What are some decent 2d brawlers which are easily, legally obtained?
There're the classics, like River City Ransom and Double Dragon on the NES, and Streets of Rage on the Genesis. I think they can all be found on the Virtual Console, but I'm not sure when it comes to Double Dragon.
What are some decent 2d brawlers which are easily, legally obtained?
VC - TMNT, River City Ransom, Final Fight, Streets of Rage I/III, Golden Axe II, Ninja Combat, Burning Fight
XBLA - Castle Crashers, TMNT, Streets of Rage II
Various Compilations like
Sega Genesis Collection has Golden Axe I-III.
SNK Arcade Classics Vol 1 has Burning Fight, Sengoku I (meh games)
Capcom Classics I/II both have Bionic Commando
Capcom Classics Reloaded have Bionic Commando, King of Dragons, Knights of the Round
I'd take a look at Gametap or VC/XBLA stores for your best bets.
Beating the shit out of hoodlums is fun. I just bought Rodan Wing or something in the secret shop in the tunnel. Whipping stuff at punks and knocking them flat! Hot damn. (rcr)
Woo, managed to beat AGH on easy. Now to go back in and see if I can do it on normal.
I'm gonna get my ass kicked. Aren't I?
I wish there were a difficulty between Easy, which is too easy, and Medium, which is where I can't get past the raft level with hovering droids shooting at you, because I get tired of re-trying it. I loved it when I played it on GBA, but got frustrated with the difficulty.
If anyone is still quietly wondering if The Warriors is good, I'd like to stress that it is super awesome.
Everyone has mentioned my favorites already. Cap America/Avengers, TMNT, Final Fight, Double Dragon, Castle Crashers are good.
I liked Knights of the Round, although there was nothing really different or unique about it. It's just the only coin-op game I ever actually beat in the arcade.
Beats of Rage is pretty awesome. It's a freeware beat 'em up designed to be a spiritual sequel to Streets of Rage III, using SNK characters.
The vanilla game is pretty standard (they did rip off SNK character sprites and a few backgrounds), but the beauty is in the engine itself. The BoR engine is ridiculously easy to mod, and has a native version or a port on DOS, Windows, Linux, PocketPC, AmigaOS, MorphOS, Dreamcast, PS2, PSP, Xbox, and GP2X/GP32.
Even though the majority of the mods released for it coontain stolen art and music, there is legitimate original content to be found. You just have to look hard, because for every person who takes the time to draw their own sprites and create theiir own music, there are thirty idiots who just make a game with Ryu and the music from Mortal Kombat 3.
For any budding beat 'em up creators though, it's pretty much the easiest way to create a decent, working game for free.
Also, if I remember right, the Japanese version of the Sega Genesis Collection had SoR I-III, but they were clipped from the US collection so it would have a Teen Rating. You could import the JPN version if you didn't want to wait for the PS3/360 collection.
The only "spiritual sequel" of SoR that I've really enjoyed is "Streets of Rage Remake," which combines and improves upon a lot of the content in the original 3 games. The team is currently working on a new version of it as well.
Advance GH was rather easy except for the final difficulty, which I could only beat with the last secret character. It's an okay game overall, but not nearly as impressive as its predecessor.
Unfortunately, the predecessor is on a console I do not own, that can be difficult to find, with most of its good titles being hard as fuck to find.
So...Shame I can't enjoy it.

I bought The Red Star at a pretty cheap price about a week ago. Finally decided to play it last night, only to notice that my PS2 had died at some stage. I don’t even know how or when, but I couldn’t do anything to get a response from it. God Hand is still lodged inside too. I tried to take it apart just to get it out but I don’t have a small enough screw driver.
I am not a happy camper. Heck, the reason I wanted to play my PS2 was because my 360 had another disk read error.
So, The Red Star. It’s probably a good game, and a nice addition to the beat-em-up genre. I wish I knew.

The switch wasn't in the off position, was it?

Come on now. I was flicking that thing like frantic, I even used different cords and plugged it into different sockets "just in case". It is dead.

