Skins - "I was getting tennis elbow, you know?"

Skins is a shit teeny-bopper drama aimed at retards. It encompasses every aspect of teenage life from getting stoned to going to raves and calling your parents dildos.

Pic of old cast:
SkinsC4_450x5621.jpg

Actually, Skins is a fantastic British drama based around the lives of a group of 16-19 year olds in Bristol, England. So far there has been two seasons and the third is in development. Each episode is based around a particular character, and begins with a montage of that character. It's very saddening and sometimes quite hilarious, like the second episode with is based around Cassie and her anorexia. The subject matter is what the writers describe as "the life of the average teen", this is an exaggeration but it does deal with topics which are quite controversial such a sex, drugs and rock n' roll.

Each chatacter in the show is unique and trying to describe them would be pointless. Here's a Wiki article describing the the main characters from seasons 1 & 2, but really, you have to see the show to get why they're so wonderful. The developers have said that the cast will be changed every two seasons, with each group of characters leaving the show as they go out into the world. The first season with a cast is to get to know them, and the second is to get the love them.

Skins has received mostly positive reviews and has been accepted very positively by audiences. It has won both BAFTAs and the Rose d'Or for Best Drama.

Season 3 has begun
skins_3_images_chris_clough_propert.jpg
Right, time to update this. Season three has started, with all of the original cast bar Effy leaving for college. Right means that there's a new group of lovable stoners to learn to love.

Characters:
Effy Stonem (Kaya Scodelario) is Tony's sister, and shares many of the same qualities as him. She used to talk very rarely, and saw a counsellor about this, but is now the leader of her group of friends; a very popular and desirable girl. On the first day of term she compiled a list for either Cook or Freddie to complete, in order to sleep with her. Her best friend is the innocent Pandora Moon (Lisa Backwell). She is sweet and naïve to the modern teenage world, hence often uneasy about Effy's daring exploits. Thomas Tomone (Merveille Lukeba) is an African boy, who recently emigrated from the Congo. Morally upright and good-hearted, he was instantly drawn to Pandora. Thomas was taken back home by his mother after she became disgusted with what she felt were the lax morals of British teenage culture, only to return a few days later.

James Cook, Freddie Mclair and JJ Jones are a contrasting set of best friends. Cook (Jack O'Connell) is charismatic and sociable, but boisterous and not afraid to break rules. On the first day of College, he broke every school rule in order to sleep with Effy, the first episode ended with a nervous teacher screaming as she heard Cook and Effy having sex in the medical room. Freddie (Luke Pasqualino) is an easy-going skater who likes to smoke weed, and often gets caught up in Cook's troublemaking but is thought to be the more sensible and moral one. He is the person JJ calls upon if Cook is about to do something daring or risky. The third friend, JJ (Ollie Barbieri), is a shy boy who doesn't know how to deal with people, and uses his magic tricks to attempt to make friends.

Naomi Campbell (Lily Loveless) is a fiery, passionate young woman with idealistic views and lots of ambition. She has a complex relationship with twins Katie (Megan Prescott) and Emily Fitch (Kathryn Prescott) due to an incident with her and Emily when they were younger. The twins are opposing characters; Katie wants to establish her individuality and Emily crippled by her own shyness. Katie thinks herself something of a WAG and is keen on being Effy's best friend in order to bolster her own popularity. Believing that Naomi is a lesbian, she often homophobically tries to exclude her from activities. Katie's sister Emily is much more down-to-earth but also insecure, and is experiencing difficulty coming to terms with her own homosexuality due to her sister's homophobia directed at Emily's object of affection, Naomi.

Karen Mclair (Klariza Clayton) is Freddie's sister, and has big dreams of being famous. She upsets her brother, however, by using their late mother as a sob story to further her singing career. Mackenzie Crook guest stars, playing psychotic Bristol gangster Johnny. Comedians Jordan Long and Justin Edwards feature as his inept henchmen Lucas and Benny. Scott Mills said on Chris Moyles's Radio 1 show on July 8, 2008 that he would be auditioning for the role of a television presenter on Skins. Ardal O'Hanlon will have a regular role as the gang's careless Northern Irish form tutor, Keiran MacFoeinaiugh (pronounced Mac-Phew). Juliet Cowan guest stars as the mother of JJ.

So far, Cook has assaulted a fetishist gangster, Pandora has acted strangely, Freddie has acted like an emo fag and Thomas has disobeyed his mother.

All the episodes of season 3 so far are up on 4OD as well as countless other less legtimate sites. It's been shown on BBC America and it's up on iTunes for those of you across the pond who are interested.

