Woot. Another influx of migrants... the Dungeon Master, 24 other dwarves, and one cow calf.
Mason/engraver, woodcutter, carpenter, furnace operator, potash maker, tanner, leatherworker, weaver, clothier, bone carver, wrestler, siege engineer, five peasants, four children (?), and three dyers (???).
I'll probably keep the mason/engraver, siege engineer, and wrestler as they are. I don't think there's anyone else here who I'm in need of as they are. The rest will all become haulers and/or military.
Congratulations, yotes and Pmoney; you have a new baby daughter: Melbil "Cloudrims" Luntirist. Actually, you also have a son, Bim "Lockchamber" Thakmafol; I don't think I'd noticed him before.
Also, Deathwing, your third incarnation just went into a possessed mood. Looks like you're carving a pretty ruby.
EDIT: Yup, Deathwing III has completed her work, a perfect ruby she calls Ulingrìthar Ozor Govos, "Crazetrammeled the Subtlety of Leaves",
$96,000. It is a perfect Ruby encircled with bands of Ruby. Too bad it wasn't a fey mood...
Had my first siege come....and go. My band of sparring-crazed champions slaughtered the goblin group in about 10 seconds - including one that got tossed about 10 square to slam into a table in the dining room and die :P

First siege here as well... 5 goblin swordmen and 11 goblin wrestlers. I activated my squads, at which point a few of them decided it was time to fill their waterskins. I switched the water zone, but a few already were on their way out there and I couldn't stop them. Three were headed right for the goblins, while the rest of my troops waited back near the main gate.
One got water and headed back; the other two didn't get to the water before the goblins came in range. One marksdwarf, Mafol, and a fresh recruit. As the one starts shooting, I realize that he may take one or two goblins out, but then they're gonna get swarmed; so I called all the troops over.
The recruit took a few minor injuries and ran, pulling maybe one goblin away from Mafol, while the rest went in to kill him. They start hitting him when the rest of the troops come running up. The goblins, seeing several champions, elites and two more marksdwarves, start running in fear.
Two champions, SÃ¥kzul (whose child was lost in the previous ambush) and Kikrost were there first and starting ripping off heads. I think SÃ¥kzul wanted revenge for her child... Zandracon and a few others were close by, but didn't get there before the others either killed the gobs, or the gobs escaped. (This happened near the map's edge.) Sorry, no kills for you Zandracon. Out of the 16 goblins, I think about 10 perished. A few minor injuries on my side healed (just scratches); the only serious injury was a wound to Mafol's leg; he is expected to recover in time.
During the battle, which ended up away from the main gates, some kobold thief thought he'd sneak in the fort. Too bad he ran into about three other warriors coming up from below. And then the other kobold who, after the battle was over and the warriors were resting in the barracks, decided to walk INTO the barracks. The look on the kobold's face was priceless.
Aside from Mafol with the leg wound, everyone else who was wounded is back up again. Only minor exception is the Captain of the Guard who must have taken a serious hit to the chest from a mace during sparring. His broken ribs and torn flesh was healed, but he's always wheezing now. Looks like one of his lungs collapsed or was pierced.
What else... I've finally found the magma... or at least warm stone, so it's within reach. Need to be careful digging.
So with 5 months coming up with nothing better to do during a third period computer class, Im going to do my best to learn Dwarf Fortress again. This is going to be bloody. I hope.
So my dwarves will not move the 5 copper crossbows from the now dismantled wagon to the appropriate stockpile. I looked at the x-bows to see if the needed to be reclaimed and they didnt, so what else can I do?
Congratulations, yotes and Pmoney; you have a new baby daughter: Melbil "Cloudrims" Luntirist. Actually, you also have a son, Bim "Lockchamber" Thakmafol; I don't think I'd noticed him before.
We're a quiverfull kinda family. I probably should get drafted as a macedorf at some point.
Craaaaaap. I suddenly have the will to get back into this... But i think the fact i played years ago may impede me. Building above ground is crazy talk.
I know i cant really be helped unless i immerse myself in this newfangled dorfortress, but is there any tips that have become standard practice i should probably be aware of?

