I would be ashamed to pull that book (with that cover) out of my bag and read it in full public view.

fuzzball you're being retarded about this

that cover sucks complete ass and no one would ever want to own it because it is so bad

I would enjoy reading that book less if every time I picked it up I saw that cover, because each time I would think "shit, this cover sucks ass. why do I own this book? am I some kind of retard who pretends not to notice shit like this?"

so I would be willing to pay more for another version without such a sucky-ass cover so that I would not have to have that experience

Not every photo cover is inferior to every non-photo cover, though.

There are lots of photo covers that are better than their pre-movie alternatives, but people still hate them.

    That's silly.

Why? Because I don't see how a pulp comic covered in cotton-candy vomit is better than the sexiest actor/rapper to ever star in his own coming-of-age sitcom? Or do you just not like black people on your stuff?

I have the LotR paperback set from the sixties where each book's cover is 1/3 of a triptych.

    It is kind of neat.

I have the crappy elementary school book fair edition. They're about worn out and RotK got flooded. Part of the edge is dark and it smells all musty. I'll throw them out and buy new copies eventually. It'll probably be the omnibus, because I like omnibuses. They're just so convenient.

Interesting story, the movie versions with the photos of the actors were a far superior design to the book fair edition.

no one ever said all movie editions are inferior to non-movie editions. you're acting as though someone did because it's easier to argue against, but yeah, no one ever said that. I own a perfectly tasteful movie edition copy of No Country For Old Men, in fact. but generally, movie edition covers are shit, so saying you generally prefer not to buy the "NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THIS CELEBRITY" version is perfectly legitimate. but you're not really worth arguing with anyway, so, following fari's lead, I won't.

Pulp comic covers are great when they're not coated in cotton-candy vomit.

If you're going to go garish, you have to go colorful. Bright pink monotone just looks tacky, and having the original colors right over top of it just draws more attention to it.

I've heard lots of people say that in the past. I asked why people feel that way. Faricrazy got all defensive.

There's nothing wrong with photo covers. The material is still the same, and they aren't always the inferior design. If poorly designed covers is what bothers you, complain about poorly designed covers. You'll have a hard time finding a cheap paperback without one, though.

The closest thing to a decent reason I've ever seen or heard someone come up with is that it suggests you're reading the book because of the movie, and that's just silly.

I really like the whole "argueargueargue I'm not argueing" thing. It makes a whole lot of sense.

Will Smith runs around being awesome, there's a sad dying dog scene, his kid is cute, and shit asplodes.

I liked the connection between the dog and his kid. Explicit enough that you don't have to explain it to the moron watching it with you, but they don't beat you over the head with it. Bravo.

i have an interesting hitchhiker's guide set

it's a movie tie-in box set from england that somehow made it's way (new, it was shrink-wrapped) to a border's outlet in a mall in jersey. it cost four dollars.

    20081103-bfybwr4d4s4pdxa1qdrqrsfpj4.jpg

    20081103-89caqkamx168mxph98kdxk155u.jpg

the graphics aren't garish and as you can see the other four books have their original covers

and the movie book actually has a section with interviews and cool history behind the movie

I got that one because it was a couple bucks cheaper than the less complete paperback omnibus sitting next to it.

It's nice, but they went all cheap on the gilding. It's gunky and grainy and rubs off real easy, but it was cheap and I didn't buy it for the gilding.

I love how the book 'I, Robot' just has a giant picture of will smith on the front, despite the fact that the movie is different from the book, and smiths character was never in the book to begin with.

Perhaps you don't understand just how badly Will Smith ruins everything.

I'm actually a fan of will smith, I like the cut of his jib.

But yeah the movie version of I, Robot was pretty much terrible.

I'm sorry I can't hear you over how much this movie sucked
