i tunes and OS- reinstall issues

OK, so here is the deal. I have to re install windows due to some serious issues caused by a virus. I got the virus off, but the damage has been done and now the machine crashes at random intervals, sometimes its a matter of minutes from start up, sometimes an hour or more. Now I want to preserve my music from I tunes, but have concerns about the time needed to burn them to disk for a re-install. My question is are there any good work arounds for this. Things I have considered include an external HD, trying to rip them from my I pod back to I tunes, or the like. A handful of options would be nice for me to choose from. Thanks for the help in advance....
