Pretty sure my HDD is borked, how can I make sure?
Delayed write errors to my s-ata drive. Physical cabling is fine afai can tell.
Problem presents itself with stutters in performance and delayed write error crashes, esp. when transferring large amounts of data. Has appeared in relation to several different files, too, and am inclined to think there's a defect on a particular 'part' of the disk. Have formatted, still have the problem. Also caused crash when attempting to defrag. Have had windows installed on it previously.
One bluescreen but I didn't grab the details.
Question: Are there any diagnostic programs that will find the specific problem, and if it is a write error is there anything I can do to fix it or is it just time to buy a new HDD?
Well, I don't know how worth your while it is to even try to find out what is wrong with it specifically. It's clearly broken and it's clearly hardware. Time for a new HD. Maybe check the warranty info.
The manufacturer should have some utility that can look at the SMART diagnostics (which are pretty worthless but in this case would report the drive is failing). That will tell you what you already know.

Use it wisely.
Only problem is, it doesn't want to detect either drive. Sigh.
