Uhhhhh, this is gonna sound weird... but I'm looking for some Chinese Rap. I don't really care if it's good or not, as long as its in Mandarin and in rap form. Anyone know any good groups?

LMF (stands for Lazy Mother Fucker)

and Jin's cantonese album titled abc.

    LMF's better but they disbanded.

Cool! I already found some info on LMF, though they seem to sing in Cantonese.... but it's all good!

Sorry I could've sworn you wrote not in Mandarin. I'm not all that aware of Mandarin Hip-Hop, at least not anything authentic and not an "urban" gimmick of some pop model (ie edison chen's music)

    I'm sure it exists, though.

You might try listening to some Jay Chou stuff.

Jay Chou is pretty pop, although admittedly some of his songs ('renzhe' comes to mind) are close to rap.

When I was in shanghai 4 years ago I picked up an album off the street that said 'shanghai rap' on it. It has stuff by 'Mild Wild Child', 'SRC', and '喷嘭'. It's in 'Shanghai-ese' which isn't quite mandarin but pretty close.

The official title of the album is: '有啥讲啥@上;海'

While here, anyone know any catchy Mandarin pop artists? Our teachers gave us some Richie Ren but that's all I know right now.

For male singers, try 王力宏,周杰倫,五月天。 They are among the more popular male pop artists in Taiwan these days. There are lots of decent female singers as well, but I always forget their names.

For alt-rock, check out 張震嶽 and 1979.

Life's a struggle. Too bad he only made this one song.

I'm studying Chinese. As I did with Japanese I'll listen to rap on my idle time. My logic is, if my ear is sharp enough to follow rap, it can follow anything (also, I love rap and hip hop!). Though, Japanese doesn't have the amount of tonal inflections Chinese has... maybe this time it won't be so easy.

Has anyone here studied Chinese (any dialect) before? How'd you go about doing it? Any book or tape recomendation is appreciated.

    Chinese scares me sometimes.

Shanghainese is nowhere remotely close to Mandarin, FYI.

And to respond to the above, I spoke Cantonese as my first language (born in Hong Kong etc) and later learned Mandarin and English, though my Mandarin only got strong when I lived in Beijing for the end of high school and in the past few years that I've been working in Shanghai. (Interim years were spent in other countries.)

Chinese Pod is a good source, look into it (Google will help). Nothing will beat immersion and exposure, though. Consider doing a year in China.

Oh and Jay Chou's lyrics are entirely too complicated for any early Mandarin speaker, as least from what I've heard of his stuff. And fuck if I don't hate 五月天 with a goddamn passion.

    1979 is fucking great though.

Where are you studying, for how long now, and what do you plan to do with it? I'd say your best bet is to take one of the many full scholarships available to go to study in China or Taiwan for a year.

I'll second the Chinese Pod for learning Chinese. You have to pay for the subscription but it's certainly worth it, especially if you commute and can listen to MP3s in the car. I've been using music too which is why I asked for the pop since it often has relatively simple language.

And are you trying to learn to read as well? Because if you are, write. Lots.

I took a basic Mandarin course, I've been waiting for schools to offer anything beyond Mandarin 1, but it seems people are not that interested. I'm basically doing this on my own now. AS for the scholarships, I'm seriously considering doing that, but I worked my ass off to get the job I have now and I have to weigh if it's worth dropping to go to China for a year.

I guess you can't have two cool things at the same time... :( Job or China.

See, my job is to learn Chinese. It's pretty sweet. Though most people don't like the whole being part of the military part.

You know, it's not impossible to get a job IN China, but I'm not sure how old you are.

All of my friends (including myself) are foreigners in passport and most of them spoke little to no Chinese prior to coming here. If you've got the right experience you can get a decent-paying job and companies usually sponsor people with private tutoring lessons.

Throwing yourself into the environment is probably the easiest way to learn the language, I tell you what.

I looked into getting a job in China, but I couldn't really find anything other than upper level management and English teaching. Could you recommend a place to look? My wife is Chinese and we'd both like to live in China for a time.

You're in luck: I'm a headhunter. :D I can't help you directly, but I know where to look.

First thing I need to know is how old you are and what qualifications you have.
