I'm pretty convinced my computer is having some kind of serious issue, but I can't figure out what it is.
My computer is a six year old Dell, running Windows XP with service packs 2 and 3 and all the updates. I use AVG Free, make sure I update it every day and run it every day. It is not finding any virii. When I run the error-checking thing at start up (which takes close to 45 minutes sometimes), it doesn't find any errors.
Random things go wrong for seemingly no reason at all. Yesterday, it was weird blotchs of color replacing the slider bars. I fixed that with help from this forum. The week before it was my speakers not working. The week before neither firefox or IE would launch. I just restarted a bunch of times and that made my browsers work again. (?!)
Today, Firefox wouldn't open. I tried all kinds of things, none of which worked. I copied my profile and uninstalled everything. Then, I tried to download the latest version, using IE7. IE crashes when I select save in the little box. It also crashes when I try to download Opera.
What the hell is going on?

if you want to make sure just back everything up and reformat/reinstal. so long as you have the windows cds itll be fine.
if its not a virus there are other ways to download besides clicking on links in IE. ill let someone else post them since i dont have my references at work.
Well thars ur prablem
Seriously though, I'm assuming your computer has never been reformatted, and eventually stuff just starts to die. Files get corrupt, or harddrive sectors fail and lose files completely, or physical components begin to fail. Six years is actually pretty good lifetime wise, especially for a Dell. I don't think I've ever seen a computer last even four years without needing a major overhaul.
If you want to stretch it's life out longer, you're probably looking at the very least a reinstall of Windows (after you've backed up all of your files to DVD or external harddrive).
[Edit] Though in the short term, it may be a problem with IE's downloader components. You could try using a third party download utility, such as bitcomet.
I would do a reformat thing, but I have not had my windows cds for probably 3 years. I've moved about 7 times in the last 6 years. Maybe I'll see if my IT friend can help me out.
