Can anyone help? I'm lending my old PS2 to a friend so he can play all the JRPGs he missed out on. He's asked me if I could recommend any 2D platforming games on it for his wife.
I couldn't think of any!
So can anyone suggest any decent 2D platform games (or possibly 3D from a side on perspective like...was it Pandemonium?). No proper 3D platform games though, should just pretty much be run from left to right or right to left
Cheers guys!
::quick edit! As Willeth has suggested PS1 game suggestions are also most welcome.
Fucking limed so hard. The PS2 version is not only the best of the Anthology versions (fuck you Wii version for not supporting the Classic) but Metal Slug kicks all kinds of old-school pixelated ass.
PeregrineFalcon on
Looking for a DX:HR OnLive code for my kid brother.
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
Just picked up Heart of Darkness due to the suggestion made from a couple of PA'ers. Very oddworld'ish (if that's such a word) but fun ... but I'll also second Wild 9.
If Metal Slug isn't a platformer, then neither are Contra, Earthworm Jim, Gunstar Heroes, or hell, the entire Megaman series. Run-and-gun platformers are still platformers.

I thought of this, since it's claim to fame is being 2d and all, but there's not like, any platforms. You probably could get by with never jumping if you set your mind to it.

Earthworm Jim and maybe Megaman are the only ones in that list that I would consider platformers the rest are straight up 2d action games.

Oh god yes, Heart of Darkness! Eric Chahi's masterpiece, and so criminally overlooked.
Um, since PSX games are allowed, how come nobody has mentioned Castlevania: Symphony of the Night? I mean, I know it's available on XBLA now, but there's still a chance your friend hasn't played it, and it's, like, the best Castlevania game ever, not to mention possibly the best 2D exploratory platformer ever (and this is coming from a die-hard Metroid fan.)

The OP is in Europe.
PAL PSX Symphony is impossible to find.

I loved that game, yet I've never played a 2-d Oddworld. Maybe I'll get it for PC.

I completed Heart of Darkness about a year ago, I would pass it on to her but I don't know if I'm that cruel.
Not that the game is bad, far from it, it's utterly superb. It's just punishingly difficult.
Other suggestions have been noted and some hunted down Much appreciated.
Also I wouldn't class Metal Slug nor Gunstar Heroes as platformers. There are incredibly few occasions within Metal Slug where you die as a result of a messed up jump.

@gamefacts - Totally and utterly true gaming facts on the regular!
Klonoa 2. Totally underated awesome platformer, full of awesome.
AWESOME!
edit: woah beat
Final Fantasy XI -> Carbuncle - Samash
You could try out Viewtiful Joe, though you might not want to inflict that game on an unsuspecting victim.
2D platform games nowadays pretty much belong to the Nintendo DS.
Ahh yes, I forgot about 2D platformers on the PS1
Thanks for the suggestions so far people.

Also Viewtiful Joe. Come on, people.
Otherwise, yeah, even though they're 3D, the Ratchett & Clank games are all amazing.
Also, didn't Mega Man 8 come out for the PS1?
sketchyblargh / Steam! / Tumblr Prime
Skullmonkeyyyyyys!
Warning: Game contains best bonus level music you will ever hear.
I would say Viewtiful Joe stretches platformer a bit. I'd consider it more of a straight beat-em-up.
Also someone said Tomba! and even though it's impossible to find, let's compound that impossibility by adding Tomba! 2 as well.
Does Silhouette Mirage for the PS1 count? It's been a while since I played it, though, so I can't remember how much platforming it has.
I'll pass on your suggestions to them! Cheers.

Brown'd for being full of shit.
