Okay, I have a cheapo Labtec wired mic, this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836111208. I got it for TF2. Also, my computer's audio is onboard, running Realtek HD. Anyway, this mic works for everything but TF2. In Audacity, its fine. In general voice recording its fine. If I do a microphone test in Steam without TF2 running its fine. BUT, if I do a microphone test in TF2, it feedback loops and tries to blow my headphones off my head with shear sound. That's right, its fine in Steam Voice chat, but not in TF2 voice chat. Naturally I have tried every conceivable combination of muted settings in the HD Realtek control panel and in the Windows XP master volume box. I am thoroughly stumped. Once I realized it worked in Steam but not TF2, I knew something really fucked up was going on, so please help me. I feel silly catching myself yelling "Spy Pyro!!!" with voice chat turned off.
Someone let me algorhythm (steve_0990) into the PA Steam group
My mic problems were solved by changing the audio input only AFTER I launched Steam and TF2.
Even if Steam was running with the mic working fine I still needed to alt-tab out of the TF2 menu and tell it to use my mic as input.
