My biggest gripe with this game so far is that I see no good reason that I, a PC gamer, should have to call up a computer interface to switch weapons. Give me mouse wheel weapons and number keys or give me death. Seriously. This shit is getting old, fast.
I guess your other big gripe is reading the manual.
I dont blame him, I made the same mistake. Didnt have time to read the manual, since as soon as I got the game I ripped it open, installed it, and played for 26 hours straight
If I target someone in VATS, Johnny Psycho leaps forward and tears their arms off. This is awesome, but if I attack normally, Johnny Psycho holds it in front of himself like some sort of fantastic dong and I'm forced to make him kinda rub up against people until they die.
Not as awesome. Is there a trick to using this thing or am I going to have to get my slashy kicks elsewhere?
I split his skull with an assault rifle. Instantly a replacement DJ comes on GNR, hilarious. Except I did this before completing his quest for information about dear old dad's whereabouts. How hard is it going to be to pick up his trail now?
Playing through this game as a unbalanced serial killer has proved interesting so far.
I've not been able to play for more than 2 hour bursts, but for people about to do the minefield...
When you approach the town, get up on the cliffs where the smokestacks and radio tower are. If you stole the hunting rifle from Simms' son or bought one from the caravan, get as close as you can and snipe Arkansas while hidden. Not only was it a fairly easy shot, but he's the only guy there, and he has a sweet ass drop. Just keep an eye out for the mines. :-)
Double edit - Oh man, guys, don't read the above spoiler until you've been through the town!
Triple edit - Or, obviously, the one below :P
My encounter with Arkansas was the stuff of legend...
Slowing picking my way though the town, super carefully to look for mines. *CRACK!* Hmm... Wonder what that was. Don't see anyone around. Oh well, maybe a dog stepped on a mine or something.
*CRACK!* *CRACK!* Hmm... Thats odd. I swear that car wasn't on fire a second ago... I wonde- *BOOM!* Car explodes, exploding a mine, exploding me. Crippled both legs. I dragged myself, stupidly, behind another car.
*CRACK!* sssssss... *BOOM!*
Anyway, it took me a great many stimpaks before I figured out what the hell was going on. Didn't expect any of it, and it was awesome.
EDIT - Oh, and good God were those abandoned houses in Minefield amazingly atmospheric. Very, very sobering stuff.
Man that part was great - primarily because I wasn't expecting it at all.
I wouldn't have written mine if I didn't have the same experience as you did.
Jesus. Where did all my health go? *CRACK* Oh shit, there's a dude up on that building!

That's what's really so awesome about this game... I've had many a very memorable experience just going through the course of normal exploration. The quests have been great so far, but it really is a case of "it's not the destination, it's the journey."
I know I'm supposed to go into the other half of the ship to talk to this Pinkerton dude, but how do I get in there? The door lock level leads me to think someone has a key somewhere.
Is there any evil solution to this quest line besides just slaughtering everyone? It seems like no matter what I end up gaining karma unless I just want to kill everyone.

The journey bit is the interesting part, to me.
I mean, there's playing Fallout, and there's playing Fallout.
One guy leads a hardscrabble existence, piecing together pieces of armor with wire and desperately counting bullets while he hides behind a rock... While another guy clawed his way up the food chain using every dirty trick in the book and very rapidly found himself tromping around the wasteland in power armor with a house strapped to his back and a plasma rifle in hand, shooting people just because he likes to see them [strike]die[/strike] turn into goo.
I accidentally took the second route. I think I'm gonna revert to my glorious victory over the first trade caravan I encountered and just stay out of D.C proper for a while.
As a lying, thieving female, I convinced Burke that I lived there and he suddenly fell head over heals for me. Told me he had to go and would return and that I should wait for him. So I don't. But I never see him anywhere in town anyway. Is my girly heart broken?

So far I've been the good guy, scraping along on a mostly honest living, and only killing what has provoked me or those who I'm with. Though I'll take damn near anything that isn't nailed the fuck down if I'm neutral towards that party.
I know I'm supposed to go into the other half of the ship to talk to this Pinkerton dude, but how do I get in there? The door lock level leads me to think someone has a key somewhere.
Swim down between the two halves, there's a door underwater.

I had Jericho with me for Minefield, and the first thing he says as we enter was "That looks like a fucking good place for a sniper, watch out."
How the hell do I get to arlington library? When I'm outside, my nav points to marigold station, however when I'm inside marigold station, it points back wherever I came from! And this invisible wall bullshit is preventing me from - god forbid - just fucking walking there.
Anyone feel like the combat is a little easy? When I left the vault, I turned around and went down some half-collapsed freeway with a bunch of raiders on it -- and slaughtered them all. I've got a flamer, a sniper rifle, and some grenades now, and I just stepped out into the world. I realize they're not super mutants or anything, but still.
Oh, and exploding cars are cool. As are raiders who can't throw grenades (or maybe I shot the grenade by accident? I'm not sure).
The only problem is that it doesn't fire. I have 5 mini nukes but firing the thing just makes a clicking noise like it has no ammo. I can go into VATS with it and target someone but when I tell it to go, my guy stands there and clicks 5 times in a row, no mini nuke.
Combat is easy until every enemy you encounter is a super mutant armed with either a minigun or a tree or a lamp post.
Ammo becomes an issue.
Early on it's easy enough if you play it safe and don't get shot or clubbed. It's those times when you can't help but get shot, clubbed and otherwise used in cruel and unusual ways that things get hairy and you feel really happy you picked up all those mines.
Two questions. The first is: How do I advance time in the game without sleeping or traveling? I couldn't find anywhere in the pip-boy to do it, but probably just stupidly overlooked it. I checked the manual too, but again, may have overlooked it.
and the second, regarding the important Megaton stuff:
I killed Burke while he was trying to shoot the Sheriff. Am I right in thinking that I need to diffuse the bomb before I can get the house and all that jazz? I'd have to put my next level's skill points into explosives, and even though I know it's worth it, I'd rather do it another way. Might there be a drug of piece of clothing that can raise explosives +10? I'm level 3 almost 4 right now.

If I had the money I would be a PC gamer. It's undoubtedly the best way to play games like this, and Civ IV (which I can actually play) and other awesome sim games.
I have a heavily modded Oblivion right now that I've put about 250 hours into. If I could I would've had Fallout 3 on PC without any hesitation... but I need a laptop for my work and don't have the moolah to build a good rig ($1000 is even out of the question)...
But hey, I can still share in the awesomeness that is FO3! At least until that badass Oblivion mod community switches gears to Fallout and turns the game into gold.

I'm off to go raid the Bed and Breakfast in the middle of the night. There's about 6 dudes around the area, and a few dogs.

I had the same question, then I popped a Mentat and tried it again. Tada!
Silly Question maybe, is there anywhere i can store items, like a house i can buy or something. Im constantly getting over encumbered cause i dont wanna sell those misc items that i can use to make new weapons.

Everything you could possibly need to know to start is right there.
