For the record I bought an arcade holiday bundle a couple weeks ago and the disc drive is fucking LOUD. I'm 99% a solo PC gamer so it's my first encounter with a 360, but suffice it to say that if I hadn't read all the comments about 360 noise prior to buying one I would have thought it was broken.
Check to see if the drive tray cover (chrome/white plastic piece) is reverberating against the faceplate. That can often make it sound like an airplane engine. A piece of tape or fiddling with the faceplate can alleviate that portion of the noise.

You know, I need to try this—I never really though about it but it makes perfect sense. My drive occasionally gets stuck ejecting because the tray clips against the faceplate a bit. You may have just saved me a world of headaches!
So lets just say I own a 20GB HDD, and were interested in buying a 120GB (or maybe 60GB). How easy would it be to transfer all my data from the old to the new? I'd like to have most of my saved games.
Linksys WRT-54G or WRT-54GL, flash with DD-WRT. It'll run you about $50 for the G or $60 for the GL. It's worth the $10 for the GL if you ever plan to use it for any other purpose.
I figured that was the response. I have a WRT-54G, but I have version (6?) that has less room to get flashed, so I need the mini-version of DD-WRT. I'm also hesitant to do this, because my PS3 has terrible trouble communicating with the wireless router, and the 360 always gets set to NAT moderate when connecting to this router over wireless.
I'm left wondering if this WRT54G model is just stupid, or if my particular unit is stupid in its own unique way.
Are you sure port forwarding is set up correctly both on your main router and on the bridge?
And for this purpose, there's nothing wrong with the mini version of DD-WRT.

It's called a Transfer Kit.
Here is How To. (Some notes from the page: You can only do it once. You shouldn't use the new drive first or you'll lose anything saved on it.)
Here is How To Get It. (Some have stated success getting it on eBay or something, so it's up to you.)

Hang on. This is free?
Oh thank god. Between the games I've downloaded and my Rock Band DLC habit my 20GB is starting to feel cramped.
What about wireless? I have my Wii, PS3 and 360 all on the same stand, and I don't want to buy the stupid Microsoft Expensive-brand Wireless Adapter. Is there a router recommended for reflashing into a gamebridge? Otherwise, is there a gamebridge for < $100 and / or equipped with more than one ethernet jack?

Is this the method where you turn the Linksys into a wireless adapter? I already have a wireless router and my ps3 goes to that. I'd prefer to do the same with the 360, but would prefer something less than $100 if possible. I just want to verify that this is the way to use the Linksys instead of the MS branded adapter.

Yes. You flash it with DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com) or other similar custom firmware (I've heard good things about Tomato) so that you can configure the router to act as a client bridge, meaning that it connects to a wireless network and pipes it through its wired ports (where your 360 is plugged in).
Sorry for the thread necromancy, but I have a quick question - does anyone know if the free hard drive offer for the "Arcade" 360s is still available? I'd like to pick a system up for my brother's birthday, and I think the Arcade version would do what he'd want, short of the hard drive.
And I'd rather pay $30 instead of $100 extra, and spend the balance of that on games. :P
And not the Arcade unless there is a REALLY good, compelling reason for it.)
How about getting an Arcade+120gig HD for $350? Or getting an Arcade plus 60gig HD + 3 free months of Live for $300?
Right now, getting an Arcade plus whatever HD you want is actually the better deal for most people.
This.
And if you're really cheap, an Arcade plus a 20gb refurb HD is only $220.
Be known that if you're referring to the pack that Microsoft offers for the NXE update, I'm fairly sure that's for existing arcade units, not any new purchases.
Let it be known that the infamous "Jasper" chip was found to be in the Arcade console "only" (there are some claims to exceptions, no idea if those people ever proved it). People discovered it because the holiday bundles that came out AFTER the "two free games" ones have 256 MB built-in memory (instead of a memory unit) so they suspected (and then confirmed) the bigger hardware changes.
I bought a 360 the day after Christmas. Bought the Arcade, Live starter pack, DVD remote, GTA IV, and Gears of Wars 2. Cost around $450 before tax, and I have a confirmed Jasper chip. Can't go wrong with all that if you ask me.
I bring this all up because I highly advise getting a Jasper console so ... yeah.

I got a new Arcade (Jasper, with 256 MB internal memory) from Dell on January 1st and got the $30 refurb drive from Microsoft a few days ago.
The website seems to have some issues authenticating serial numbers; I had to try a few times over several days before it finally let me proceed to the order form page.
Does anyone know if there's any way to transfer data from one Hard Drive to another? I'm considering upgrading to a 120GB HDD if that $100 rumour is true, but I'd like to be able to transfer my saves and DLC first.
I just went through this last week, here are the options:
1. Call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX and give them the serial number on your new unit, they will then mail you a hard drive transfer kit. Took me about 1 week to get it. Though I didn't use it, seems simple enough to use with a PC handy.
2. Buy a memory card. Move your profile (first) onto the memory card, then start moving over all of your saved data and DLC onto the memory card. Once it's full, turn off your Xbox, then switch out the hard drives. Turn it on, and move all the saved info and DLC back onto the new HDD. Make sure to keep your profile on the memory card. Rinse and repeat until your old HDD is empty, once it is, move your profile onto the new HDD.
Enjoy!

It is according to the microsoft website. Are there specific ports that the PS3 needs to get forwarded as well?
