[D&D 3.5e] Warrior/Rogue Character suggestions

edited November 2008 in Critical Failures
In my current campaign I'm bringing in a new character at level 11. Given what is going on in the campaign the existing party will be picking up my new character in a town and going (back) into the underdark.

I'm looking to possibly fill two roles with the character:

1) Ability to scout for the party (high spot/listen & trap detection)
2) Need to dish out some decent damage as well as take some decent damage.

I'm currently thinking about some sort of fighter/rogue combination but I'm horrible when it comes to designing inventive characters, especially prestige classes. Can anyone suggest some decent prestige classes?

Any race is fine.
Alignment needs to be on the Lawful, good, or neutral side of things

Other party members right now (off the top of my head):

Knight/Paladin
Cleric (with specialized prestige class)
Barbarian/Cleric
Ranger/OBI
Wizard type (that player is also introducing a new character)

You definantly need to have some rogue in there, you need the unlocking and trap detection.
Fighter/Rogue sounds right for what you need for sure, so you'll need High Dex, Str, and Con
Cleave/Improved Initiative/Power Attack/Weapon Focus/Weapon Specialization/etc... might be nice, Skills should be spot, listen, Search, tumble(depends on DM), etc...

Weapon can be anywhere from Dagger to Two Handed sword

Armour should be light if you want sneak attack, heavy in any other case

    Ranged - Long Bow

Start your characters levels as a Fighter till about 6-7 then Rogue 6 (or 7)-11

    Thats what I'd do

Prestige might not be what you're looking for in this campaign, I would keep the levels in this

Check out the factotum base class from Dungeonscape; as a 1 level dip, it makes an awesome boost for a rogue build. You get:

    -All martial weapon proficiencies
    -All skills as class skills
    -d8 for a Hit Die
-Inspiration points per encounter (kinda like a limited focus of Action Points from Eberron Campaign Setting)

A 3 level dip gets you the ability to sub your INT modifier for STR and DEX checks as necessary. With the Able Learner feat from Races of Destiny, you can buy any skill or cross-class skill at 1 point per rank no matter how you multiclass.

Also, a few levels of the scout base class and the Swift Ambusher feat from Complete Scoundrel give you stacking abilities with your scout and rogue levels for ambush, sneak attack and AC bonuses.

Fiddle with those 3 classes for a bit and you have the ultimate dungeon skill monkey/sneak attack/flanker.

It's something that I've been dicking around with for a bit now. I call it "The Ultimate Generalist Build." Scout and Rogue stack with Swift Ambusher for tremendous flexibility in combat and up at the front finding all the nasty traps and sweet, sweet ambushing opportunities. The level of factotum is just gravy on top to give you out of combat "face" abilities if you don't have one. Only problem is, you tend to be short on skill points, but with a few levels of factotum beyond the first, you can boost skills in a crunch.

For prestige classes, exemplar and chameleon are the best way to go. Exemplar for skills boost and chameleon for even more of a versatile build. The upper levels of chameleon are just sick for their capabilities to handle combat and social role-playing.

I'm admittedly out of practice, but doesn't Weapon Specialization require 4 levels of fighter, not just a fighter level and +4 AB?

Willing to bet that the homebrew covers that, right?

Also, since you're starting at a decently high level, may I suggest a look at the Swordsage and Warblade? The Bo9S classes are much better at keeping up with the casters at that point than the base melee classes, and you get to add half your total class levels to your initiator level, so even a dip gives you major mojo. Unfortunately, neither has Spot as a class skill, but the Swordsage gets Hide, Move Silently and Listen.

For Weapon Spec, you only have to be a Fighter, and character level 4 W00T!

I second this. Couple it with the Factorum build from earlier and you can pump all your rogue skills while still being sicknasty.

You can throw people jujitsu style, jump around tearing them apart with blades in each hand, initiate fire like a warrior-mage, or specialize in shadow stuff to be even more rogue like!

You'll have a ton more fun at the table too.

How much help can we really be if your group doesn't play by the rules?

It's hard to give real advice when you've got house rules that we don't know about.

In 3.5, it requires four levels of Fighter.
