I've been getting more and more crashes lately, for some odd reason. I've tried adding Steam to FFDShow's exceptions, but it still turns on. How would I add Fallout 3 to the exceptions, if it's through Steam?
I was getting crazy crashes and the FFDShow fix wasn't working. Putting fallout3.exe into Windows 2000 compatibility mode has let me play the game for hours without a crash though. It only took 3 days of me trying various things to try this :x
Anyway, try that.
The 360 version isn't without crashes, either. I've had three so far. It seems to happen if I play it for enough time. Hopefully both versions will get a patch soon.

I went and got the ghoul quest, you know, 3 options, kill the ten penny residents, kill the ghouls or convince the ten penny residents to let them stay. The two kill options are bad karma hits (playing good) and FUCK, you need SPEECH skill to convince them. So I was fucked either way. I'm kinda pissed off. I went from Peacekeeper to Neutral.
If you convince Tenpenny to let them, when you come back you'll find that the ghouls killed everyone else. It made me angry and I murdered every single one of them. I stand up for them and then they pull shit like that? I don't think so.
Did you let them in via the basement after you got the agreement or went back to their hideout? Cause I went back to their hideout and told them they were allowed in, and humans and ghouls live there together...Except for Tenpenny, which that ass bastard roy killed anyway.
I was meaning to head over to Tenpenny Tower to see if I could any quests there even though I went the good route with Megaton. But where is Tenpenny Tower? I saw it awhile back when I was perusing around the Wastleland, but never headed over there. I forgot which area it was in and now can't find it anymore. :P
Location of Tenpenny Tower:
Southwest of Megaton, five of the little squares on the map over from the bottom left of the map. It's so tall that you should be able to see it when you're in the general vicinity anyway, though.

Same way you would normally, just go into your content folder in steam for fallout and add the executables.
It takes about 15 shotgun shells, or 2 clips from my chinese assault rifle to take down a fire ant warrior, frag and pulse mines and grenades do so little damage their health bar doesn't even show it, and there seems to be a limitless supply of them, FUCK. Not to mention their built in flamethrowers charbroil me in seconds if i get within 20 feet
Sneak attacks with the hunting rifle to their heads. This hurts them. A lot. I was one shotting soldiers with 30 in small guns and for warriors I just sneak attacked then semi auto fired 7-8 shots at their heads with my assault rifle.
Landmines also work well because while they don't do lots of damage after a sneak attack to the head they don't need to.
I also think it's not rediculous that the baddies will lemming over a mine while chasing you. At least not the first one or two. I ran over quite a few in minefield until I slowed to a crawl to look for the ones that weren't just blatantly laying in the middle of the road. I do kind of wish the AI was able to recognize if they're placed in locations that make them almost impossible to miss but I imagine that'd be hard to implement.
Hmm.. I'm about 5 hours into the game but I haven't been able to sit down and put a huge amount of time into it. Seriously thinking about just restarting and remaking my character now that I understand the mechanics a little better.
Why would you write shit down? Just look for words that share letters in the same position and take your time.
P... Position?
If the word is FUCK,
PUCK would be 3/4,
And KOOF would be 0/4,
and KCUF would be 0/4,
And EUCH would be 1/4.
The correct number is not just letters correct, it's letters and POSITION correct.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but to me it seems the higher my hacking skill, the less words there are on the board. At most there seems to be about five or six, which makes it really easy. I'll usually just pick the first three words to see if I get lucky, then pick the grouped keys to remove duds and replenish my allownace.
I didn't know about the grouped keys at first, which made things much harder. I hated hacking until someone explained it to me. Then it just became really God damned easy.
In case anyone else doesn't know, look for the groups of keys that are encased by (), [], <>, and {}.
Lockpicking is easy, too. I actually like these minigames. Just move the bobby pin left or right and turn the lock slowly to see if it'll work. If the bobby pin shakes right away, you're in the wrong direction.

Harder hacking attempts have longer words, though, so if you don't know about the brackets you are basically screwed.
Once you get a house, the robot butler gives out purified water on occasion. This can be turned in in front of Megaton or Rivet City, and potentially other towns, to a local who claims to be "dying of thirst" and "can't drink that irradiated shit." When you give him purified water, it gives you good karma.

Regarding enemies, usually I would just go in and shoot for the body or head with VATS because they would do more damage, but now I'm having more fun and being more effective by shooting limbs. Those enemies you're having trouble with are fast, so take out one of the legs to slow them down so you can take them out from a distance. Deathclaws are a pain in the ass because they're so quick, but when I take out their leg(s) with a shotgun blast or two, they're harmless. It's equally fun shooting the guns out of peoples hands.
I know it's such an obvious hint, but it's something I ignored for quite a number of hours in the game because the limb shots didn't do as much damage.