I watched seasons 1 and 2 in the span of a few days a month or so ago after catching two episodes on BBC America and wanting to see what came before. Next to Freaks & Geeks, it's my favorite show about adolescence.

Also, I can't imagine how the average American would react to this.

Also also, Sid's intolerable and Cassie's great.

This show is actually really great.

Late season 1 spoilers, I think:
My friend who told me about the show also told me Tony rapes his sister at one point, because he is coerced to do so.

When the scene came up I was like OH MY GOD IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN. And then it didn't.

In fact, based on this idea, the whole season I was convinced the show was going to take a seriously dark, twisted turn. It didn't. And there was no sister rape. But my god.

I enjoyed the first season as its based in Bristol where im from, its also supposedly heavily influenced by groups of kids who used to hang out on the College Green in town and such, of which I was a part of. That and it was an entertaining show.

The second season was pretty bad though, I did not enjoy it at all.

This show is awesome, but...these kids are seriously fucked up sometimes.

Unless England is more crazy then I thought. But I refuse to believe they are getting that much sex and drugs.
    Why? Because it's unfair, that's why! :(

Most of my entertainment came from also living in Bristol and recognising the types of people (spoiled little rich kids of all flavours) and places.

The second series was good, it was just very different. It wasn't the whimsical "Isn't Tony a hero?" stuff, it was much more depressing and about consequences.

In the first two episodes, I had the feeling that they were trying to be controversial for the sake of it (I won't say how so because of spoilers) but the latest three have been much better, focusing on the characters and their personalities rather then "olol teens doing drugs and having sex!".

Alright, if I don't like the first two episodes I'll be sure to continue on anyway.

Also, I gotta say that I was pretty surprised to see Anwar starring in Slumdog Millionaire. Skins isn't well-known in America, so that fact wasn't mentioned in the reviews of the film.

Season 3 is better then the previous seasons already. Less hedonism. More character interaction that isn't based on sex, drugs and...well, I'd say rock and roll, but they don't really do that much. The characters themselves are more likeable as well. Except Cook. He's horrible.

Plus, the new cast of girls is so much hotter then the previous ones. It's okay for me to lust after them because they are older/the same age then me.

    No Cassie = no watch.

TBH, after the first episode I just wasn't interested. I always saw Effy as someone who was so, like, above everyone else that she'd be hard to get, too smart, too pretty, etc and she always came across as that noone would be able to keep up with her and thus get with her.

Then she just goes and fucks the first random asshole she meets. And I realised the show was now just about young girls getting naked and fucking to satisfy the writers lusts.

    I miss Cassie.

Effy is the only one whose slutty. Every other time there's been fucking on the show, it was because they were drunk and vulnerable. It's supposed to be representative of teens. Teens have drunken sex.

Yeah, sex is really 1% of whatever episode you are watching anyway. There is plenty more going on.

And Effy isn't that superior, especially after the last ep. She is messed up, really.

It is kind of hard to see what's so attractive about Cooke, though, possibly because we're not teenage girls. Why anyone, much less Effy, would go for him is just impossible for an adult male to fathom.

And yeah, I kind of hate Effy now. Giving her a common dramatic problem like watching her parents break up made her too normal, and it doesn't help that he was unfazed by much worse, namely her brother's accident and her mother's addiction to pills.

And I couldn't care less about whether or not she gets together with skater guy, whom she loves despite the fact that there's no chemistry between them at all.

    Well like I said, Cass.

Cass seemed genuinely interesting to me but she was sweet, she was willing to slut it up but she seemed like a nice person at heart who cared maybe too much. Then the second season came along and that prat cheated on her and Tony recovered from his unrecoverable injury in like 6 weeks and having sex with his female self and..ugh. Yeah I don't know anyone whos had sex with their opposite gendered mental self.

I kind of like Pandora better than Cassie, who struck me as being a bit of a manic pixie girl. The manic pixie girl, for those who are unfamiliar with romance movie terminology, is an eccentric, exciting woman who possesses an inexplicable attraction towards ordinary, homely men and makes it her mission to drag them out of their ennui. Naturally, the man fucks things up somehow, but by the end of the story he's gotten her back somehow.

Anyway, so far Pandora's slumber party was my favorite episode, followed by Thomas'.

Whatever his name was didn't deserve Cass back. He fucked up big time. Its what turned me off the show the most because he cheated on her so what do the writers do? Turn her into a bicycle for random assholes to use for sex. Classy.
