I want to play FF7, how do I do it, LEGALLY!

I want to play Final Fantasy VII, the first RPG I ever played. How do I go about this?

This question is summing up what will be a big problem for those of us who haven't played those PSone and PS2 classics that made Sony win the last generation. Now that Sony has stopped producing backwards compatible PS3's and this feature is quite wonkey on the 360, a serious discussion must be had. Let this thread be about how we can play these great games as quickly as possible.
I should not have to recite the forum rules but anyone mentioning a forbidden technique will get what they have coming. If you think it might get you jailed or banned for mentioning something questionable, don't mention it at all.

The PS3 can play all PS1 games.

EDIT: Regardless of the SKU you buy.

If you have the disc, then there's nothing illegal about using emulators.

EDIT: Regardless of the SKU you buy.

Eh, what? There were only three SKUs that could play PS2 games. 60 gig played all of them, 80 gig was software emulation, and the MGS4 PS3 was software emulation.

All PS3s can play PS1 games. PS1 is solely software emulation.

It's the PS2 hardware emulation problem that is what confuses people about PS3 SKUs.

Pretty much and if you have the software and your console broke, then you need to buy a new console like any system. Get a PS2 =P. Or buy the PC version of FF7.

But then the question becomes memory. Doesn't matter to me though, played through MGS without saving. Shitty score but fun none the less.

You have to have a PS1 BIOS image though. Acquiring it legally would require you to own the system. And if that's the case then you might as well play it on that.

FF7 is one of the easier PS1 games to find in used games shops. PS1s and PS2s are both dirt-cheap and easy to find. Really, it's not a problem at all. :P

Hell, you could wait for the PS3 remake too, if you feel like waiting a few years.

But isn't there an issue with trying to run that game on an XP machine? I swear I had problems getting it to run, and that's why I never wound up playing the PC version.

On that note, anyone know if the PC version is Vista compatible at all, or if there is a patch available?

No, and I wouldn't wait for it, because voice acting and Aerittth.

If you reaaally want it, shell out on amazon, I guess. I got it for 7 bucks for PC, and 9.99 for ps1 at walmart back around 2001, though, because I'm awesome like that.

They've voice acted most of the characters already between Advent Children and Kingdom Hearts.

What I'm more trying to say is, a remake isn't the same thing. And while lord knows FF7 could use a graphic update, the voices won't be the way you thought they'd sound, and the graphic style will be slightly changed.

I'd buy it, for sure, but it'd be something new.

If they threw in that stuff from Crisis Core, though, I'd rage, even though I enjoyed it.

Eh FF7 PC had a few issues that made it slightly less awesome than the PS1 version. When I played it all timers were inexplicably slowed. So, for that one weapon that you're supposed to kill in 10 minutes or have the underwater materia, I ended up being able to leisurely kill him over ~40 minutes using no materia.

Back in the day, the game would lock up on every CGI cutscene. I'd have to open and close the tray a dozen times and pray that it loaded.

Also, all the minigames had looooow framerates. The game proper ran fine, though. I ditched the PC version when I got a ps2. A mistake, in hindsight.

    Man, what an awesome game.

I thought the voices in Kingdom Hearts and Advent Children were, for the most point, fairly decent.

Assuming you use the right patch, FFVII runs a treat under XP. No slowdown at all - the opposite, in fact! The minigames (for me, at least) run at about 300% speed, which adds a nice layer of challenge to the bike escape. Everything else runs fine, although they still did a horrible job upscaling the backgrounds.

Yeah. FF7 PC has a fucking huge fan community. If you don't like the 'chibi' field models, for example, you can replace everyone in the game with a realistic model like the battle models, like FF8, 9 and 10. When I get back from where I've gotta go I'll dig up and repost my "awesome post of FF7 PC mods".

I personally prefer emulation even though I own a PS1, 2 and 3. (yes I know the later PS2 models and the PS3 uses software emulation)

With emulation you can run all the 3D at ridiculously high resolution with texture filtering, for example.. play FF7 on a PS3 and then play it on one of the popular pc PS1 emulators. No contest, the pc emulated version looks miles better.

The only problem with the pc route though is you'll need a playstation joypad adapter (which I've got) and you'll need to tweak the emulator config for the first time to get it playing how you want which can be a bit daunting the first time.

The pipe is very clearly full of awesome.

ED : and you can get $50 worth of Goozex points for that copy of Final Fantasy VII PS1. The quality doesn't matter, though obviously a case and manual will be easier to move. I lost the manual and successfully traded it, and I wouldn't have gotten nearly as much on eBay. Especially since the case was the green-band GH version.

The project has fallen on two very awesome Baltic programmers, Akari and G. I'm not "the leader guy" anymore, but still have the keys to the project. I'm more in charge of the wiki that keeps all the information about how the engine works now.
