I haven't had any problems with Windows 7 and games other than Punkbuster and Battlefield 2142. I guess PB isn't going to support the beta so it triggers a Windows API call error and kicks me out.

I can't play CoD4 online 'cause of the PB errors - but everything else plays without a hitch. Installed Fallout 2 and Mirror's Edge yesterday and they both run fine.

Supposedly running in XP compatibility mode fixes this. The only problem is that the .exe won't detect the disk in the drive so their DRM keeps me from loading up the game.

I purchased it over Steam, so I don't run into that, but I've tried almost everything I've read out there. Disabling the Steam Overlay, both XP and Vista Compatibility, shutting off Skype/Xfire/Precision - keeps booting to desktop.
I'm sure there's something that will fix it - but if EB aren't going to support the beta then I'll just have to suck it up.
Does anyone have ANY idea why Grabit won't work on Windows 7? It installs just fine and works on this same PC with WinXP SP3. I think it's a network/security issue but I can't figure out how to resolve it.
So I have a 9600GT and the Beta drivers for Windows 7, and for whatever reason, the screen will blink every so often. Some times I can play a game or just browse the web for hours with out it doing it. Other times its like every 2 or 3 min that the screen will blink black and then go back to normal. Anyone else have this issue?
So I'm upgrading from Vista 64 to 7 64. Doing an upgrade, not a fresh install (I only installed Vista a couple months ago and don't want to set it up again).
However, this caught me off guard:
The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.
There are multiple users currently logged on to Windows. Please have the other users log off.
For these items, make the following changes:
Uninstall these programs. Open Control Panel and search for "uninstall a program".
Windows PowerShell
When Vista was first released, I remember reading about a way to do a fresh install with the upgrade disc. Did I misread or was that actually possible?
It is..sort of. You first install Vista without entering the product key, then you go back and reinstall Vista with your product key. It will then act and register as an upgrade and allow you to activate.
Ahhh, okay. I wonder if the upgrade can be used over the pre-release builds (specifically the RC). My laptop came with Vista, so I can use an upgrade version, but that'd take effort.
Upgrading from a previous installation is something you should never do. With any OS. It never ends up as good as a reformat and fresh install.
I know I know... but... I gave it a shot anyway. Worst case scenario I have to format and install it again.
So far so good except for a few apps that don't work anymore. Sound doesn't work in WoW for some reason, but Mount & Blade is fine. Lack of ultramon sucks.
Next time I'll probably just switch to Arch or Ubuntu and get frustrated with wine/cedega.
I got lazy jumping from 6801 to 6956 and just upgraded. No problems so far, but it's technically upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 7, sooo I'm not sure if this is relevant at all.
Hmm interesting results from the performance index thingy:
On Vista everything was 5.9 except disk was 5.7 I think. Why would my disk go from 5.7 to 2.9?
You might want to check your hard disk with a SMART tool to make sure your hard drive isn't in the throes of impending doom.
HDD Health seems simple and easy enough. (run it as administrator)
For example, this is my work pc...
First hard disk (I have Vista installed on here):
Second hard disk (I have Ubuntu installed on here):
Vista Performance thing:
It only seems to test hard drives that windows can read. Also note how the second hard disk doesn't seem to be as healthy, it is an older drive than the Samsung so therefore is makes sense to not be as in good shape.

...To reflect this real world learning, in the Windows 7 Beta code, we have capped scores for drives which appear to exhibit the problematic behavior (during the scoring) and are using our feedback system to send back information to us to further evaluate these results. Scores of 1.9, 2.0, 2.9 and 3.0 for the system disk are possible because of our current capping rules.
Anyone else having trouble with Flash in IE8? I went to Adobe's site and the flash there ran fine and said v10 was installed. I go to other flash video sites, and some of them work and most of them say "install flash".

You're hurting your actual performance by turning it off, though. I would ignore the WEI numbers for now.
Basically you can score a 5 on everything apart from graphics. If you score low on the graphics you bring everything else down. Should really build these scales dependant on purpose.

Well no, not really. You can turn it off, then run the test, then turn it back on again if you really care. Write caching is only really necessary for laptops anyways.

I disagree, even the best desktop platter drives aren't that quick yet.
What I'm saying is that low disk score doesn't mean anything. The current beta is artificially capping it at 2.9 or 3 because it sees some caching behavior that the Windows engineers consider a potential problem, not because of any actual slowness. Disabling write caching will give you a more accurate WEI number, but you're not actually gaining anything.
On the matter of write caching, we very much believe it is a mistake that the WinEI score improves dramatically when write caching is disabled. We don't recommend disabling write caching and are working to understand how best to prevent the scores from improving so dramatically simply by disabling the cache. We do know, tha write caching typcially helps best with large sequential reading sequences and that disabling the cache prevents the build up of background work that may later interfere w/ subsequent reads. In other words, with caching disable we don't see the very long IOs that result in our capping the score at a low level.

Still having this issue, still can't find a reason why its doing it.

Well yes, obviously it's just a cosmetic thing. I'm just saying, if you want a high score, you can just uncheck a box and rerun the test.
Is this being released for realz anytime soon?
I mean I'm building a computer within the month
should I go ahead and put vista on it or what is the deal here
So theres a rumor floating around that this will be a free upgrade to anyone who bought Vista. So if you have Vista Home you get W7 Home, ect. No idea if thats true. But boy would that be something.
