best laptop for a really really dumb person

I am having major issues with my mom,

She is a mac laptop user. She only uses it for a calander, phonebook, e-mail, word documents, internet, music, and pictures.

She is the kind of person that is so stupid that she knowingly responds to spam e-mail thinking she could get a deal. I am pretty sure she has sent off her financial information to people that should NOT have it. She has managed in the past to also lose all of her photos by deleting them then being mad at me for not telling her that delete means delete. In short she is continually clueless and forgetful when it comes to using a computer, she needs a permanent undo button and it needs to be the largest button.

So the question is, what is a good laptop that has the idiotproofing non virus stuff of a apple product.. that is not necessarily an apple product?

It can be apple but i have to sell her on buying apple again as she manages to break her current laptop once every 3 months thus she kinda has issues with them. Any other type would work as well. Also cheap would be awesome.

Followup question: is there a simple way to have/teach someone like my mom to use a backup harddrive so she cant lose all of her files again? I am looking for personal experience on this one.

(if all else fails, this is my venting post for having to help someone that has issues with the classic question "is your power cord plugged in?")

Honestly, if she can fuckup a Mac that badly, it's going to be just as easier, if not easier to fuck up any Windows laptop. Sounds like she could use Apple's ProCare service for some hands-on training.

Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust

An Eee? There is a version of Ubuntu that is out there for it which has a similar simple interface as the original Xandros, and you could possibly set up some software to backup to an external every night. Thunderbird should block spam, and I doubt she would pick up a virus anywho.

If you're set on Apple then set time Machine for her Photos. Vista has Shadow Copy. If you want to Vista can be locked down pretty well if you don't give her an Admin account or passwords. Vista's UAC and IE's protected mode are pretty good.

Eee might work, just don't go into advanced desktop mode ever. Which is fine because you need to know what you're doing to get advanced desktop mode.

She just has to be able to hit the big buttons. And not actively try to fuck things up.

And yeah, just set up an automated backup.

    Things you could do:

    1. set her up a backup drive like has already been suggested. Time machine is almost completely fool proof.
    2. set her up on a standard account with yourself as the admin.
    3. is she using iphoto for photos? I say this because if she is, and she's managed to delete them she has not only clicked delete but also emptied the trash in the application itself (iphoto, and all ilife apps have their own trash separate from the main one, so they may even still be there).
    4. write an faq and print it over her desktop image.

    My suggestion:

Get her a new Apple laptop with a One-to-One membership. That way she can learn how to not fuck up her computer.
