Did you ever play Soldiers: Heroes of World War II? I don't really care, but it has a sequel coming out that is like 10 times as good. It's called
Men of War and it's awesome.
WHAT IS MEN OF WARImages that follow seized without permission from the Internet at large
Men of War is a tactical World War II strategy game. There is no base or unit building. You get a set amount of points, and you buy units with those points. Then you use those units to blow the crap out of bad guys, or the environment, or friendly people on accident. It's kind of like Close Combat crossed with Commandos crossed with Company of Heroes. Anything that starts with a C is probably in this game, come to think of it. Unique features in Men of War:
- Every unit has an individual inventory and can pick up stuff like ammunition or guns from the ground
- Every VEHICLE has a unique inventory, letting you refuel and rearm enemy vehicles whose crew you have killed
- Every unit can be individually controlled with something called "direct control," which is tons of fun for something like a Tiger tank. You basically drive around and shoot people, or if it's a man you run around and shoot people. A little like a 3rd person shooter but slower and more tactical.
- The AI is ridiculously intelligent; you can order a squad to take cover behind a wall and they'll stay there and shoot at enemies from behind it, or you can tell them to hide in the bushes and they'll remain hidden until they ambush the unsuspecting enemies
- The game is quite realistic (although ranges have been scaled down to accomodate players). Why is it realistic? Well...
- Tank combat! The tank shells all fly in accurate trajectories and everything, but the real awesome part is the calculation of penetration, which takes into account angle, speed, and armor. You can not only blow up enemy tanks, but knock out the treads, shoot the turret or the barrel, or blow through the engine, or smash into the crew quarters and kill everyone inside.
- Infantry combat! Machineguns will mow down 20 enemy infantry in a few seconds, rifles will kill their targets in a shot or two, and a grenade can make meat out of men
- The terrain! Every building and object is 100% destructable. You can DRIVE a TANK through a HOUSE and CRUSH EVERYTHING. It's awesome.
- The game has a million units for three sides: US, Germany, and Russia. When the game comes out it will also have Japan.
Sounds like fun eh? Well if you want to get in on the action there's a free multiplayer beta going on right now! It's slightly buggy but I can attest that it is TONS of MEGAFUN. How do you get in? It's TONS of MEGAEASY.
Go to this thread on their forums and follow the instructions. When I signed up I got in later that day.
Now what?
Now you download the game! You can even do this now, but it won't work until you're in the beta.
This thread has everything you need. Once that's installed and everything you should go ahead and read
this stuff if you feel like learning how to play and all that good jazz. It's very informative!
More information please
Okay sure. The game is coming out November 7th. It will have a substantial single player component, set partially in North Africa because everyone loves North Africa. The single player will have coop as far as I know, just like Soldiers: Heroes of World War II. The coop is going to be AWESOME. S:HOWW2's coop was awesome because it was you and your buddy against overwhelming odds. The direct control of infantry and tanks + the detail of the game + the destructable environments led to some crazy action. Men of War also improves on Soldiers a lot with the controls. People are now grouped into squads and the AI is much better, leading to much less "my men are dumb and died" and much more "I AM EISENHAUR, I DEFECTED FROM AMERICANS TO GERMANS BECAUSE I LOVE THE TIGER!"
My ingame name is TychoCelchuuu. PM me if you want to be added to the list of PA people playing the beta. Right now there's no list because it's just me. WHY IS IT JUST ME.

It does cost you your time though. No game is free.
It would have to be incredible to top Company of Heroes. And from those screenshots it looks so similar I would have told you it was a mod if it wasn't third party.
Will be trying this out tomorrow. Lord knows I love me some RTS action.
You can control a Tiger as one unit. It is glorious.
Sold.
Wait, it's free.
Convinced!
Stupid american tanks.

I can't think of many other man-made creations that scare me more than tons upon tons of steel with a weapon capable of wrecking buildings rolling on two tracks that can roll over just about anything
It hungers.
... shit, I gotta get in on this. How many PA'ers are playing right now anyways? (Although seeing as this is a pretty new topic, I expect whatever number we've got to skyrocket pretty damn quickly.)
edit: fucking totp
Oh man, I'm ignorant of World War II and until this post I thought you were saying that there's actually a tiger in the game that devours your enemies at will.
I guess this games still sounds fun, though.
Tigers can be killed with bullets.

There is also a Tiger II (the "King Tiger"), but I am not sure if that's in the game or not.
Basically the Tiger variants were the best tanks of WW2, but they were hard to produce and Germany never had enough of them. Had Germany had Tiger's in Sherman or T-34 like numbers, and had they been more reliable in the cold, most of Europe would probably be speaking German still.
I should be complaining more about the american tanks than the tiger. Wet paper bags with guns.
3ds friend code: 2981-6032-4118
Well, to be fair, they WERE wet paper bags with guns. America had a "no tank-on-tank" combat doctrine, so the Sherman was really built to stop small arms fire, not 88mm panzer fire. Especially since the Germans created the worlds first SABOT anti-tank rounds, which basically made scrap metal of Shermans.
The honest truth is that the German tanks were simply ahead of their time. If you look at the modern main battle tank, like the M1A2, or the Challenger II, or even the German Panther II, they share a lot of design similarities with the Tiger/Tiger II....but in 1943 that technology was so new, so cutting edge, it made the Tiger's hard to produce and unreliable.

Err, uhh, yah....that's not a very good game design decision. If you want it to be even remotely fair/realistic, then you basically need a 10 to 1 Sherman to Tiger ratio.
Vhzod CoH went through a couple versions where infantry were useless and a few where tanks were useless. It takes a while to find a perfect balance, and I imagine they're working on it.
Yah, overwhelming numbers and production. World War II was an industrial war. He who could make the most shit, won...and the US and Britain used easy to produce tanks, planes and other equipment, that they could simply pump out faster than Germany could. It also didn't hurt that the US production facilities were basically safe from attack, ya know, being over here, while Germany's production centers were bombed daily.
It wasn't until 1945 that the US produce a really advanced piece of war equipment, in the P-51 Mustang. Even then it didn't go in to service until it could be mass produced. Basically, if Germany had been able to keep up with US and British production, with their technological advantages, they wouldn't have lost, or at least they wouldn't have lost as quickly.
True, but that was really just a catalyst for the real issue, which was the fact that Germany couldn't keep up with Allied industrial output. If they hadn't invaded Russia, they would have run in to the same issue, it just would've taken longer.
