LG 42' LCD HDTV aspect ratio issue

I just had my cable box replaced, and the aspect ratio for non-HDTV channels is displaying at 16:9 rather than 4:3, so everything looks stretched horizontally. I've tried resetting the aspect ratio to "Set by program", which should auto-detect whether or not a program is being broadcast as an HD program or SD program, but it doesn't appear to be working.

The new cable box itself seems to have some issues as it's reset itself a couple of times already. Is it possible that the box isn't sending whatever info the TV's aspect auto-detect mechanism needs? Because it was working fine before the box swap, and the TV in my room (also an LG, and connected to a similar box as the living room TV) works fine with the aspect ratio set to "Set by program."

It could be that your cable box is set to output in only the 16:9 mode. This is an option on my cable box as well as my tv. Also, instead of being the button labeled "source" which somewhat makes sense, it's the # key that switches between the two.

Yup, the problem was something similar to that. There was a setting with the box associated with how to handle 4:3 programming. It was set to stretch.