Yeah wtf. How can you guys not like hacking? Sure, its not just instant, and it can take some time if you are really thinking about it, but this isn't fucking Bioshock. There arn't a billion and one things to hack every second. In fact, I've probally only hacked 7-10 terminals on my science heavy level 10 character. I for one, am GLAD its not quick and easy.

The problem with those specific enemies is that on very hard, a sneak attack to the head with a hunting rifle, might *maybe* do 10% damage, same for limbs. So even after crippling a limb the main problem I was hitting (and would still be except I gave up for now) is that there was literally no way I could get enough ammo to do it. I'd go in with 100 each of shotgun shells, 10mm bullets, whatever the hunting rifle uses, microfusion cells, kill 4 or 5 of them and be out of ammo
Yeah it'd be nice if you could scroll up and see all your picks.
On the PC version at least all your picks are on the right side. And the way it lists them can be used for positioning. Shouldn't need to write anything down and shouldn't take more than a minute tops. Honestly, if it's harder than that I'm guessing you have a really crappy hacking skill (science?) and are trying to do more with it than you really can.
Edit, also I've never used and didn't know about the extra codes or whatever. Never needed them though if you use decent tactics, such as ruling out ING words (pick a word with ING, if you get less than 3 correct you've ruled out every ING word on the board).
I came across the anchorage memorial by mistake and killed all the mirelurks down there. Then when I accepted the quest to go down there, i was able to run top to bottom in 2 minutes and complete the option quest of not killing anything whilst down there.
I have a question about the conclusion to the Blood Ties quest:
I talked to Ian West and my speech skill was high enough to convince him without giving him the letter. If I do it that way, instead of giving him his sister's letter, would I still get the xp from Lucy's quest?
Awwww man, why did they have to bring over Oblivion's crappy level scaling for the wastes? Just because I'm level 20 doesn't mean I want to burn hundreds of microfusion cells wiping out waves upon waves of werebears and giant scorpions while I explore. What the fuck is wrong with placing enemies based on the area!? It's worked well for every other publisher than Bethesda, and yet they doggedly insist on doing it in all their games.

Last I heard this is not at all the case
I heard their spiel about them not using Oblivion-style scaling, too, and maybe it's true for quests and locations. But a deathclaw just jumped me within sight of Megaton. In the wastes, it scales all the way.
Don't get me wrong, I absofuckinglutely love this game, it just feels - once again, like Oblivion - that I'm being punished for leveling. Rather than enjoying my power and being able to explore in peace, I spend more time fighting random mobs than ever. I'd say people should do their wandering early on before the scaling rapes them, but then again, that's HOW I ended up level 20 too soon. And I've still not seen even half of what's out there.

It is not, but certain parts of the wasteland are more dangerous than others. Obviously the area around Vault 101 only has really easy enemies like bloatflies and raiders wielding lead pipes, but the further you get out the more dangerous it is.

Started again once I'd realised that the two levels of Swift Learner I'd taken were a waste. Forgot there was a level cap. But anyway, I very much enjoy walking through the wastes in the Armoured Vault Suit and the red baseball cap, with baseball bat, giving a hearty THWACK to the mutants. Oh, so satisfying.

Hehe same here. Wearing the Regulator duster (I never said I was a nice cowboy), with the Shady Hat, and mostly using the .44 scoped magnum and hunting rifle. The Gunslinger and Commando perks are awesome for that reason, just whittling down an opponent before I walk up to him and blast him. Really wish you could pistol whip or butt-stroke, though.
Tell me this game is not atmospheric. I just had a shit moment. You know feeling alone in the wasteland and was searching out a building with dogmeat and then someone is pounding on the door from the OUTSIDE!
So power armour. How the heck can you wear it when it weighs like 80lbs suit/helmet. I tried to pick some up when I threw down with some bad power armored dudes but its so damned heavy! I won't be able to carry no loots.

The way it's supposed to work is that levels are scaled to a certain point, and each area has a range of levels in it. So if you're level 3 and you wander into an area that has levels 6-8, all the enemies are level 6. But if you leave and come back to that area at level 10, all the enemies will be level 8. I don't know if it's true or not, but you notice that some areas are a lot harder than others in terms of enemies.

My character is dressed like a cowboy, complete with lever-action rifle and revolver, so I very much enjoy shooting the weapons out of peoples' hands.
Yeah... I didn't notice any level scaling.