A good place to start (in my opinion, anyway) would be reading some or all of the "Your first fortress" article on the DF wiki.
Gross, I had a miner get hurt in a cave in and become bed ridden. Well winter came along and the river froze so he couldn't get any water. Naturally he died from thirst but now my wood worker is sleeping in the same bed as his corpse.
Has anyone had a problem with migrants not knowing how to get to your fort and just milling about?
I've had problems somewhat like that twice.
First time, they could move, but had to pass by a goblin fort, and were too scared. I wasn't aware of bridges at the time (which would have let them over a chasm), so I turned them military and hoped they'd make it past. But I'm guessing this is not your problem.
The second time the first few migrants were heading toward the fort, but one just stopped at the edge of the map. Got stuck for some reason, no idea. Perhaps because he was military? I dunno. In any case, I finally got him to move by disabling his military status, un-paused, then re-enabled his military status. His brief stint as a peasant allowed him (and the dozen or so migrants behind) to continue on.
I've finally found the magma... or at least warm stone, so it's within reach. Need to be careful digging.
My solution is to, once I hit warm stone, find a tile 10 or so spaces in front of that first warm stone, then go straight up to the surface and start digging down from there until you hit it.
A magma pipe or pool that isn't visible from the surface will have one Z-layer of open space above the pipe, and if you tunnel down into that space, the entire pipe then becomes visible.

Yeah, that's basically what I started doing this afternoon; will probably hit it the next time I play, though it's slow as my framerate has dropped considerably with all the latest migrants.
Out of the four maps I've created I have never got Magma, I also really really suck at this but I haven't had any horrible stories I just start running out of food because my seeds don't seem to grow. I got everything underground though all my workshops and stock piles thats a start I suppose.

Use the site finder?
After map generation, when you start a new game and are moving about the map to pick a location, hit 'F' (if I recall, check menu at bottom of screen). You'll be able to say "I want flux, magma, river and no aquifer", or other combinations, and the game will try to find a site for you.

Hmmm. I think I might replace myself as mayor. I keep mandating that adamantine items be made. I like them so much, and when I don't get them, someone will be "punished" with a hammer.
Goblin siege incoming. I start activating my troops: 12 melee (6 champions, 6 norms; a mix of wrestlers, hammerers and macers) and 4 marksdwarves. There's also the Guard, but they'll only be useful if the gobs make it inside.
I look to see what size force we're facing.
48. 48 damned goblins.
26 goblin wrestlers
13 goblin hammermen
6 goblin macemen
one goblin elite crossbowman
one goblin pikemaster
one goblin mace lord
I need new pants. Thank the dwarven gods they only have one crossbow user. I may be able to lure them in through the front gate with my marksdwarves (and hopefully some of the visiting merchants' guards will join in), and then hit them behind the wall, right and left, with my two melee squads.
This is gonna get messy.
EDIT: Hmm, might be able to get some of them in chain quickly.
EDIT: Also, one of the champions recently gave birth to twins. She's carrying both of them around with her... I can't imagine how she'll fight the gobs, but I'm guessing she'll find a way.

