So, I recently got my hands on Advance Guardian Heroes, for the GBA. It kicks ass.
I also watched some of those Paul Robertson videos. You know, the crazy sprite animation ones that are basically crack applied to videogame stylings quite liberally, with the pregnant-zombie-women-giving-birth-to-baby-zombies-Aliens-style shenanigans and whatnot? It kindled a lust for bashing skulls in.
Hence, here we are, with a beat-em-up thread. Discuss epic ones, discuss epic failures. Discuss ALL!
Any suggestions on how to not get my ass kicked so badly in AGH, for starters? I get slaughtered half the time.
What's that ringing? Ting-ting-a-linging in my head~? Oh, you're always there, making me whole. You're always waiting up for me. You're my first kiss, ever so pure, and ever so defiling, once lost, can never be the same. Fuck me. Violate me. Deny me.
Ninja Gaiden isn't a beat em up. It's also... shit.
Anyway, God hand is indeed the best example of the genre in recent years. It's everything that was awesome about final fight and streets of rage (beating transexual hookers with pieces of 2 by 4 for example) and then taking that and multiplying it by 10.
The thread title reminds me of an awesome and overlooked snes beat em up. Ninja Warriors (aka Ninja Warriors again) you play a very un-ninja like gigantic robot (or another character but the other ones suck in comparison) and you can pick up enemies and do the usual throws as well as BREAKING THEM OVER YOUR KNEE. Which looks obscenely badass.
I skimmed and saw no mention of The Warriors which is my fav. Immersive and unique atmosphere combined with an intuitive and kind of deep combat. It really took me by surprise.

I gave it the mad props it deserves.
It's funny as well, it's like the only Rockstar game I like.

And you even mentioned co-op which I forgot. Man I need to play that game again.
You guys are forgetting River City Ransom.
Viewtiful Joe is really really fun, until you get to the five bosses in a row and then fight the fire lion guy. I never got past that. And because I never beat the first game, I haven't allowed myself to buy the second.
So The Warriors game is actually good? I'll have to pick that up some day.
Has Robertson done anything else like the 2006 movie? There was the thing with rockstar monster killer, but everything else he has done is weird. Cutesy gorey vaguely loli weird stuff.
I like how the difficulty is reasonable in a sense that you really could beat it on just a single quarter, even if all four players stayed alive (it's a lot harder with additional players). It's not impossible for a lot of beat 'em ups but this one just seemed a lot better about avoiding cheap AI tactics.
When I was about 11 or so, I thought that one Die Hard beat em up was totally awesome. I spent so much money on that at the arcade. The qte-esque stuff as you ran to the next room was so awesome. And you could beat the shit out of dudes with a great big TV. I never beat it or anything, but it was awesome.
I tried to play it a few years ago, and man that shit looked terrible.
Apparently there was a beat em up with Captain Commando in it, along with a baby in a mecha suit and a ninja. Was that a good game?

I liked it. Solid Capcom beat'em-up so its good. Just wish they would do more with the character. Speaking of capcom... their licensed beat'em ups are awesome. D&D and AvP.

FUCK YES. I have NEVER heard anyone else mention Ninja Warriors. It is one of my favorite damn games EVER, and I would kill a man for a modern remake. Keep it pure-2D, throw in more moves, a more elaborate comboing system(see most modern beat-em-ups and their setups for this), some kind of weapon switching/upgrading setup....Mmmm....
Speaking of which, anyone know of any games like that, where it's pure-2D(as opposed to also having vertical movement) and you have a permanent, upgradable arsenal(like in Ninja Gaiden and DMC)?
If you haven't picked up "The Red Star" for ps2... well you should. Really great hybrid beatemup. There is technically an Xbox version but was never officially released.
Zombie Revenge was another under appreciated game. Sega put out some fantastic 3D brawlers during the Dreamcast era. Die Hard Arcade was really awesome too. I don't remember if Dynamite Cop (sequel) was any good.
There are way too many good old 2D brawlers to mention. Any of the CPSI/II Capcom games are great. Aliens vs Predator, the D&D ones and Cadillac and Dinosaurs were my favorites. Neo Geo had a lot of mediocre brawlers but one outstanding one called Sengoku 3. Came out at the tail end of the Neo Life span. Great combo system, ton of air juggles and more technical approaches to combat made it really worthwhile.
Edit: The MK VS DC thread reminded me of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. The only worthwhile Mortal Kombat game since MK3.

Though honestly, I thought that the most recent one (Otome Crisis) was pretty weak.
I never asked for this!
And, I suppose, Streets of Rage and Bad Dudes. Also, TMNT 2.
It nailed how to do 2 player coop beat 'em up with semi-open levels, with weapons, decent controls/combat, and tonnes of bonus stuff.
The problem with God Hand is that it's just a game about punching people.
Its like the abusive husband you still love and always go back to.

I couldn't believe it when I saw it!
That art style makes me want to vomit.
They're like 90% eyeballs.
something like final fight that lets me throw garbage cans (and bad guys) with nice euphoria physics = win.
someone make this game now.
Like toribash + streets of rage + castle crashers for the loose RPG feeling.
go. I'm sure XNA could make something like this? I'm inspired now...
let's create the ultimate beat em up.

Could someone link more Robertson videos? This is the only one I ever seen:
Pirate Babys Cabana Battle Street Fight 2006 - 12 min - Apr 21, 2006
This Ninja Warriors game looks kind of fun

Castle Crashers looks really awesome in every way, but I do not have a 360. Maybe some day.
It's great, and proof that Movie tie-ins can be awesome too.
Ill throw in Guardian Heroes, TMNT - Turtles in Time and Golden Axe (original not the abomination that was just released)
Tumblr
You should grab Kings of Power 4 Billion% too

i found it on game trailers. man what in the hell
so wrong and weird and yet so asskickingly awesome
i wish someone would make a wh40k beatem up somehow.
Final Fight
TMNT 4 (Turtles in Time)
There was also some Ninja game for PSX that was pretty badass, don't remember what it was called, though.
Edit: It was called Ninja: Shadow of Darkness.
I tried to play it a few years ago, and man that shit looked terrible.

that game looks neat, but there is no way I will ever play it, which is a real shame.
