Snes Games (Previously Power Supply!)

Mr_GrinchMr_Grinch Registered User regular
edited November 2008 in Games and Technology
This post was previously about power supplies for the SNES. I'm now up and running nicely and have managed to acquire:

Super Mario World
Donkey Kong Country
Mario Kart
Starwing
Super Mario All-Stars

I just missed out on getting Zelda. What would people recommend? I only really ever played on a friend's SNES when I was younger so I've essentially just re-created his library!

Previous post below:

This may be more fitted in the technology sub-forum but I figured it'd get more attention here :)

I just picked up a SNES from a carboot sale for £10 with a pad. I've got video cables for it but I don't have a power supply. Has anyone idea if I'd be ok picking up something like this:

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9829701.htm

to power it?

Also I don't have any games yet but I know the second hand store down the road from me has Super Mario World and All-Stars for pretty cheap so I'll be grabbing them (£10 for the both).

Anyone any other recommendations? :)

I think you mean Super Mario World. Super Mario Land is a Game Boy game.

    I don't know what you're talking about :p

Also I've answered my own question. I've found my girlfriend's laptop cable fits the SNES perfectly and is spot on the right voltage for it. Now I just need to get me some games.

Just monitor the heat level on the laptop brick to make sure it doesn't heat up more than normal. Not sure about the effects of higher voltage and mA running through the unit.

Does the current match up as well as the voltage? You should be fine if so.

although it looks like with shipping you'd be paying more for that than you did for the console :/

Cool, I might pick that up. Apparently a SNES is:

    10V DC 850Ma Negative Tip

    The adapter I have is 19V 3.42A.

So...erm...a bit more powerful than the one I should be using :)

    ::edit::

I now have another one that's 9V and 300mAmps so that's too low. Grr. Looks like I'll actually have to buy something! When I switch a snes on, without a cartridge in, should I get a blank screen?

You will also notice the little red light is on as well. As a side note, I found that one of the generations of Genesis has a power brick that works with the SNES. Also, in the US there is a chain of stores called 'Radio Shack' that carries power adapters for ~$15 that you can switch the connector size/voltage/etc on, so you do have a chance at finding something local that will work without having to order online.

Try maplin in the UK, basically the same as radio shack

Edit: Just looked and that argos one should be fine, 9v *should* do the job and if I remember correctly it will only pull the current it needs, provided it comes with the right "tip"

The voltage has to match up exactly but the current doesnt matter as long as its equal or greater then what the unit requires. A device only draws as much current as it needs.

Cheers for the advice folks. I'm going to try this one I've got with a game (picking a few games up off a friend tomorrow and buying a couple too) and see if it works. The red light comes on which I guess is a good sign. If I have problems though I'll pick up that argos one.

I'm just excited I have a SNES at last, I missed out on one in my childhood (I was an Amiga kid) and had to go round to a mates to play it. Carboot sales have been kind to me recently:

Megadrive - £2 with Sonic and two pads
Dreamcast - £4 with two pads and three games.
    Snes - £10 with a pad.

I was also massively tempted to pick up a Mega CD 2/Mega Drive 2. Someone had them both boxed in fantastic condition with about 20 games for £60 but I didn't have enough cash on me and I knew if I got it it'd just end up never being used.

    ::edit::

Prime: So chances are the 19v laptop adapter would really fuck up the snes? (As far as I can tell the Snes should be powered by a 10v at most)

Well that depends on the sensitivity of the unit (in a SNES I have no idea but im sure you can find the ratings/specs somewhere online) but its not doing it any favours.

Yeah, I've seen them, they're very cool but there's something nice about playing the games on the original consoles. Even if they do take up a lot of room in total :)

just a note but if youve got an s-video compatible tv you should get a gamecube s-video cable and run your SNES through that. the plug is the same so it will fit (on the US SNES anyway... presumably on the UK one also) and it will look way crisper and nicer.

Thanks for the info, good sir. I've had a set of Gamecube s-video cables collecting dust in my closet for years that I've now put to good use. Hooray for crisp pixels! :P

The SNES, N64, and Gamecube (but not the wii), use the same connector for their composite/s-video cables, so at the very least, composite cables should be very easy to come by

Yeah, I have an NES & SNES. I have to steal my Genesis back from my sister. I never had a Master System so I'm planning to buy one of those for normal use to keep thing simple in the entertainment system. What I'm trying to track down (besides games) is a top loading NES.

PS2 + xbox use exactly the same power lead don't they? The transformer is built in to the machine. THe PS2 one and the Xbox one should be safely interchangable. You also get the same cable with a few portable hifi systems etc.

Sounds like it was just your xboxs time. You CAN replace the power supply on them but you can pick up (at least here in the UK) and original Xbox for £10 so it's hardly worth it :)

Also I'll find out tonight how it went, I'm picking up some games at lunch today!

I think the slim ps2 uses an external transformer similar to the xbox 360. If that's what he meant, I can see how mixing up the cables could cause problems.

Ahh, didn't know about that. Still, would have thought the Xbox could handle that. It's a tough little bugger :)

Just found a second hand store about 20mins from work and picked up Super Mario World and Mario Allstars. Getting Zelda on the way back from the train station too.

Now all I need is Mario Kart (for now) and I'll be happy.

Theres no region locking, but IIRC the carts have a different shape so you can't insert them unless your going to physically mod your console. Or take off the lid I guess.

You can get an adapter that will do it for you too.

I called in at the second hand shop on the way home, they'd bloody sold Zelda.

On the plus side they'd also got in a few new games. I picked up:

    Mario Kart
    Starwing
    Donkey Kong Country

I still want to find Zelda though.

New op, slightly. I would like good Snes game recommendations. I intend to pick up Zelda: LTTP but I want some other stuff. Try to keep it popular-ish, I've got to track these down (and to add extra fun and challenge I've decided not to "cheat" and use ebay)

    What? o_O

Unless you're playing Moon Consoles, both of those (the regular PS2 and the Xbox) used a regular ungrounded two-wire plug that pipes AC current into the console, which does its converting internally. And unless you really made some serious efforts to chop/rewire/solder wires, a slim PS2 plug shouldn't physically fit into the Xbox's port.

    tl;dr You're lying