Battle in progress. It's a freaking mess. Losses on both sides. Merchants are helping, as is a couple of the fortress guard. Will report in again soon. (Click image for larger view.)
EDIT: Såkzul died, leaving her two babies to crawl around on the ground. One is unhappy and unconscious, but unhurt. The other is miserable and bleeding heavily from an arm. Sorry little dwarflings.
No, those were mostly clean... almost all the action was right in the gate area. Their elite crossbowman did stand up on one of those hills and fire down into the mess, killing a couple quickly and doing plenty more damage.
Forty-eight goblins, screaming and running toward the open front door of your fortress, is an intimidating sight. Our garrison of about 16 dwarves (not counting the guard; didn't expect them to get involved) was certainly challenged. At best, that would be 3 goblins per dwarf... assuming none were drinking, or sleeping, or injured from the previous battle or sparring. A few were... But even at only 3 gobs per dwarf, three of them were elite or better, which made the odds worse.
It was hoped that the merchants had a guard with them that would help out. As they'd only recently arrived, no one had been out to discuss it with them, and no one could now with the command for all non-military to stay indoors. We could only hope that the merchant guard would join in.
We could see the goblins approaching from a distance; initially three equal groups, two of them joined up together, led by the pikemaster, to form a larger initial group (to be followed soon after by a smaller second group). Our plan was to put the marksdwarves near the depot with their war dogs -- including two more just assigned to them -- while the melee dwarves would wait inside the walls just on either side of the gate. When the gobs came running through, bolts would fly and the two melee squads would pinch them from both sides.
Nice plan, but who needs a plan when you've got bravado? As the gobs came close, Medtob runs out yelling, "KILL THE GREEN-SKINNED BASTARDS!!!" Medtob prompty got a pike through the throat and was killed instantly. The other dwarves, initially encouraged by Medtob's charge, had little time to recoil in fear, as the main host came among them.
Fortunately, the merchant guard did come to help... about 12 additional dwarves to our assistance. In seconds, it was just a messy melee in the middle of the main gate. We lost more. Såkzul found out she couldn't fight well carrying two babies, and she went down, bleeding profusely. (The babies are still alive, but dwarves are notorious for rejecting orphans. I fear they will not survive past winter.) Kulet was also struck down, while Mebzuth and Obok died from crossbow bolts, shot conveniently by their elite crossbowman on a nearby hill.
Blood and body parts everywhere. One of the merchant spearmen was down. Total carnage. We weren't alone, however, in taking damage. Dwarves _and_ goblins took damage and died. A quick survey showed that their pikemaster finally went down, as did three macemen and nine wrestlers.
Two of the fortress guard must have been close by and heard the sounds of battle; they came running up from below to join the melee.
Kikrost went wild and killed a couple before taking a crossbow bolt to the hand. He managed to avoid further bolts and scrambled back to safety, but for his courage he has been honored with a full name and title: Kikrost Thîkutebal Tholtigmamot Ator, "Kikrost Bookrevered the Barricaded Plait of Perfection".
At this point, some of the goblins began to fear for their life and started running, round the fortress' corner and heading south. Not sure how many... too many things going on to track, and the battle isn't over yet.
We're lucky in that we've seen no more dwarf deaths from our forces, though I believe the merchants may have lost more. A war dog died from severe injuries, choking on its own blood.
Zandracon came through and finished off one of the nearby goblins before it became apparent that the remainder of them were running to escape. One more died by the hand of a hammerer from the merchants (who was then subsequently injured by the macelord, also escaping).
The battle over, cleanup began. Sadly, Alåth Ducimkåtâk Akestlikot Libash (also honored with title, though its meaning is lost), one of our marksdwarves, bled to death from his numerous wounds. Also, we later had to put down one of the war dogs who was pitifully wailing and wandering the fortress, in great pain from lingering injuries. We will think of him as we eat dog burgers tonight.

You aren't overworking your dwarves??? SHAMEFUL!
LET THE BEATINGS COMMENCE!
Have you designated a meeting area?
Ha nevermind all my food went bad, sshhhiiiittt.
Barrels, barrels, barrels. Make sure you've defined enough room to store all of the barrelage, as well.

Just started a Glacier fortress... goddamn Ice mechanics...
So ANY water that you take to a level where ICE was, will form Ice instantly...
Great. Oh well, So much for THAT farm... Looks like I gotta deal with making the Farm on the same level as the 'aquifier'.
Gotta love da PEZ!

I run my desktop at 1280x1024, is there a way to make DF look exactly like it does when I run it at 640x300 with my desktop set to 1024x768?
it seems like it would be relatively simple if I knew what I was doing
