Wow, I just started a new fort and it was dubbed "Drunkentown"

Neighbor to Funkytown, Drunkentown was a place of much fun and happiness. Unfortunately this happiness did not last, as one day, Drunkentown had no more drinks. On this day, the dorfs rebelled...
Many deaths were involved, of this I can assure you.
I assume the 'torture' in the thread title means the actual game. I refuse to believe that you (not limited to PAers of course) or anyone can decipher the meaning of this cryptic tablet. Prolific though this world may seem, I manage to find myself trapped in a wasteland devoid of anything more than menus and submenus.
I know...I'm doing it wrong. In the future, I shall try harder.
Has anyone made a mod that edits the number of megabeasts to be created on world gen. As it stands now, having only 15-25 seems terrible. How about 200 megabeasts formed at world gen. That'll make it more common to run into megabeasts.

It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

DF doesn't do well with multi-threading. If you devote one sole processor to it, it might do better, but as far as my 2.2 AMD X2 3800, it runs terribly. I use my partner's laptop with a Pentium 2.8 single core.

I'm using an X2 5200+, and it runs DF easily twice as fast as the P4 3.2 GHz I used to have - still maintaining 30-50 FPS with my current fort of about 100 dorfs and maybe 30-40 animals.
There's a mod* called Legendary lands or something like that on the Bay 12 forums.
Makes the game MUCH harder/ aka better. Dragons are to be feared. I think all it does is just tweak everything in the world gen and init files.

So anyone got any ideas about adventure mode besides trudging through vast regions? I did get to see a goat absolutely murder a small child. That was so funny it made me wish I could export the Announcements to a text file.

IIRC, the game does this automatically. I remember going through my DF folder and noticing the file, finding it quite humorous that my absolute first act in DF was punching an elf.
:edit: Yep, gamelog.txt in the base folder.

Probably nothing to do with cores, your processor is faster even when comparing single threaded performance.
Probably nothing to do with cores, your processor is faster even when comparing single threaded performance.
Yeah, that's probably the main reason.
I don't see anything on the DF wiki saying that the game will run slower on a dual-core just because it's a dual-core, just that it doesn't take advantage of both cores at once - might increase performance to set its affinity to one core and set all your resource-intensive stuff to the other.

You'll just need to add more megabeasts into the creature raws. There's one mod, older now I think, called appropriately, "More Megabeasts". Also, hang around the modding forum on Bay12games, there's a wealth of new creatures and megabeasts there, you just have to look.

