivalent. That's how they're doing it I believe. Any hacked pokeymans won't transfer at all.

They have those for the PAR but they've never worked for me. Usually they corrupt my game completely.

Sleep Powder and Explosion are good fourth moves. That is a pretty solid set, especially from someone who doesn't like strategy. I'm on to you sir.

Red and BLUE
Gold and SILVER
Ruby and SAPPHIRE
DIAMOND and Pearl.
You screwed up there, chief
But pearl is pink. And diamond is blue.
Red+white=pink
But silver is grey. And what about Fire Red and Leaf Green?
PHAIL
This just means that Nintendo finally realized which color deserves the first mention.
Green is half blue, and Silver is a natural complement to blue.
Listen I just pick the one that isn't red/reddish
Green is also half yellow, which is the redder color and actually gold is the complement to blue as it's closer to orange.
