Oh my god Thanksgiving is so close!

I only really just realized it. Pumpkin Pie!

    MMMMmmmmmmmm

[edit] But unfortunately, I won't get Thanksgiving... I just realized that, too. We can't afford a real dinner...

I remain unconvinced that taking away gun-ownership rights would decrease the number of idiots who do stupid shit that kills people. If someone can't be trusted with a dangerous machine the solution is to not give that person access to any dangerous machines, not to take all the dangerous machines away from everyone.

Honestly I'm not really strongly anti-gun, but I guess there are times (like this article) when the sheer fuckedupness of it makes me wish that something could be done.

It's kind of like how I am technically against the death penalty in that most of the time it's applied unfairly and such, but there are some situations where the crimes someone does are so fucked up that they need to punished somehow above and beyond the normal punishments.

I guess it's just emotional salience, which doesn't necessarily make good laws.

I don't think you could do anything to NASCAR that would make it interesting to me without making it fundamentally not NASCAR. Even NASCAR road-races I look at and think "wow, this would be so much more exciting if they were using cars designed for it instead of cars designed to go really fast and turn left periodically".

I think I find the theory of NASCAR much more interesting than the actual races. Ultimately it comes down to refining a series of variables to tweak a little more speed out of your team's car than any of the others. The job of the driver is basically to be as consistent as possible. If ever there was a sport suited to robots, NASCAR would be it.

That's what I mean about the telemetry. I think I'd enjoy it more as entertainment if the initial setup of the cars was public and data like g-force, tyre wear, fuel consumption and engine data was available in real time, so that you could see the effects of the setup and changing variables on the race performance of the cars.

That's pretty cool, but something tells me the number of people who feel similar to you about NASCAR is very small.

I think the answer here might be that a waiting period is not really enough. I think there might be some merit to requiring gun owners to submit to psychological assessment, at least the first time they buy a weapon.

FWIW this is roughly the system in the UK if you want a license for a shotgun. You need to get your doctor to vouch for your mental stability, and they can request a full assessment if they think it's necessary.

You can have some, I think pistols/rifles are restricted to .22, and you can own a shotgun. You need a "firearms certficate" for each firearm:

To obtain a firearm certificate, the police must be convinced that a person has "good reason" to own each gun, and that they can be trusted with it "without danger to the public safety or to the peace". Under Home Office guidelines, gun licenses are only issued if a person has legitimate sporting or work-related reasons for owning a gun. Since 1946, self-defence has not been considered a valid reason to own a gun. The current licensing procedure involves: positive verification of identity, two referees of verifiably good character who have known the applicant for at least two years (and who may themselves be interviewed and/or investigated as part of the certification), approval of the application by the applicant's own family doctor, an inspection of the premises and cabinet where guns will be kept and a face-to-face interview by a Firearms Enquiry Officer (FEO) also known as a Firearms Liaison Officer (FLO). A thorough background check of the applicant is then made by Special Branch on behalf of the firearms licensing department. Only when all these stages have been satisfactorily completed will a license be issued.

    Quite possibly.

All I learned at the time was that it is possible to fit a person into a standard size cricket kit bag and zip it up. (Not me, thankfully).
