I was gonna get this on 360 but I've heard rumors of crashes. Is this a common problem? I experienced the GTAIV crash madness aswell, remember it taking weeks to finish it just because I could only play about 30 minutes straight - once a day. That's the only game I've had a problem with so far, Dead Space runs like a wet dream etc...

So does the 360 version have GTAIV mad crash habits?

I've had 4 crashes in 40+ hours of play.

On the PS3, the 360 version is more stable. It's not a big problem, it's just a consequence of it being both a Bethesda and Fallout game, which basically destined it to be more than a little buggy.

I crashed one time on the 360 version, heard a loud CRUNCH then the game stuttered twice and stopped. Reloaded, went back to the same area, no problems.

Thanks all for you experiences, I'll be buying it for 360 then - I'm sure it'd crash more on my computer anyways!

    I love this game.

Fighting fire ants is amazing, because your usual strategy with enemies is to hide in cover and back yourself into walls and blast when the enemy comes around a corner. But with fire ants, you want open spaces, long distances between you and them. Also, fucking frenzied ants flaming cars and they explode.

    This game is just immense.

Im constantly amazed by how much Bethseda has improved over Oblivion, im really impressed that they actually took the criticism to heart and improved every conveivable aspect of the gameplay from their previous game. I really respect this.

I don't know - I just snuck around and one-shotted most of them with a laser pistol.

One-shotted? I played this when i was level 3, are you talking about fire-ants? You oneshotted the soldiers and warriors?

I started the area at about level 6, gained at least one during and if shot from [hidden] the workers and soldiers were vaporized instantly.
But the level-scaling thing confuses me too much to know if I beat the system. When I was level 3 I ran into Grayditch, saw two ants fire-blasting one another and said "Fuck this" until a quest led me into the town.

So, this game is friggin awesome. Like, top 5 of all time awesome (so far).

100% agreed. I played Fallouts 1,2, and tactics in september/october because I couldn't wait for this one. It feels just right. I never thought a game could be this immersive. Morrowind and Oblivion were good in that I would just walk around and sight see and feel like I was kind of there.

This game takes that immersive feeling to a completely new level. I was walking about in DC checking/looting buildings, when I found a charred skeleton reclining in a bathtub with a magazine and a beer. There was a working radio nearby playing some old timey music. It was a jarring and unnerving experience. Some guy was just relaxing in the tub when armageddon happened. The game is full of little details like that. They make walking in a nuclear wasteland feel so real its scary.

I can't wait to see what modders come up with. I am already imagining the possibilities for a hardcore survival mod. The modders for oblivion did some incredible things.

I am so glad I resisted my impulse to get this on 360. The PC version is going to be totally worth the bugs and tech hassles.

I was around that level too, and they take ages for me to kill. Most everything does in this game to be honest. Sometimes if I get a shot from sneaking I can kill them quick (the workers usually die fast from everything), but the soldiers take like 5 shots to the head or more to die. I also can only get maybe one sneak attack off then every fire ant in a 5 mile radius knows exactly where I am.

I've actually given up putting points into sneak because it feels useless. Unlike in Oblivion where I just arrow sneak attacked anything and everything, I feel like a have a big giant arrow above my head that calls out where I am in FO3. I actually just go into sneak every once in a while to see if it says 'caution' or 'danger' to see if I should expect an attack soon.

I've been putting most of my points into energy weapons, and my laser pistol still seems to suck. The weapon I use the most is the hunting rifle (despite hardly putting any points into small arms), just because ammo seems plentiful, the accuracy from is better from further away than a pistol, and it does about twice as much damage as the pistol.

If you can pull off a sneak attack crit from [hidden] you can one-shot quite a lot of things. I one-head-shot a super mutant in the museum from hidden while he was on the balcony. He never took his weapon out and I blew his head clean off.

Yeah, I love those kinds of details too. I had a quest to go into a suburb and had to navigate a mine field, I went into the houses there and there were houses that had a skeleton couple lying in bed together and I thought it was kind of sad.

Another awesome aspect of the game's immersion is how easy it is to get lost or disoriented in a strange-charred out city you don't know. If it weren't for my pip-boy I'd have been lost so many times.

I LOVE this game. I will be playing this game for a long time.

    Has anyone encountered a
mercenary team, with a contract for your head?

I ran into one on my way to Arefu, we literally bumped into each other while walking around a rock formation. It was a tough fight, three to one, and not to mention there were some raiders taking pot shots at me from an old house while I'm fighting the Mercs. Can I do anything with the contract I picked up from the dead Mercs?

Heh, having been to DC, I assure you it's just as easy to get lost in a strange-non-charred out city. Their attention to detail and the authenticism they used in recreating the downtown area is AMAZING. Even the metro stations look right.

Man, I've put way too many hours into this game, and I still haven't explored a majority of the map. I don't know how people have even beaten it already, though I don't have a lot of free time, and am also crippled with the need to explore everything I come across.

