Computer Display Oddity

There's something that's been bugging me about my laptop's display habits, and I was wondering if you guys could offer some advice about it.

My computer seems to sometimes have problems recognizing when there's a full-screen program running, and will bring up certain elements from the desktop even when I'm using those programs. For example, when I'm running Command & Conquer: Generals I will occasionally see the wireless internet icon flash in the lower right of the screen; likewise if I move my mouse over the lower portion of the screen I will see the programs my taskbar light up for a moment. More importantly, if I move the mouse to the bottom of the screen to make the in-game view scroll downwards, it will refuse to do so, I presume because it thinks I'm trying to access the taskbar. This pretty much makes the game unplayable, or at least more annoying than it's worth.

Such problems have surfaced in some other games I own as well (Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 and Simcity 4), but curiously not in others like Civilzation 4. I can temporarily fix the problem by changing the resolution of the game from 1024*768 to 800*600 and back again, but if I minimize the game and then restore it to continue playing the problem will come back.

If anyone knows how I could get rid of this problem, it'd be muchly appreciated!

PS I'm running Windows XP Media Centre Edition with Service Pack 3. My screen's resolution is 1280*800, if it matters.

But I don't mind, as long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine,
I'll be fine, just give me a minute, a man's got a limit, I can't get a life if my heart's not in it.

Try running the games in windowed mode, maximized over the full screen.

That is an odd resolution to have, do you have a widescreen monitor? 1024*768 is 4:3 1280*800 is 16:10 you may be trying to use a resolution that is the wrong shape. try one of these in the game if they are available or something that is at that ratio

    1440x900
    16:10
    1680x1050
    16:10
    1920x1200
    16:10
    2560x1600
    16:10
    3840x2400
    16:10
    7680x4800
    16:10

The game apparently isn't designed for windowed mode, but forcing it to run at exactly 1280*800 in the options.ini file did the trick. Thanks guys, this was driving me nuts!