Hmm. It would appear my metalsmith, èrith, is in bed with a head injury. Looking at various screens, I see he violated my mandate that an adamantine object be created. My newly appointed Captain of the Guard, apparently, decided to hit him upside the head. With a mace.
BTW, Deathwing, I've named your child "Deathwing II". Here's the baby's info:
He doesn't handle stress well. He prefers to be alone. He greatly appreciates art and natural beauty. He is completely uninterested in ideas and debates over intellectual issues. He is candid and sincere in dealings with others. He is immodest. He is occasionally given to procrastination. He needs alcohol to get through the working day and really wants a drink.
Might be a while before you do anything notable, since you're a baby.
EDIT: Hmm, you're completely covered in mud.
EDIT v2: Hmm, it would be kind of a dwarf to give you a drink... and feed you.
EDIT v3: Alas, poor Deathwing the Second, you have passed to the great fortress beyond. Despite being an adorable, cute, little baby, no one seemed interested in adopting nor helping you. You wandered about, hungry, thirsty and restless. Your passing was made only slightly easier by the kindness of jdarksun, who gave you a drink shortly before you starved to death. You have been buried beside your mother, Deathwing the First.
EDIT v4: Let me know if you want to pick another dwarf to name Deathwing the Third.
EDIT v4: Let me know if you want to pick another dwarf to name Deathwing the Third.
lol, sure, might as well....At this rate, soon my descendants will be unlucky enough to get eaten by dragons or something, so at least i'll provide entertainment :P
As mentioned in the previous post, Deathwing is dead again. I suppose I should have waited to see if the baby survived first, but I didn't. Oh well.
We have tons of food and plant material; so much farming goes on that plants are now rotting on the vine. I've asked the farmers to let the fields go fallow half the year. Between all the plants and rock and stockpiles that need to be moved, almost everyone is hauling and it's still not enough. I'm slowing down on some other projects under I can get some order with the hauling tasks.
The Captain of the Guard, Tekkud, punished the metalsmith èrith for not making an adamantine item like I requested. èrith is resting a head injury in his bedroom. I've asked Tekkud to be a little gentler with the punishments.
Zandracon was also injured for a short while, probably due to a sparring accident. But as soon as spring came around, he was up and about and back to sparring. Good show, dwarf. Vucar was also injured at some point during sparring, and is resting in the barracks.
I've not set up traps yet, though I have a plan. Part of that is that the first thing any invader or snatcher has to pass while entering the fort is the barracks. This was tested early on, when a snatcher ran right into a champion wrestler. There's now a red stain in the hallway near the barracks.
Rith is now a legendary Clothier after finishing a fey mood. The result: Gebfikod, "The Dented Glazes", a Pig tail face veil. $10,200. This is a Pig tail face veil. It is encircled with bands of Pig tail. It is made from Pig tail cloth. On the item is an image of a dwarf and dwarves in Flint. The dwarf is surrounded by the dwarves. On the item is an image of dwarves in moghopper bone. The dwarves are travelling.
The best bit was the first ambush. yotes was out and about with her baby, chopping down trees and collecting wood. Six goblins jumped her, but as legendary as she is, she easily circled around and outran them, getting back to the fort without a scratch.
As the goblins regrouped for the main attack, I brought out two melee squads (a mix of wresters, hammerdwarves and macedwarves) and a squad of marksdwarves. Only 2-3 in each squad, but many were champions or elites.
As the goblins are ready and approach the main gate, the dwarves set themselves up. A marksdwarf Erush fires a few bolts at them, not realizing that bolts do not pass through walls. As his attacks seem useless, Erush heads downstairs for a nap.
Finally, the battle begins. Champion Såkzul, carrying her second daughter, leaps into the thick of the goblins with the other dwarves two steps behind. She plows through them and continues running. Her tactic seems strange until I realize she's confused the goblins; some slowly turn to chase her.
With perfect timing, a few other dwarves jump in, hitting the confused goblins. Except for one who is just barely managing to keep up with Såkzul, the rest start taking injuries and losing limbs. The air is thick with crossbow bolts, some of which make their mark in goblin hide. One has lost a hand, another the arm from the shoulder down. As the fight continues, the gobs become stunned, go unconscious, and begin to die. Meanwhile, Såkzul has circled tightly round, and is leading the only uninjured goblin back into the thick of it.
Goblins begin dying, and soon, all but one is dead. The dwarf warriors suspected the goblin who lost an arm was a goner and ignored him, but he struggled through the pain and ran off south. Let him be a lesson to the goblin nation, that we do not fear them.
In the end, our dwarves were without injury... except one. Now Såzkul's actions are more (or, perhaps, less) clear. The moment was missed during the initial combat, but when Såzkul leapt ahead into the battle, one of the goblins spiked her baby daughter on a rusty iron pike. Perhaps Såzkul became frightened? Or was distraught? I checked with her about her daughter after the fight; Såzkul was ecstatic. She mourned the loss of her baby, but praised the child for her valor in battle. She has been buried with honor.
EDIT v4: Let me know if you want to pick another dwarf to name Deathwing the Third.

Okay, you are Logem Lînemcatten, Gem Setter (and novice cutter):
w00t. Hopefully I haven't died or gone stark raving mad again by the next time you post.
Meanwhile, in my fortress, i'm reasonably stable so far, if boring:
However, my Fortress Guard captain....not so much. He does seem to enjoy his work though:
Much like in my real life, my fortress is bursting at the seams with all manner of random materials and quasi-useless junk, so I haven't had a problem with any insane artisans yet.

Udib Rig•thlokum, Child has been struck down.
Be well, èrith.
EDIT v4: Let me know if you want to pick another dwarf to name Deathwing the Third.
lol, sure, might as well....At this rate, soon my descendants will be unlucky enough to get eaten by dragons or something, so at least i'll provide entertainment
Any particular job?
Okay, you are Logem Lînemcatten, Gem Setter (and novice cutter):
Yeah, aside from the standard "needs alcohol", that's it. She's a simple gal, apparently.

Also, that video is pure win, SoaL