And from what I can tell, I think my problem with energy weapons is just based on my skills. I've noticed a few discrepancies with damage reported by certain weapons. i.e.:
Someone said Lincoln's repeater does 50 damage when you get it, but mine only does like 38 (fully repaired), so I must have gotten it earlier than they did (lower small gun skill).
Same thing probably applies to energy weapons, with people saying how awesome they are, and seeing them do shit for damage in my game.

Probably old news for most everybody, but I thought the skill crap only applied to accuracy and such, and that the damage was linked solely to the gun itself. Whoops.

Only all the damn time. My dude's a paladin right now, and someone wants me dead really bad. I've only picked up one contract, but I'm hoping I can find out more about whoever is hiring those assholes. I've had to fight my way through probably around a dozen merc ambushes, and they just keep sending more people for me to kill.

    Righteous judgement awaits.

e: I think what really sells the immersion for me is that inventory items don't flash, or glow, or any of that nonsense to clue you in on where they are. If you want to find ammo or health, you've really gotta scrounge around for it. For once I'm not exploring every inch of a dungeon just to map it all out, but I actually have to do it just to survive.

I ran into some right outside the Super Duper Mart. They were pretty easy since I was at a low level, and I got some awesome armor out of the deal. I don't think you can do anything with the contract.

When I was playing earlier, I ran into a more SERIOUS camp of them on the southern edge of the map. All armed with laser rifles and assault rifles. But that wasn't the worst part, they had a securibot with them! Damn thing killed me with a missile.

There are so many guns lying around or dropped from corpses I generally repair them together as i go to save weight and then sell them all once i'm full, even with my completely minimized barter skill I generally make well over 1000 per run. Not sure about the weight of the Recon armor, but I think if it's heavy it makes more noise. This may also apply to the total weight you're carrying. i.e. if you're carrying 250 lbs of equipment, you're going to step louder than if you're carrying 150.

I've been decently successful in sneaking, in any case.

Tenpenny's right hand man, the guy who gives you the quest/item to blow up Megaton.
He's apparently so evil that you get good karma for killing him, wheras taking stuff from his apartment after results in doubleplusungood karma.

The moral? Murder can be for a good cause sometimes, but NEVER fuck with another man's items, damn it!

Oh god, tell me where that fucker is, please. Can you find him again if you don't nuke Megaton? I told him I would, then used the device to deactivate the bomb, and
the fucker's been sending Talon Mercs after my ass all game.
I want to introduce him to the business end of a plasma rifle.

I make most of my money from two methods:
selling Scrap metal to the waterworks guy in Megaton and Pre-War books to the Brotherhood chick in the library.

he's not the one who sends the mercs after you, i shot him in the face the first time I saw him and they came anyway

    anyway tenpenny tower quest spoilers
letting in those ghouls to kill those stuck up fuckers was the most satisifying moment of the game so far

God this game is so fantastic, every time I fire it up I play for at least 2-3 hours

Heh... light weight. I think the minimum I've put in in a single session is 6 hours.

For caps, when you're first starting out, make sure you grab and sell and valuable junk that you come across (I usually keep at least one of each, though, just in case). Just go by a weight/value ratio. If something weighs 1lb but is worth 20 caps, take it with and sell it.

It takes time, but it helps get some extra money. Also look for people that buy certain items at a special price like:
The guy in Megaton who gives you 10 caps for every piece of scrap metal you bring him, or the ghoul who pays you 30 (if you succeed in speech) for each box of Sugar Bombs.
Also, use the pipboy light and search every area as best you can. Lots of ammo and health is hiding in little nooks, and this will help save you money, as opposed to buying them. I've said it before, but I've never spent a single cap on ammo or health, and I've got at least 300 bullets for almost every gun I own (disregarding mini-nukes and missles), about 60-odd stimpacks, dozens of every type of drug, etc. Shit isn't easy to find, but if you put in the effort you'll be rewarded.

Where the hell is this guy after you repair his leaks? I have a lot of the stuff, but cannot find him ANYWHERE in megaton now. I've even waited in the waterworks 1 hour at a time for 24 hours and not seen him.

So I kind of changed my tactics:
    Early spoilers:
Blew Megaton the fuck up, then went all rambo on Tenpenny Tower, killing all guards and taking their guns. Now I'm gonna do the quest where I let the ghouls into Tenpenny Tower, that will be... interesting, as everybody is dead already :P

Also, the bazillion Assault Rifles I have now make this game a lot easier.

    He sometimes goes to Moriarty's.

Still though, does anyone know if skills are out of 300 or 100?

This cannot be overstated. I've found books under beds and frag grenades lying between two desks on the floor. You have to look EVERYWHERE.

You normally catch him at moriarty's then? I'll wait there for a day I guess to see what time he comes in. I don't see him when I randomly stop by on my trips to sell/store stuff. Do you have a particular time of day you notice him there?

I found ammo conservation and overall killing power increase greatly once I got a recruit.

When I was in the Jefferson Memorial a Super Mutant swung his nail board at my head and I countered it with my shiskabab. He died, his nail board getting stuck in the wall. I know it was a glitch but it was so awesome.

Has anyone been to the Chrisylis Building yet? It's on the way to Three Dog's place. I found so many caps and ammunition in there I felt Christmas came early. It's a Super Mutant stronghold so tread lightly.
