I've got another speech coming up and this time around it's persuasive.
We've been told it has to be over a topic with two sides. The examples we were given were topics such as lowing the drinking as to 21, or the legalization of marijuana.
Now, we were told these topics were off limits as they're very cliche and over done (it's a college class).
I can't seem to come across a lot of ideas for topics. Most of them seem to hot and I just plain hate.
Things like gay marriage, death penalty etc.
Is there anything out there that's more "light"?
I'm better off giving more light hearted speeches, it comes more naturally to me. My last speech was on Top Gear and I loved talking about some of the crazy things they've done.
I can barely think of any more topics then those I've presented here even.
i did a persuasive speech on why Bigfoot is real, do something like that and have fun with it
As much as I'm not really a fan of the whole "paranormal" or whatever,
this is probably one of the easier things to find references on that's is more light hearted.
Should train development be pushed over reliance on airplanes in the US?
Given the waste disposal issue, should nuclear power be developed over dirtier alternatives (coal, oil) or less efficient alternatives (wind, solar)?
Should paparazzi-type activities be regulated in LA by mandating special license plates, labels, etc.?
Net-neutrality (should ISPs be regulated on what they can and can't do in relation to their pricing systems)
John Edwards: does he have a leg to stand on?
You could do something all meta and argue that giving persuasive speeches is ultimately pointless or something.
Or argue how chess is a very poor game. Things like reliance on memorized opening moves etc.
Have a look thru D&D... plenty of topics being argued about there. The one on whether stealing MMO items can be considered theft is pretty interesting.
RIAA is bad for music. Or the ipod/itunes. DRM...
Argue how ultimatly blu-ray vs HDdvd is dumb because it doesnt matter, the reality is that the first person to come along that delivers digital movies/tv to your tv on demand over the internet is going to win. Use things like mp3's as an example that people really dont care about quality as much as they think they do, where its really convenience that wins out. Big players out there are netflix, hulu, xbox live, apple tv.
Argue that we dont need the letter 'C' because those words can be represented with a 'k' or an 's' just fine.
Speeches are better if the person giving them actually cares about the subject matter. Mmmm..., you have to have *something* that you feel strongly about that has two sides.
Arguably, the problem with something lighthearted for a persuasive speech (on a subject that has two sides) is that if you fabricate the sides, technically that's not doing the assignment. If I were a teacher, I would dock students who respond to this assignment with strawmen -- more so if they were strawmen they just made up as if it were a creative writing class. I've given speeches and presentations for undergrad and graduate classes, and taking it seriously is a better way to go about it. But caring about the subject is the way to get an A, because it makes research and presentation that much easier and natural.

Argue we should get rid of the penny