Nope. No red light or in fact, any indication that there was still life in there. First thing I thought was “maybe the switch at the back is off”, since there was a chance my girlfriend could have turned it off or something.
But enough about my PS2. The reason God Hand was stuck in there is because it was the last game I finished. Took me a couple of years to finally get around to it (the final boss’s health bar put me off the first time, so I decided to go through it again), but it was well worth it. I’ve also enjoyed what I’ve played of Castle Crashers, although it’s been a mostly single player affair. My friends list is quite small, and living in Australia, it isn’t often that I’m playing it at the same time as anyone else.
You know, my roommate just got one for Saturn called Three Dirty Dwarves. I had never seen or heard of this before, and after watching him play, I was shocked to learn it was not a licensed game. It really, REALLY looks like one, with the exception that it doesn't suck.
You switch between three characters, who are all dirty dwarves. The cutscene at the beginning is poorly animated and lets you know that you will, at some point, be "saving children." He's played nearly to the end, as far as I can tell, and there have been no children, but plenty of awesome.
And how did we get this far with no mention of the old-school arcade X-Men with 6 players? Awesome quarter-muncher with a bunch of friends, and the bargaining over who had to be Dazzler was always amusing.
I had a game on the original Xbox called Spikeout: Battle Street. It was a 4-player 3D brawler (it did multiplayer either through splitscreen or Xbox Live) made by Sega.
It was extremely difficult, though. You could unlock pretty much every boss character (ultimately netting you over 50 characters if you unlocked everyone) but it was very difficult to do so. I think you had to beat them without getting hit and getting a big enough combo on them and then clear the rest of the stage to unlock them. I never beat the final stage in story mode.

I really enjoyed all of the Double Dragon games, but Super Double Dragon for the SNES was probably my favorite, if only because it allowed you to do something few other beat 'em ups let you do: reverse moves. Catch an opponent's punch (or kick possibly, I don't recall) and punish them with a reversal move. It was great, and I know of no games before or since that employed that particular mechanic. Made it nice to do something other than "mash this button to win".
That said, my favorite of the genre (and still one of my top 3 favorite games of all time) is River City Ransom.
I got Ninja Gaiden 2 in from Gamefly yesterday. Game has a lot of potential to be awesome but I can never see what the fuck I'm doing because the camera is fucking terrible.
I really dug the Castle Crashers demo but I heard it had technical issues so I've avoided buying it for now.
IS Splatterhouse any good? I hear about it mostly for the supposedly hilarious amounts of blood or something. Is the game itself decent?
I heard good things, but I've never played it myself.
Splatterhouse 2 for the Genesis is awesome. The main character moves somewhat sluggishly, but unlike some other Splatterhouse games the difficulty level isn't impossible, just challenging. If it's too hard you can give yourself more health per life and more lives in the options menu.
Enemies, levels and bosses are very varied and well drawn, it looks and plays more like an arcade game than a console game. Enemies and bosses are seriously gross and horrifying in looks, sound and tactics. After Streets of Rage 2 it's my favorite Genesis beat m up.
(Edit, its Double Dragon, but damn that still screen looks just like the subway from Renegade): Is that Renegade? I loved the 1st 2, the 3rd was a little... to crazy. I had them on my 128k speccy... also on the Master System I think but it sucked on that.
Double Dragon is like 400points on the XBLA btw, not seen it mentioned.
Streets of Rage 2 and Final Fight are my faves (I only have FF on the gba, I always really badly wanted it on the mega cd when I was young). Id love to see a Turtles game base on something like the Ninja Gaiden engine, complete with blood:P

It's a port of Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun: Bangai Ranto Hen so it's related to Renegade, yeah.

For a moment, I thought you meant the NES original. O_o
And The Red Star is probably the hardest beat-em-up I've ever played, mostly because it's half curtain fire shmup.

Cool man its been a long time since I thought about Renegade, loved that game back in the day!
I can't remember the name, but my favorite beat-em-up was on the Sega Genesis and you built robots. You could choose all kinds of things such as a multitude of legs and weapons and heads and more. Then you went through these levels, co-op included of course, and beat the shit out of other robots to unlock even more parts. I wouldn't mind a remake of that game on XBLA or PSN.
